Thanks for the link. The day when pedxing next steps foot on the trail, I am dropping everything I am doing to be there.

ditto for me too. An awesome testament of love and self-sacrifice. He did it because it was the thing to do.

There is no mention about him trying to drag the mattress to the bathroom like the Boston Globe story reported. Was that perhaps his son? I don't see how he could have done that if he ran back down immediately to have Ellen call 911 before running back up to save the boys.

It doesn't really matter - I'm just curious. I only hope I'd do the same thing in that situation.

You know, I get a kick out of thinking about when David will finally be able to read this thread. I'm sure he'll be very touched, but then there's those posts that just crack you up and make you feel good - like:

"He busted the door down, what a stallion!"

I'm really shocked right now.

Ped, we've chatted on line and I've always respected your input on this website. I'll look forward to the day when that starts again.

Positive thoughts your way, man.

If there's a lesson to be had in all this, besides that Dave's a good guy to have around in a pinch, it's this:

If you're about to run into a burning building wearing nothing but a bathrobe, at least wet yourself with the garden hose first!

Get better soon, Ped.

more good news...
This morning, I got another update from David's siter-

[The update is mostly good. In particular, David's lungs are doing quite
well, especially compared to last week. He's stayed on 40% oxygen, which
turns out to be the lowest % they provide in the respirators, and they've
lowered the pressure they're giving him in the respirators, because his
lungs are able to take in quite a bit of air - their capacity is something
like 80% normal right now, which sounds as though it's quite good this soon
after significant smoke inhalation. They say his lungs also basically sound
clear, and aren't producing much of the secretions that they have to
suction out regularly. We're definitely beginning to think all that
backpacking probably has helped his lungs' constitution to withstand this
and heal.]

yay, backpacking!!

[Other good news: his wounds and grafts seem to be healing well. In
particular, the graft on his right hand got a good report on Thursday.
Evidently they try to do the biggest one-piece grafts on the hands and the
face, as those are the parts that people care most about in terms of
aesthetics. So he had one big piece grafted on his hand last week.]

[Continuing worries, of course, too - including a fever that started night
before last (Thurs night), indicating some kind of infection. At 101.5 at
its highest yesterday, the nurses have said it's not very high - but we're
all still a bit anxious about it, as infection is the other big potentially
life-threatening concern besides lung trouble. But his fever has come down
a bit and doesn't seem to be going up again.]

[Everyone is holding up
fairly well, especially since the news has been relatively good lately.]

She also told me that Ellen has found a nice temporary apartment to stay in, while the house is being repaired. It is large enough for everyone, including David when he comes home. Ellen reports that she requested that the newspaper article not include an appeal for donations. The insurance is covering things nicely (I assume).

Still, I can't help but think of all the "extras" I have sitting around my house that could be used by a displaced family. I think between all of us TTers, David and family will at least be set for life with backpacking gear, eh?
:o)

Great news!

I do not know if this has been addressed but did David loose any gear?

Instead of money, what if we send REI gift certificates?

I bet his family could probably use the $ more. Not to be negative but there'll be plenty of time for REI gift cards later, they probably need regular clothes and towels and bed linenes and furniture, etc right now. And the medical bills might be a concern too.

Update on Pedxing
I got an update from Ellen. I thought I would share the news.

Overall, Pexing seems to be more on a healing trajectory than a failing one. He's had a fever for days and it is finally going down; there was no infection, maybe a virus. He also is acting as though he may be waking, so they are increasing his meds to keep him more sedated as it would not be a good time to wake him.

Ellen warns that his condition could go downhill without notice and she says it's too scary to become her true optimist self.

They move into their new temporary residence soon. Dealing with insurance and contractors looms on her horizon.

Please keep Pedxing and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
