What is there to salvage off the hard disks? Didn't you say you formatted them already? Boot to a floppy or CD, go to DOS, format them again and try XP once again. If that doesn't work...upgrade.

My own problem
Now I'm having my own little computer problem...Windows XP has some type of little preview program that lets you browse pictures fast using the left and right keys...but I just upgraded to SP2 last night and now it's gone! Anyone know the name of the program or where it's located in the directory structure?

Open your folder and click the "view" menu.
Select "customize this folder..."
Under "What kind of folder is this?" select "Photo Album"
This should allow you to select "Filmstrip" as one of your view types.

I'm basically done for the year. I might do deer camp in early November one weekend, but other than that I'm done. Time to get my hunting gear ready. Deer season starts in two weeks.

Things are settling down at work so I have a little more time to post. For awhile I could only get on for like 5 minutes a day...kinda cut into my backpacking as well...but now I'm back on track. You see my new tent?
Dub

I guess you went for a winter tent since you've got the hammock?
Silent J
11:41:45 PM
10/11/04

Actually this tent will now be my favorite three season tent when hammocking is not an option (colder weather like at TC4) or when I take someone else since it sleeps two comfortably. In winter I'll stick to the REI Half Dome I have since it's sturdy and can stand up against snow...the ML doesn't have much support against snow.

Hey, when does the hike start for the cook off? I said I wouldn't do it but it might be timed just right depending on how quickly I get there.

do you guys know of anyone that works only weekends? like friday, saturday, sunday only?
helinka

You can hike in anytime you want, the cookoff started at 5pm last year and you had an hour to cook...I'm assuming this year will be the same. Gonna send the family up on the bus and then hike in yourself?

There is also a jeep trail that takes you pretty close to the site...towndawg knows more about it if you're interested in it...but you definately need a 4x4.

J, the tent is posted in this thread...change your date range to two days and it should show.

H, I used to know people who worked only weekends and went to school during the week. But that sucks a lot.

Well, for my friend it wasn't...he couldn't hang out with anyone at all since he had to get in 30 hours in three days and then studied and went to class the other 4 days. I'm sure though if you weren't going to school and had kids that weren't in school it might be nice.
Dub

my kids are in school, so i'd be there all week for them.
the hours are still night shift...4-5am + shift premium etc.
if i changed, i have to commit to two years
helinka

wow...that's a big commitment...and that could cut into your backpacking time, especially TT group trips. I wouldn't do it but that's me.

Dub, who's the chick?

I figured they'd have a general time for the contestants to start. I didn't see anything on the site but if the cook-off starts around 5 I think I could do the hike with just water on my back. Either that or I'll be really late for the cook-off. I'll see if Lizs has a timeline for the event.

J, she's my girlfriend. I'm sure that the contest will have a start/stop time and I think you have to carry your food and stuff in...I'd ask Smokeygirl about it. I'm looking forward to seeing you and your family again. Talk to you guys later.

Yes, my dream doesn't have me in school. I'm actually putting together some plans for a booth at Trader's World right now. If I can turn a profit I'm quitting my job so I can hike during the week. At this point I'm not holding my breath but it's worth a shot.

SJ you could still upgrade during the week. one or two courses a year shouldn't take up too much trail time

Dub, the cook-off is from 4 - 6.

Helinka, I'm done with school. I enjoyed working better when I was getting jobs based on a H.S. Diploma rather than a degree. I wasn't cut out for this desk jockey stuff.

It's a flea market. One of the more modern deals that's more like a mall though. I'd be retailing new products. Basically as long as I make enough to pay rent I figure it's a good deal.

Well this is a bunch of crap... lol

I never knew that so many non-backpackers would get such a kick out of alcohol stoves...

So I'm sitting in my apartment working on the single can design so I can give a demonstration in my wilderness expedition leadership class on how to build an alcohol stove, I chose this design because it's the easiest to teach, and we will be on the trail when I give the demonstration this weekend. Anyways, my neighbor and her boyfriend stop by for a visit and ask me about my "ash tray" on the table. I tell them all about it and show them how to make it, using them as an audience for a dry run on my demonstration, now neither of them backpack - and they think this thing is the coolest thing in the world, she builds one immediately with one of my pop cans and my tools. He spends the rest of the night practicing, then apparently he shows it off to his roomates - none of which backpack, and they all think it's so cool that they'll buy one from him for $10, a day later he has sold 31 stoves to a bunch of crazy college kids... what a crock.
