Greetings All Paddle Chums!

The North Shore Waterfront Conservancy of Staten Island will
participate in the "City of Water Day" paddle to Governor's Island with
the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance and the Staten Island Kayak
Association (SIKA) on Saturday, July 26th.

We plan on launching from Alice Austin House at 9:30 am to shoot across
the narrows under the bridge hug the Brooklyn shore to Governor's
Island. A coast guard escort has been arranged.

We welcome experienced kayakers and/or canoers to join us for this fun
filled excursion. The NSWC has paid for 10 participants, over that
limit will cost a mere $10.00 for food and drink provided on the island.”

I always wondered about the tandems and how they compared to a canoe, especially if both paddlers aren't on the same page.

(Check out some of the kayak fishing magazines and you'll find some neat ideas for outfitting your boat for fishing.)”

I sold it last year as both kids have their own now.

“Ewker, I have had my boat out 2x in the last 4 yrs (once this summer) its plain sucked. But we are making plans for some paddlin trips (canoeing actually) and I am going on a 7 day apostle island trip in about 6 weeks. How about you?”

“I did a lot of paddling last yr on the local streams and creeks but haven't gotten out much this yr. I did buy another kayak (Perception Swifty) so the gf and I can do some paddling. The 14' long kayak just doesn't handle those small streams as weel.

Sounds like your trip will be a lot of fun. Hope you guys take plenty of pics to show everyone.”

“I faxed in all my documents to outward bound and got an email 15 minutes later letting me know that I am in for the Apostle Islands trip. In 5 days I'll call and set up my flight and lodging...this is gonna be fun!”

If you wanna make it down this way, we have the Elk River. Good for an overnight or 2 day trip if you plan for it.”

“I should try to put up a trip this fall for the Elk River in Southern TN. I do have to schedule some classes soon, so I will know when I will be available to go. I have access to canoes, paddles, lifejackets and shuttle services from an old friend that lives near the Elk. We have an annual trip that some of us do every year that hasn't been scheduled yet, so I need to plan around that. We could make this a 2 day trip easily as there is a nice campground halfway thru a 10-12 mile section. Kayakers would have to furnish their own yaks and we would have to pay about $10 a person for someone to shuttle us, but that is very reasonable compared to a full canoe rental on most rivers. There is some history to this section, my family has lived in the area for 200 years! Some whitewater Class 2 with a couple of old washed out grist mills to traverse but most all the water is class 1. This would be a great trip for families and car camping.”

nope not the past few times.

The gf has canoed but never kayaked before. I have had her out on Percy Priest and Old Hickory lakes but not on a flowing river.

If it is a beginner river then I know she would enjoy it.”

“Hubcap, its just treading water for about 10min fully dressed (boots off), making a float out of your pants and doing some other water related activities (5meter drop blindfolded with gear etc...).”

“Initially we had decided to get a canoe, but in the shopping/deciding phase, we shifted gears and decided to go with kayaks.

Now that I have looked at several, I am inclined to go with the Wilderness Systems Pungo 140 or the Riot Edge 13. Anyone have either? Other suggestions comparable to these.

I see us using kayaks for day trips and the occassional weekender. It's quite possible we might make a three or four day trip at some point, but I don't want to buy a kayak for that specific purpose.”

“You might also consider the Dagger Approach and LiquidLogic XP10. They're shorter "crossover" kayaks that would be more maneuverable in mild whitewater.”

“We dont have the pungo but I've been eyeing it for Abigail. Birch is well pleased w/ his tempest and I'd buy another WS. Pungo looks like a nice boat.”

“Chili what kind of water are you planning to kayak on, large lakes, small lakes, ocean, rivers, winding streams?

I have the Pungo 120. I sacrificed some speed and effort on larger water by getting a 12 foot boat, but I wanted something that would maneuver well in some of the smaller rivers and streams in my area that a longer boat would have trouble with.

I've used it on a 3 day weekend trip and it worked well. I just had to pack like I was backpacking, where as when I take my canoe I can pack everything including the kitchen sink.

My advise to you is to try out a number of boats before you buy. A lot of places will let try out several boats on the water. Also I recommend renting one for a day. Remember you could potentially be spending an entire day sitting in a kayak and you want to be in one that is comfortable to be in that long. You won't be able to determine that from a 15 minute demo.”

“BTW when I bought my kayak, which took me about 4 to 5 years to finally get one, it was down to the 12 foot Liquid Logic (forgot what model but I know they no longer make a 12 foot boat) and the Pungo 120. It was very close between the two of them. The Pungo's seat was just a little more comfortable. Everything else was pretty much equal.”

“It doesn't matter which one you get. You'll be shopping for the next one as soon as you get it home.

The Pungo has the big cockpit and is more of a fishing boat. The Riot is more of a traditional kayak like a Perception Carolina. I'd go for a Riot 14.5.”

“I have 3 kayaks. One is a Perception Carolina 14' and the other 2 are Perceptions Prodigy 10. The Prodigys are used for small creeks and streams. The Carolina is for lakes and rivers.”

“Oh almost forgot. Make sure you spend some time using different paddles. Just as important as the actual boat.”
