if your mouth burns, it means you did it right!

I made "chicken chili" the other night. Was good, different.

wow, that was a lot of work... I used to do my laundry every 2 weeks and then it fit in my pack just fine, then I went to every 3 weeks, and now 4 weeks... and I had trouble getting it all in my pack, phew... well, i'm off to do my laundry.

New Hooters trip report is out. Slowly my plan of visiting every Hooters location is unfolding.

BTW Roam, I hope you're not against visiting nearby Hooters on our backpacking treks in June.

I'll never turn my nose up at a chance to visit a new Hooters location!
Roam Around

Yes! We will go to any that are nearby and we'll definately visit one of the two Columbus locations. It is my dream to open a Hooters on campus where I'd have a good supply of waitresses and customers.
Dub

ahh, i'm glad my pack isn't that heavy normally, i'd die.

the only hooters i've ever been to is the one at the top of the mall of america...
simer190

so now you know not to ever try and pack 4 weeks worth of clothes - this should help you plan for your big trip.
Roam Around

Your plan sounds fun Simer, but I think I'd make an "intended route" and try to follow it that way you can send stuff you need to TTers houses and we could ship it along to the next person, etc. It wouldn't hamper your plans too much as you could still explore and do side trips and possibly even reroute your trip. But say if you came through Ohio and knew you were coming through Ohio, you could send a box ahead to one of us Ohio TTers with supplies you might need. Kinda the same way they do drops on the AT but a lil more complicated. Would probably help with the cost of the trip.
Dub
5:12:38 PM
4/10/04

yeah? I kinda get what you're saying... what kind of supplies would i keep in such a box?
simer190
6:06:19 PM
4/10/04

ahhh thought i would pop in and say that the grilled food was excellent and now that its becoming a little bit dark outside i think i will go out and fire it up again...man oh man i could grill all day...thinking of the T-bones right now, and maybe a few bacon wrapped fillets....
shep0987
6:10:57 PM
4/10/04

Well, a "bounce box" would contain things you don't need to carry from location to location like deoderant, a hairbrush, extra clothes, town clothes, laundry detergant, maps, guide books, cell phone charger(if you have one), calling cards, stamps, envelopes, paper, extra ziplocks, seam sealer, gear repair kit, extra first aid items, checkbook, the list goes on. Basically anything you might need occasionaly or want when you're in a town. This way you don't have to buy and throw away this stuff everytime you go to town and you don't have to carry it.
Dub
6:17:43 PM
4/10/04

yeah, that makes sense... i never thought of anything like that. There's gonna be times when there are no TT'ers along the way... but i guess that's where these sites i've been looking at come in. It would take quite a bit of planning ahead, but as long as I have a general destination every week or two, it might work out fairly well.
simer190
6:25:21 PM
4/10/04

You can also send your bounce box to post offices...just label it "hold for hiker, eta 4/20/04" Just call the post office ahead of time and let them know you are doing it. As long as you had a general route you'd be okay. You could also keep in contact with some TTers who would probably help you with drop shipments. Meaning you buy and package food ahead of time and send them to TTers or have a family member ship them to certain post offices and destinations for you. This way you don't have to buy food in town all the time.

My Post on BP.com
So there is some newbie #&%!$ over there that made this post against a backpacker who uses the screenname booger. Booger post good information, trip reports, and helps out and has been around longer than the acuser.

The acuser posted:

Absurdity Posted: Apr 9, 2004 6:24 PM Reply

... that someone would use the name "Booger" and have an obsessive love for passing gas.

Really, it is not only sickening and disgusting, but just plain absurd.

Hopefully one day this immature person will find something else to concentrate on.

My $0.02

Then I posted this as a followup:

tmbackpack,

Why don't you pull that trekking pole out of your a$$ and realize that you are the newb here and you have no rights. So STFU. You're not the moderator and it's not your job to make this place "reader friendly." Instead of making this place "reader friendly" I think we should first make it "idiot poster free" and stop ignorant people with 194 posts from creating stupid, useless threads like this one. If you're so offended why not simply email the moderator rather than making a post against a backpacker who will always be better than you.

Frankly I'm offended by the name "tmbackpacker" considerably more than "booger." Because the letters "tm" stand for "turd muncher" and a turd muncher that backpacks...now that's just sick. I think I'm going to email the moderator about it and make a thread asking that the offending name "tmbackpacker" be removed. In an effort to make this place more reader friendly the turd munching name should be changed.

Booger has been here longer than you and he has contributed useful backpacking information to many threads, many more than you. He has also entertained us with trip reports to Wal-Mart as well as legit backpacking destinations. Where are your trip reports with pictures?

So turd muncher backpacker, I find you absurd and as long as you're willing to show everyone on the forum that you're an a$$ by attacking a better backpacker with a jealousy-driven thread, I'll be here to make fun of you and post absurd comments to all of your useless, whiney, punk a$$ threads.

Cheers Biatch!

What is your intention? To just see the country? If so you could hitch rides, etc, and get around fast. Or do you plan to hike the entire thing.
Dub
7:00:50 PM
4/10/04

I plan to hike... my intention is to see the country, but I don't particularily want to hitch rides, which is not saying that I have anything against it, but the reason I am hiking is so that I don't see the country "fast" if i wanted that I would just drive... and I've already done that.
simer190
7:04:00 PM

why don't you hike one of the coast to coast trails? you'd see a lot of the country and it'd take ya a year or so.

This stuff is getting good. I wonder if it will get edited, deleted, or get me banned. I hope it doesn't get me banned. How else am I supposed to make fun of idiots and set obvious traps for lap dogs? See guys, a bp.com account is good for something!

Yep, good enough reason Simer. I was just offering it as a suggestion.
Dub

lol, well that was a good laugh

I do not like the idea of having a "trail" that i have to follow, i want the freedom to be able to go where i want
simer190
7:28:14 PM
4/10/04

Ever consider biking? You're gonna be walking on a lot of roads, especially if you head west...why not speed past the boring roads? You could take all your bp gear and stop at trails and explore...make a loop back to your bike or have a TTer that lives nearby move it for ya.

Of course if you're dead set on walking...it's your thing man, do what'cha want. Just offering suggestions.

thanks for the suggestions. it shows me that somebody cares, and actually takes the time to consider what I'm really doing, most people, especially around here are like you're doing what? why would you want to do soemthing liek that
simer190
7:33:05 PM

Bike trips rock. Personally the farthest I'd walk would be the triple crowns. If I wanted to see the US I'd ride a bike. You can get a light bike and a lil trailer and pull everything you need with you.
Dub

I think your idea is awesome simer, wish I'd had the gumption to think of it back when I had the time and freedom to pull it off. It might have made a difference in some of the decisions I've made in my life to have had that kind of introspective time.

Do it!

roam i dont think that it is that hard to think of to do but yet...how many people can afford to do it?? i probably could but i would give up my whole life to do it...ahh what life you might ask...well you know what i mean...ill just take my weekend/overnighters...dreaming of the day i have more money and time to do as mentioned above...and i would definitely not be against doing a bike trip...well i dont have a bike so that would make it kinda hard...one day though...one day....

question...

twice i've done solo trips, twice I came home earlier than expected. If I force myself to do the solo journey, I know i will get used to it and probably learn a lot about myself in the process.

I know i'll be able to, but it's hard.

So, would it be worth it to push to find someone to join me, so I don't have to be alone, or should i pursue the solo journey?

That would be tough to make. I'm doing the MS Walk in Chicago on Sunday the 2nd--hard to make the drive to Ely for an 8am test the next day.

What's the subject of the test, maybe I could give you some hints. If it is an Intro. Course those can be the worse--I have tales about my first one. But USUALLY the basics are good.
