yeah I want some of those down booties too!

and I've decided tonight that I'm gonna need a new pack soon. the inner frame supports have been bent and reshaped too many times (hey it's a good excuse isn't it)

What kind of pack do you have? And what kind of pack are you looking for?
Dub

4/29/04

I've got an external frame, Kelty Tioga. It's been a good pack and I like it. It's a little on the heavy side.

I wanna get something thats under 5 pounds, if possible. Internal frame, water bottle pockets on the hips. At least 4500 cu in.

I'll prolly stop in Atlanta or somewhere on the way up to Dolly Sods and try on a bunch and decide what I like then. I'm not in a big hurry, just before winter.

I don't want one of those super lightweight jobs made out of silnylon though. I need a good support system, I'll carry a little extra weight for comfort in that area.

Take a look at the Gregory Forester, it's 4700ci and 4lbs I think. I have the Gregory Shasta, 5,000ci, 6.5lbs, and if you want a monster that will haul all and a badass suspension...well, you can't go wrong with a Gregory.
Dub

4/29/04

yeah, i figgered to look at the Gregory stuff, it's got a good reputation.

I assume you have a review that I could read?

No matter what happens to me now, I can always say I was a part of the "The Night Crawlers: Scorch, Dub, Roam" thread. No one can ever take that away from me. No one. Ever. Okay, maybe matt can, or a nasty virus that destroys this server, but other than that, I've partaken in this thread. Thanks everyone, this means a lot to me, really, it does. Thank you SO much. Thanks again, I mean it. YO, thanks! Really. This is too cool. I am so blessed. This is wonderful. Thank you. Thank you for total realz. I'd like to thank you more, but I'm gonna go call my mom right now and tell her about this. Thanks again, if it weren't for you, and you know who you are, this would have never happened to me. Take care, and thanks again. Thank you.

The Shasta Man! Honestly of the 5 packs I've owned, it has the best suspension I have ever used. It does a great job of putting all the weight on your hips without any pressure points. Your back won't get hot and your shoulders won't hurt.

Buck you are one crazy dude! We gotta hike sometime.
Dub

4/29/04

you've owned 5 packs!

geez you are a gear slut! lol

I've only owned two and that includes the one I used back in Boy Scouts, uh, in the early 80's. before real suspension systems were invented!

Glad you stopped by, come back sometime. we'll rap ya know? Tell your mom hi from all of us, invite her over with you next time. But really dude, it's no biggy. Come on back anytime.

Yeah, 5! I first started in the scouts with an external frame Kelty, then a Kelty Coyote 4500 which I sold to my roommate, then a Dana Design Glacier which I returned after using it a year because it was the wrong size, then the Gregory Shasta, then the Osprey Aether 60. I also have a Salomon Raid Race Pack for dayhiking.

I need to get a decent daypack, I do a lot of dayhikes with the kids and the bookbag thing just don't cut it.
Roam Around
12:36:55 AM
4/29/04

The racepack has like 2200ci and weighs 2lbs, has a hipbelt that isn't worth crap...but there are lots of pockets and organizational features and it has a hydration sleeve...it's not bad for $50.
Dub

I nailed 9966--a cool lookin' number. 30 more! What are we gonna do for 10k? I bet some jerkoff is lurking right now, waiting to steal it!
Dub
12:39:25 AM
4/29/04

that's what I've noticed is that none of the daypacks I've looked (web shopping only) seem to have a decent hipbelt.

I swear a buddy of mine used to have a Kelty daypack with a padded hipbelt, but I can't seem to find one now.
Roam Around
12:39:49 AM
4/29/04

Of course you really don't need a hefty hipbelt...but if you're carrying everything for the kids your poundage might get up to 20lbs and then the pack would sag. I've learned that I don't like my trekking poles when I use my daypack...I usually just leave them attached to the sides but I think I'm gonna start leaving them in the car.

yeah- gawd, thats an OLD trip! I have another album - trailtrekker2004- but I can't seem to find enough time to get the last five trips or so on there. Too freakin' busy on TT!! hahahhaa. I love the Pine Creek/Italy Pass shots (aug 2003) and the Kearsarge Pass (july 02??) shots. The Sierra are really great mountains. Originally from NY, these mts are SOOOOOOO different

I stink we're gonna be able to get into the backcountry very early this season. I have mixed feelings about it. It'll be nice to get in there early, but it's always nice to have a good snow year too. I'll be taking advantage of the early snowmelt, that's for sure. But I'm an opportunist. I feel sorta bad.
Buck

yeah, I've just seen pics, but I'd really love to get out there for a couple of weeks and just tour around different parts.

I spend most of my time in the NC smokeys, way diff from the Sierras.

I bet, I've come across bones and such, a deer skull once in VA, on Mt Rogers, but never a spine and such.

that would be a little freaky, wonder how old it was and what killed it, wow, ya know?

I've got 14 tents (okay, 14 shelters, which includes a couple bivys and a tarp, the rest are tents), 9 sleeping bags, 12 backpacks, 2 dogs and a partridge in a pear tree. But admittedly I have no goals other than to explore wild areas, eat, and poop. I'm a freak of nature.
