Consider it a digital camera "buyer's guide"” 9:23:25 AM 1/12/04 “Just bought a Canon A80 - great bit of kit. Thing that sold me was the ability to do some more advanced things than point and shoot, like manual setting, aperture priority and shutter priority, filters and convertion lenses. I found this place useful” 9:27:25 AM 1/12/04 “Nikon Coolpix 5700” 9:31:25 AM 1/12/04 “I bought an HP photosmart 435 3.1 MP on sale at Circuit City about a month ago. It was a step up for me, but I'd hardly recommend it for somebody willing to spend the bucks for a better camera. Mine has a 5X digital zoom, but an optical zoom would be far better.” 9:31:58 AM 1/12/04 “conversion - oops” 9:32:36 AM 1/12/04 “Nikon D1. It is a great camera. High resolutions. Takes any F mount Nikon lenses. The camera will function completly manual or auto. The D1 has been ripped by professonal photographers for its stability. I have heard of the problems that they have had and have not experienced any of them. I must have gotten lucky with my purchase. The D1X and H have a better reputation for stablilty. I do not know about the D2.” 9:36:35 AM 1/12/04 “Nice camera Big Poppa. And a pretty price tag. I use the Fuji S1-Pro at work but had to settle for a Cannon Powershot A70 at home for now. I would love to be able to afford the Nikon or Fuji pro series.” 10:23:08 AM 1/12/04 “Canon G5. Still messing with it so I still learning the ins and outs of it. So far it rocks.” 10:25:34 AM 1/12/04 Olympus stylus 4.0 “Nice, very compact, weatherproof camera for hiking.” 10:27:23 AM 1/12/04 “Good camera, pretty easy to use. Not the fanciest I ever saw, but for the price, very good and functuional... bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=01N5R_SFjFV5R7SHGzlzTLuJlbwh4o021tU=?ProductSKU=DSCP72KITIS&Dept=dcc&CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_Cyber-shotDigitalCameras>Camera” 10:30:12 AM 1/12/04 Sorry, try this link 10:31:47 AM 1/12/04 “Kodak CX4230 2MP 3x optical zoom and a 64M SD card. basically a point and shoot with about 100 photo capacity. Chosen for size and placement of controls, and using standard AA batteries. Lots of trade offs, size, cost, but easy to use and cheap to run.” 10:32:57 AM 1/12/04 “Olympus Camedia 700..bought it a couple of years ago as it was only camera available with 10X Optical under $500..I love it still..does everything..it\'s light..it\'s hit the ground from 5 feet, rock actually, and nothing broke..I wanted a high power camera as I like wildlife..now, for a shameless plug: http://community.webshots.com/user/mataharihiker” 12:33:09 PM 1/12/04 “Mine came inside the below digital camcorder. http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=kfB4mXDE_zV4mTDGeepykj_Jlfhtss05ja8=?ProductSKU=DCRTRV950KITB&Dept=dcc&CategoryName=dcc_DICamcorders_MiniDVHandycamCamcorders” 12:44:30 PM 1/12/04 “I own 3 digitals: Nikon Coolpix 995 Pros: compact and light (compared to SLR) 3 megapixels produces excellent 5x7 prints and very good 8x10's. Exposure modes similiar to SLR (aperture and shutter priority, manual) are nice features and easy to use. Cons: auto focus slower than SLR. short delay after dperessing shutter can be annoying. rechargeable battery suffers in cold (buy spares!) 3x optical zoom ok but 5x or more would provide more range. To properly frame a photo, viewing through the lcd monitor is necessary. The image viewed through the viewfinder is not the same size as actual image. Does not have a true manual focus. Electronic manual focus very cumbersome. Nikon Coolpix 5700 while heavier than the 995, I still consider it light and compact compared to a SLR. 5 megapixels and 8x optical zoom rock! like the 995, it has the exposure modes similiar to a SLR. produces higher quality images than the 995, and with an adapter filters can be used. Cons: similiar to the 995, auto focus slower than SLR. short delay after dperessing shutter can be annoying. rechargeable battery suffers in cold (buy spares!) Does not have a true manual focus. Electronic manual focus very cumbersome. Nikon D1H Pros: digital SLR is awesome and I can use all my 35mm Nikon lenses. A very solid piece of equipment. I dropped it on a rock from chest level and I think there was more damage to the rock. Super fast autofocus, no delay whatsoever when hitting shutter release. Images are fantastic. Only 2.74 megapixels but I've printed beautiful 8x10's. Controls are much easier to use than 995 and 5700. Cons: Heavy and pricey. like the 995 and 5700, the rechargeable battery suffers in the cold. Prone to dust spots on the images. Dust gets into the sensor very easy when changing lenses. Cleaning is difficult and expensive, and using Photoshop to clean up the spots is annoying.” 1:33:42 PM 1/12/04 “Somehow, I KNEW that last one would be Pennsy! so, got any cameras you'd like to donate to charity?? MY charity?? LOL” 1:37:44 PM 1/12/04 1:38:54 PM 1/12/04 “i have th coolpix 5700 and an old kodak 1 MP..the coolpix is a tad more complicated” 1:42:27 PM 1/12/04 “I will be using disposible cameras this weekend.” 1:51:25 PM 1/12/04 “Gee Liz, I was thinking about bringing a spare to Ocala for you, but you posted on the "Broke Camera" thread that I don't owe you anything anymore. Sorry.” 1:52:36 PM 1/12/04 “*cough, cough*” 2:05:00 PM 1/12/04 “I have a Kodak DX4900 digital camera. It doesn't have a lot of features but it suits me and takes good pictures.” 2:13:58 PM 1/12/04 “Olympus C-3000. 3.3 mpxl, 3x optical zoom, easy to use with some advanced features if you're so inclined. I saw someone at Mt Rainier yesterday who had a better model with 8x optical zoom, I think it was a C-7500 or something. Mine was about $500, but it was a present so I'm not sure.” 2:24:08 PM 1/12/04 Nunya Binness, Lizzy.... “Actually, we have an Olypus D-550 zoom and like it. However, we ain't photographers, as such, and wouldn't know a good pic from a bad pic. BTW, whatever happened to the "Pass-around camera thread"? It's the only place that proves my existence.” 2:27:34 PM 1/12/04 “GIVE ME FILM, OR GIVE ME DEATH!” 2:28:55 PM 1/12/04 “LOL Buck. Actually, I've been using my 35mm some lately, but I refuse to go back to film and slide scanning. I have the negatives developed and images put on cds instead.” 2:33:27 PM 1/12/04 “Pennsy - is there a slide developer that'll do that for a reasonable amount?” 2:54:38 PM 1/12/04 “Or is that just for film?” 2:58:07 PM 1/12/04 “I like my Olympus C-5050 (5 mp , 3x zoom). It takes crystal clear photos, has a low-light illuminator, magnesium body... The only thing I don't like about it is the shutter lag. It's annoying enough (especially taking wildlife or candid shots) that I've considered selling it and getting the new C-5060.” 3:32:02 PM 1/12/04 “Canon powershot a40. Good: It worked well in sub-zero temps, takes great pictures, is fully loaded with manual and automatic settings, has 3X optical and 3X digital zoom, good battery life, and uses regular aa's. Bad: Weighs in at over 1 pound, viewfinder is not completely accurate to picture, and autofocus can be a pain (though you can turn that feature off).” 3:35:37 PM 1/12/04 “Y2 - I have my processing done at Ritz Camera. I haven't had slide film put on cds yet but they tell me they can do it.” 6:33:18 PM 1/12/04 “Nikon D100 Nikon N80 Nikon 885 The D100 is a 6.something digital SLR. When it powers up, you feel you're thrown back by a sonic concussion it pushes toward you. Never mind the photo quality or tactical feel you get from it. The D100 is a punctuated statement about engineering perfection. An exquisite blend between electronic and mechanical design. A marvel. How's that?” 12:28:25 AM 1/13/04 “Olympus C-5050 5 Megapixel I'm happy with it :) ”12:35:13 AM 1/13/04 “Any of you with Nikons have problems with the reds? In my shots, skin tones go reddish and I always have to color correct. I'd say perhaps I don't have something set right, but I've seen it happen on other Nikons, too. Just wondering. And I had to download a shot that someone else took on some Canon. WOW! Good flesh tones I didn't have to mess with!” 1:04:56 AM 1/13/04 Coolpix 5700 with flash, untouched “ ”7:07:55 AM 1/13/04 “Dunadan, I have a pic of you on my webshots album. It proves your existance and proves that you've been to Mirkwood. I have an Olympus 4000 zoom. It's 4 Megapixel. My profile lists my webshots account. Go to the "Sipsey Waterfalls" album for some high resolution pics.” 7:12:09 AM 1/13/04 “RE: Delay. I think I have found a way around it by half pushing the shutter button, frame shot and pushing the rest of the way. I think it cuts the delay in half. Action shots are a little tricky. ”7:14:03 AM 1/13/04 “Fuji Finepix 2650. First Digital camera. Cheap, easy to use and reasonably good pics. It takes AA's. I upgraded with a card reader, rechargeable batteries and a 128 MB card.” 7:22:09 AM 1/13/04 “Ok - I need some ratings on people and their Digital SLRs. Looking at the Canon Rebel XT Canon D20 new Canon D5 (ok, it's 3.5K, but is a 12.4 MP full-frame sensor) Minolta D5 Pentax istDS. Whatcha all think, especially the Rebel TX as I've heard mixed reviews on this one.” 3:17:11 PM 8/22/05 “2.1MP HP Camera. It's crap but if I lost it or it was destroyed I wouldn't weep. I don't spend a lot of time worrying about my camera when I hike. My pictures are often bad. You can see for yourself on my photo albums. I got it for 70 bucks.” 3:19:44 PM 8/22/05 “I'm using the Canon 300D (Digital Rebel) and I'm real happy with it. I just ordered the 17-40mm f/4L lens from B&H on Friday. Anybody want a 17-55mm EF-S lens? :-) ”3:56:23 PM 8/22/05 “Thanks Mike, it takes some great shots. See I love the look of the new Minolta D5, and I think the integrated anti-shake could be a real bonus for taking it backpacking, but I'm not too sure about buying into Minolta when they've been so crap at getting out digital cams. If I buy into a system then I have a feeling I'm better going with Canon or Nikon, which give me better options for getting new bodies further down the line.” 3:58:47 PM 8/22/05 “I have the Rebel 300D also but my pics look nothing like Hikin Mike or Wind Walkers :( I used it this weekend for the first ime on a hike. Got to get use to all those focal points” 4:05:10 PM 8/22/05 “can you switch the rebels down to a single focal point?” 4:07:10 PM 8/22/05 “I have the Canon 20D when I shoot digi. But if I were serious about photography and buying a new one, get that new Canon 5D. Full-frame is good.” 4:08:34 PM 8/22/05 “i just got an olympus C7000, it's a 7.1 with a 5X zoom. i bought it off of ebay for 270.00. it's a factory reconditiond but is perfect! now all i need is to learn how to download to web shots.” 4:08:46 PM 8/22/05 “Canon G5, Y2! Excellent camera...” 4:08:58 PM 8/22/05 “Buck - Canon D5 looks damn sexy, but I think it would be overkill for my skill level.” 4:11:30 PM 8/22/05 “Y2, yes you can. My biggest problem was forgetting to switch it to the one I wanted.” 4:13:00 PM 8/22/05 “What I hate is forgetting to take it out of "Timer". Especially bad when you see wldlife and you have to wait until it times out. So Buck, your not serious about photography then? :-)” 5:33:45 PM 8/22/05
