“I bought an HP photosmart 435 3.1 MP on sale at Circuit City about a month ago. It was a step up for me, but I'd hardly recommend it for somebody willing to spend the bucks for a better camera. Mine has a 5X digital zoom, but an optical zoom would be far better.”

It is a great camera. High resolutions. Takes any F mount Nikon lenses. The camera will function completly manual or auto.

The D1 has been ripped by professonal photographers for its stability. I have heard of the problems that they have had and have not experienced any of them. I must have gotten lucky with my purchase. The D1X and H have a better reputation for stablilty. I do not know about the D2.”

“Nice camera Big Poppa. And a pretty price tag. I use the Fuji S1-Pro at work but had to settle for a Cannon Powershot A70 at home for now. I would love to be able to afford the Nikon or Fuji pro series.”

“Kodak CX4230 2MP 3x optical zoom and a 64M SD card.

basically a point and shoot with about 100 photo capacity.

Chosen for size and placement of controls, and using standard AA batteries.

Lots of trade offs, size, cost, but easy to use and cheap to run.”

“I own 3 digitals:

Nikon Coolpix 995

Pros:
compact and light (compared to SLR)
3 megapixels produces excellent 5x7 prints and very good 8x10's.
Exposure modes similiar to SLR (aperture and shutter priority, manual) are nice features and easy to use.

Cons:
auto focus slower than SLR.
short delay after dperessing shutter can be annoying.
rechargeable battery suffers in cold (buy spares!)
3x optical zoom ok but 5x or more would provide more range.
To properly frame a photo, viewing through the lcd monitor is necessary. The image viewed through the viewfinder is not the same size as actual image.
Does not have a true manual focus. Electronic manual focus very cumbersome.

Nikon Coolpix 5700
while heavier than the 995, I still consider it light and compact compared to a SLR.
5 megapixels and 8x optical zoom rock!
like the 995, it has the exposure modes similiar to a SLR.
produces higher quality images than the 995, and with an adapter filters can be used.

Cons:
similiar to the 995, auto focus slower than SLR.
short delay after dperessing shutter can be annoying.
rechargeable battery suffers in cold (buy spares!)

Nikon D1H

Pros:

digital SLR is awesome and I can use all my 35mm Nikon lenses.
A very solid piece of equipment. I dropped it on a rock from chest level and I think there was more damage to the rock.
Super fast autofocus, no delay whatsoever when hitting shutter release.
Images are fantastic.
Only 2.74 megapixels but I've printed beautiful 8x10's.
Controls are much easier to use than 995 and 5700.

Cons:
Heavy and pricey.
like the 995 and 5700, the rechargeable battery suffers in the cold.
Prone to dust spots on the images. Dust gets into the sensor very easy when changing lenses. Cleaning is difficult and expensive, and using Photoshop to clean up the spots is annoying.”

Good cheap camera for ultralight backpacking. Pictures plenty good for web use.”

“Olympus C-3000. 3.3 mpxl, 3x optical zoom, easy to use with some advanced features if you're so inclined. I saw someone at Mt Rainier yesterday who had a better model with 8x optical zoom, I think it was a C-7500 or something. Mine was about $500, but it was a present so I'm not sure.”

The only thing I don't like about it is the shutter lag. It's annoying enough (especially taking wildlife or candid shots) that I've considered selling it and getting the new C-5060.”

Good:

It worked well in sub-zero temps, takes great pictures, is fully loaded with manual and automatic settings, has 3X optical and 3X digital zoom, good battery life, and uses regular aa's.

Bad:
Weighs in at over 1 pound, viewfinder is not completely accurate to picture, and autofocus can be a pain (though you can turn that feature off).”

“Y2 - I have my processing done at Ritz Camera. I haven't had slide film put on cds yet but they tell me they can do it.”

I'd say perhaps I don't have something set right, but I've seen it happen on other Nikons, too. Just wondering. And I had to download a shot that someone else took on some Canon. WOW! I have an Olympus 4000 zoom. It's 4 Megapixel. My profile lists my webshots account. Go to the "Sipsey Waterfalls" album for some high resolution pics.”

“RE: Delay. I think I have found a way around it by half pushing the shutter button, frame shot and pushing the rest of the way. I think it cuts the delay in half. Action shots are a little tricky.

“Fuji Finepix 2650. First Digital camera. Cheap, easy to use and reasonably good pics. It takes AA's. I upgraded with a card reader, rechargeable batteries and a 128 MB card.”

See I love the look of the new Minolta D5, and I think the integrated anti-shake could be a real bonus for taking it backpacking, but I'm not too sure about buying into Minolta when they've been so crap at getting out digital cams.

If I buy into a system then I have a feeling I'm better going with Canon or Nikon, which give me better options for getting new bodies further down the line.”
