highpointers?
I recently red "On the Top" about two guys who summited all fifty state high points. I researched on the web and it is growing hobby. I was wondering if there were any high pointers on this site. What places have everyone been too. Anyone do all fifty?

Great Idea
That sounds like a great idea. I think I will set a goal to start peak bag every high point in all 50 states after college.

It sounds like fun, just remember, the highest peak in Wisconsin is 'Tim's Peak'--I think about 1,700ft.

The highest peak in Iowa, I don't remember it's name, is the sky jump build for the Winter games, out of garbage.

Hmmm, wonder what the highest peak in Florida is?

www.americasroof.com is good site to go to for info. Some of the ones in the great plains are pretty rough climbs.

Um, I think Iowa's is in a farm yard somewhere, or by a silo. In NW Iowa.

I've done Harney Peak in South Dakota... as have a lot of others. lol

southern sixers

Please let me know if you want company on any of those trips. I Can't find anyone that would like to go with me. Some of the peaks you have to bushwack to get to them, and I don't feel comforable doing it by myself.

the southern 6ers
i am up for a hike on any of the southern 6ers and I too am looking for a co-hiker. I am trying to find someone to hike Mt. LeConte in the Tenn Smokies next weekend. I'm prolly taking the Bulls Head trail to the top. Its the easiest one, least amount of ice from what I have read.

One of my all time favorate trails is the Black mountain crest trail. I still need to do Winterstar, Gibbs Mountain and Celo Mountain.

Only weekend that is really booked so far is the sipsey trip weekend. everything else is somehow doable. my husband has one weekend where he got some sort of overnight duty. I can talk to the neighbors though. let me know so I can check into it.

I did Mt. Whitney.
Thought about doing all 50, but that includes places like McKinley, and that's more work (and training) than I want to put into it.

What is Harney Peak Like? Is it a hard climb? Does it get above the Treeline? Is it a nice peak. I've been curious about that mountain.

I have been to the highest "Peak" in Florida. It is near the town of Florala on the Florida/Alabama state line. Just south of Florala is a pull off to the highest peak just over 300 ft.! Not much to brag about, but I guess that is a lot for Florida.

the high point in Rhode Island is on private property and apparently the owner shoots at highpointers trying to bag it. Some people say its the most dangerous highpoint in the lower forty eight. Nowadays, the owner's son has worked out a deal with highpointers allowing them to summit on certain holidays over the year. None the less it is a boring peak of around 800 feet.

I've done Harney Peak in South Dakota also and the views on a clear day are the bomb and the views are great when you can see a thunderstorm in the makeing also.

A friend of mine has done this for a while. I've only done a few:

VA - Mt Rogers
WVA - Spruce Knob
NC - Mt Mitchell
TN - Clingmans Dome
OK - Black Mesa
TX - Guadalupe Peak

Costa Rica - Cerro Chiripo

I'm kind of embarassed that I didn't get KY when I lived in Lex.

what is Spruce Mountain like? I heard it has a real aline feel on the summit. Are there any good steep climbs to the summit?

I thought about bagging Brasstown Bald (highpoint in GA) this past weekend but it was a tad too far away from where I was going.

Spruce Knob is nice but you can drive to the top if you want. I parked a car there and then took another to a trailhead on the west side of the Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek Backcountry and hiked to the summit. It's a good walk. Very nice along the ridge-top of Spruce Mountain. Alot of, well, spruce trees, but open balds, too.

Opie tells me that the highest point in Florida isn't the spot everyone has been told it is. It's actually on his families property nearby.

I'll let Opie back that up himself.

people are trying to stack rocks on Mt. LeConte to make it higher than Clingmans Dome. It looks like they have about 40 feet to go.

How about finding the exact mean point in each state, and go there? That'd be cool.

Southern Sixers
We'll knock out a few of these in July.

It'd be cool to plan some fall trips to grab a few more.

I know Gemini and mudswimmer are interested.

I'm gonna order that book and see how we can fit several into a weekend, a lot are in the Smokies or close by.
