If you want good AT info read the forums over on whiteblaze.net - after you read all the forums (should take about a week of constnat reading) then feel free to ask questions there also.

Anyone else have grave concerns about a thru hiker who pays attention to details such as simple spelling with such reckless abandon?

Good luck man, wish it was me.

Photoguy190 - be true to your name take pictures, and put them into an album so we can view with the trip report when you return. Others must live viariously through your AT hike.

books
for starters, i would recommend both books by dan "wingfoot" bruce. one is "the thru-hikers handbook" and the other is a planning workbook. for strictly numbers and cold hard facts, get the latest edition of the AT data book. it gives mileage between all shelters, road access, towns, and other major stops, and tells how far to services and water. for entertainment and how NOT to do the AT, read a "a walk in the woods" by bill bryson. for pure masturbatory pleasure, buy all the maps, throw them on your bed, and roll around in them. and dont worry, theyre water-proof.

Mark your calendar
For anyone near the Wisconsin Northwoods who is interested in the AT, our college will host a slide presentation by our town's recent thru-hiker and world adventure traveler. Mark, who went by the trail name The Biker Sly on his 2002 AT hike, will give his talk on Tuesday, March 9, 7:30 p.m., in the LRC Theater at Nicolet Area Technical College, Rhinelander, WI. (It's free, too!)

Mark is a great presenter as well as a remarkable long-distance runner/skier/bicyclist/hiker.

TO NashvilleHiker
You get the money and the time by making the hike the number one priority in your life. Save every penny, arrange your life so there is room for the hike. People of all ages and walks of life do the AT. When I did my first hike, I was a minimum wage retail worker; on my second I was a secretary. It doesn't take big bucks to hike, just the willingness to make it a priority. I quit my jobs (3 times so far), put my stuff in storage and took off. If you have a real career (and not just a job) it is harder, but I have known doctors, lawyers and engineers who managed to take off, because that was what they wanted to do more than anything else. If you have kids, it becomes difficult -- but I have known people who hiked with their kids -- it is feasible. If you have a house, you have to figure out what to do with it - rent it, sell it, save enough to pay the mortgage and a caretaker, or find someone to live in it while you're gone - but there are ways.

Money and Time
I have been wanting to hike the whole trail for a long time. Well I have just ended a job that I had slaved at for 14 years. So I now have the time. As for the money going to spend my retirement now. Who knows If if I would have lived long enough to get around to spennding!!!! So I might as well do it now and if I do live long enough I can remenber when :)
