LZ, if it's a virus and it hasn't hijacked the master boot sector on the hard drive, then safe mode should keep it from starting up so that you can run your virus scanner, etc. (often viruses are written to inhibit those programs from running while the viruses are running -- logically). If it's got your boot sector, you might be able to salvage your computer by booting with a cd and running its removal program -- which you could probably download from Symantec or McAffee after you find out what virus it is. Spyware just slows your computer down, but I haven't seen any that actually wrecks things.
