DEET has some nasty chemicals that can cause some sort of damage to your nervous system if you absorb too much. Most commercially available versions are low enough in concentration taht it's pretty safe but most advise to limit direct contact with skin. The stronger the concentration the better it works, but the more "risky" it is long term.
