How difficult is it to get around Gainsville without a car? Also, do you have any idea what the job market is like there?

Thanks

It depends. If you're a student and attending UF, you can get by without a car. In fact, the campus is notoriously pedestrian friendly, to the point where owning a car is more a hassle than a convenience. However, the housing near campus is filled with rambunctious college students, so don't plan on any peace and quiet if you live there.

However, if you're not attending school and just working, or plan on living farther from campus if you're going to school, you'll probably need a car. Gainesville is a VERY bike friendly town though. There are bike lanes throughout the city, and drivers for the most part look out for cyclists. But a car is still highly recommended.

Don't tell me you're thinking of moving down to Hogtown! :-)

I read an article in Discover this morning and UF was mentioned several times. In fact, alot of articles I've been reading lately mention UF. Just entertaining the notion at the moment.

My opinion is biased, but it's a great town. Let me know if you have any other questions. Om works in Gainesville also, and arclite lives there (though he dosen't post much anymore). They could maybe give you some input as well, so you get more of a rounded opinion.

It's a great school - the research department seems to be fantastic - doing alot of work that I'm interested in - only problem - I've discovered NH and can not imagine not having the ocean AND the mountains.... :(

What a croc!
Let's see, the Gaiters just published a media guide with a photo of a crocodile instead of an alligator on the front. Their comment was that they paid for an alligator and got a crocodile instead.

Twinks, there is a 100 foot elevation point around Brooksville. That's the closest you will get to a mountain...

oops!

Anyway, I need to just start school here - get all my missing credits taken care of and then start the hunt for the Masters program - hmmmmm Columbia, UF, UW...

Not having mountains is a major bummer, but the oceans are beautiful in their own right. Thank God for kayaking!
