Less surface area and they are thinner...not as much rubber to wear out. On a huge 4x4 you have wider and longer tires, greater surface area = more tread life. I get about 30-40K per set of tires. How I really feel? I feel that backpacker.com is an inferior backpacking community overrun with trolls and more concerned with warm-fuzzy posts encouraging only online community instead of actual backpacking--thus the acceptance of the trolls. On the dark side we know who the trolls are because we know each other--there is about 1-2 degrees of seperation between all the backpackers there--so the trolls are easy to spot and ignore. As a group we get out more, get together more, have more miles on our boots, and have more fun. We help each other in real life (not just online), we let others borrow or use our gear and homes, we give away our old gear to each other for free. All positive things that this place has no chance of matching, ever. Here I know of at least four trolls perpetrated by people on the dark side. These trolls are accepted and liked by most of the community members here. They are part of a continual joke from the other side about how useless this place is. I feel somewhat connected or attached to this place as it was the first backpacking forum I used. I would like to see it changed for the better. I give props to the PNW and MI groups as they are achieving community that most here will never experience unless they come to the other side. I have met in person 17 people who like me started here, couldn't find anyone to backpack with, got sick of the trolls and fuzziness, moved to TT to and discovered a real backpacking community which isn't limited to being online only. You should check out the backpacker.com sucks threads to read of many more people who switched sites, started backpacking more and having more fun. So then why do I still post here? Because I hate it so much. I hate the annoying trolls. I hate it that there is little offline community. I hate it that I encountered Oskar here. I hate all the warm fuzzy posts. I hate it that you can't find any good information because people are too lazy (or dumb) to search. I hate it because it just downright sucks. So that's how I really feel and I could care less what anyone thinks of it. I'm still going to post here and I'm going to be honest. And if some people think that I'm mean or not compassionate--well, it could be worse, I could be like bacpac (who isn't liked much on the other side but you want to know something? He backpacks and remember that community thing I was talking about where people give their gear away for free--yeah, he's sent a few people some old gear, even mean ol bacpac--surprising?). So there it is, the honest truth straight from the heart not meant to be mean. So all you lurkers go ahead and start making your snide remarks (which were conveniently withheld until now). Go ahead and post the same thing you always post when someone says something bad about this place. I'm listening but I'm not buying your rhetorical warm-fuzzy-happy BS.
