Its an expensive sport, my wife has already convinced me to get her a lighter paddle and rudder. I asked her what's next and she said to give her a bit to come up with something.”

“I need some input on portable toilets folks. Most of my kayak trips involve river platform camping.ie: there is no land to tend to business) Up until recently the organization in charge of the platform rentals have included a super portable toilet as a part of the fee. It was compact had a lid you screwed off then screwed back on when you were done...no mess and no leaking. Which is perfect considering you've gotta boat the stuff out. Well, no more...now you are to bring your own.

I read thru a thread on portable toilets but the ones discussed there are just far too large to store in my boat. Theres also the 5 gallon bucket & kitty litter idea however I really don't believe I can strap a 5 gallon bucket on my boat and have an effective paddle.

Does anyone else have any ideas or come across one that is compact? The only link I have seen for something even remotely doable is this... http://www.outbackpack.com:80/
I'd kinda like to stear clear of this option as to me dropping kids off at the pool in cardboard just seems like you're asking for trouble.

(ps: the ad for this particular "emergency" toilet is comedy in the rawest form..especially the testimonials.)

#1 is easy, dump it.

#2 get a large one gallon plastic jug with screw on lid. This is for leak proof and secure storage. Get a cheap mini camp chair (the little aluminun foldy jobs. Remove the fabric on the seat to create the bomb hatch (leave enough fabric to keep the chair secure). Open a plastic grocery bag and suspend it under the said hatch (use clothes pins or whatever), when done, bag neatly and seal in a 1 gal ziploc place in one gal plastic jug.”

“I didn't use a poo tube, but I did get a kayak out finally. It's been a colder-than-usual Texas winter and I don't think I've paddled since the last time some one posted on this thread. The water was very chilly, but I managed not to fall in. The lake was very quiet.

I'm doing a river float next weekend and praying for good weather. I want to get on the river before spring break, after which things get crazy.

I'll be burying my poo, rather than trying to pack it out.”

Ft. Worth. I'll never own a dry suit. I decided the neoprene shorts were too hot the other day.

Of course my eskimo-wannabe friends have dry suits cause they're always tipping over.”

Ft worth eh? I lived in the metroplex area for about a year some time ago. I still have family there. Small world, and no you would never need a drysuit there.”

“This is the time of year I usually do a lot of camping out of a kayak. The Brazos River is the best wilderness trail within 100 miles of here, and I got several people out there who would never hike a wilderness trail - one of them being my dad. Here's a picture of me and my dad and the remnants of a freak snowstorm from 2 days before.



One of the guys on that trip was in his canoe, but thought my kayaks were so cool he talked me into taking him on a 30-mile overnight float Friday & Saturday. He'll be picking up his own boat very soon.

“I ran Roaring Branch two weekends ago, Class IV rapids, incredibly beautiful chasms and side stream waterfalls, huge icicles. One of the most beautiful streams I've ever paddled. Here are some pics:

Best thing I've used thus far is the newer empty plastic gallon paint cans. Large plastic Folgers or Maxwell House coffee containers work great also. Both have airtight lids and fit easily into storage. Line it with plastic bags and make sure you have some kitty litter on hand to control the smell. Another advantage, after the trip you can easily toss the whole thing.

“Thout I'd start posting some trip recaps for kayakers in the Chicago area. I paddled the Sugar River Northwest of Rockford this weekend. We did the section from Nelson Road to Two Rivers intersection on the Pecatonica. Some blow downs but overall a lovely float. Went with the paddle club. Beautiful day on Sunday.

Spotted lots of birds. The most spectacular was a Tallinger (sp?) Bright neon red with black. Just striking.

Oh and a 5 foot snake swam up and attacked my boat. Not sure what it was. Tan with splotches. By the end of the trip it was a "Great Rockford Anaconda" and my boat had nearly been capsized. lol

“I was launching at 8PM to start the 6 mile paddle to camp, so I needed a marker light so I didn't get flattened by a motor boat on the lake. The citronella was a bit of a mistake. I ended up with about 1000 dead bugs stuck on the rear of the boat.”
