I think one has to be acclimatized.” 4:30:34 PM 10/15/07 “Just found this thread, never knew we had a TT Kayak Club. My wife and I just go 2 new Wilderness Systems Tsunami 140's. Very nice plastic kayaks although they are a bit on the heavy side. Its an expensive sport, my wife has already convinced me to get her a lighter paddle and rudder. I asked her what's next and she said to give her a bit to come up with something.” 4:33:22 PM 10/15/07 “Sass, if he dips his toe in Lake Superior 10 times he becomes an honorary Yooper. Then he has no excuse. And I expect to see you and the hubby on some of these trips!” 4:36:38 PM 10/15/07 “I think I'll pass. Too much like the ocean.” 5:49:23 PM 10/15/07 “And I expect to see you and the hubby on some of these trips!” Nonconformist 4:36:38 PM 10/15/07 Keep us posted, you have our emails. It'd be great to get out in the big lake next season. Thanks!” 4:34:41 PM 10/17/07 Poppin' a Squat on the River “I need some input on portable toilets folks. Most of my kayak trips involve river platform camping.ie: there is no land to tend to business) Up until recently the organization in charge of the platform rentals have included a super portable toilet as a part of the fee. It was compact had a lid you screwed off then screwed back on when you were done...no mess and no leaking. Which is perfect considering you've gotta boat the stuff out. Well, no more...now you are to bring your own. I read thru a thread on portable toilets but the ones discussed there are just far too large to store in my boat. Theres also the 5 gallon bucket & kitty litter idea however I really don't believe I can strap a 5 gallon bucket on my boat and have an effective paddle. Does anyone else have any ideas or come across one that is compact? The only link I have seen for something even remotely doable is this... http://www.outbackpack.com:80/ I'd kinda like to stear clear of this option as to me dropping kids off at the pool in cardboard just seems like you're asking for trouble. (ps: the ad for this particular "emergency" toilet is comedy in the rawest form..especially the testimonials.) last edited: 10/28/07 4:26:55 PM” 4:25:37 PM 10/28/07 “A cardboard crapper? Dang! That's seems scary.” 4:31:57 PM 10/28/07 “You mentioned having to pack it all out, is the #1 and #2 both? #1 is easy, dump it. #2 get a large one gallon plastic jug with screw on lid. This is for leak proof and secure storage. Get a cheap mini camp chair (the little aluminun foldy jobs. Remove the fabric on the seat to create the bomb hatch (leave enough fabric to keep the chair secure). Open a plastic grocery bag and suspend it under the said hatch (use clothes pins or whatever), when done, bag neatly and seal in a 1 gal ziploc place in one gal plastic jug.” 4:31:59 PM 10/28/07 4:33:59 PM 10/28/07 “Birch..the #1 and #2 are yes, both in the same container...or at least thats what I've become used to. Being a female I dont really have much choice... I can't help but laugh thinking how I'm going to test this all out at home. Not to mention my house is for sale..it would be my luck to have a bunch of mini toilets set up when the realtor unexpectedly shows the house.” 4:39:32 PM 10/28/07 “please dont tell me that the instructions involve the word "insert".” 4:40:02 PM 10/28/07 “I'm fascinated by the torpedo. I think that would work...but I'm a little scared at the same time.” 4:43:02 PM 10/28/07 “It wont be easy carlette, it'll take some time, skill and lots of paper towels. Good luck, dont post pics LOL.” 4:43:13 PM 10/28/07 “hello...I'm sitting here thinking, "can I even hit a coffee filter?" Drawing a bullseye on them is coming to mind now...lol...this could be more fun than first thought last edited: 10/28/07 4:46:29 PM” 4:45:47 PM 10/28/07 “wear depends and carry a tube of A&D ointment for the inevitable end of the day cleanup.” 6:25:01 AM 10/29/07 “I didn't use a poo tube, but I did get a kayak out finally. It's been a colder-than-usual Texas winter and I don't think I've paddled since the last time some one posted on this thread. The water was very chilly, but I managed not to fall in. The lake was very quiet. I'm doing a river float next weekend and praying for good weather. I want to get on the river before spring break, after which things get crazy. I'll be burying my poo, rather than trying to pack it out.” 3:33:38 AM 2/25/08 “Glad to see someone is getting out there. Still a 6 weeks at least till we can even think about it. But with drysuits we hope to be out ASAP.I only made it out once last year... Poo tube, lol I forgot about that. Where abouts in Tx are you?” 3:44:13 AM 2/25/08 How Climbers Poop 5:16:25 AM 2/25/08 “I'm looking forward to getting back out on the water. I did a cold trip back in end of November when it was freezing out. It was a blast! But no one would dare do another cold kayaking trip with me. Guess I'll be waiting til the weather breaks, which is fine, I have plenty of other winter sports to keep me busy lol.” 5:33:37 AM 2/25/08 “"Where abouts in Tx are you?" Ft. Worth. I'll never own a dry suit. I decided the neoprene shorts were too hot the other day. Of course my eskimo-wannabe friends have dry suits cause they're always tipping over.” 6:58:26 AM 2/25/08 “Toejam, Ft worth eh? I lived in the metroplex area for about a year some time ago. I still have family there. Small world, and no you would never need a drysuit there.” 7:56:43 AM 2/25/08 “This is the time of year I usually do a lot of camping out of a kayak. The Brazos River is the best wilderness trail within 100 miles of here, and I got several people out there who would never hike a wilderness trail - one of them being my dad. Here's a picture of me and my dad and the remnants of a freak snowstorm from 2 days before. ![]() One of the guys on that trip was in his canoe, but thought my kayaks were so cool he talked me into taking him on a 30-mile overnight float Friday & Saturday. He'll be picking up his own boat very soon. last edited: 3/16/08 5:59:43 AM” 6:01:56 AM 3/16/08 “This one has a lot of feel: ”6:11:50 AM 3/16/08 “Nice pics, It's getting to be that time of year again. Time to get those yaks out again. Ain't no more cane on the Brazos.......” 8:06:04 AM 3/16/08 “I ran Roaring Branch two weekends ago, Class IV rapids, incredibly beautiful chasms and side stream waterfalls, huge icicles. One of the most beautiful streams I've ever paddled. Here are some pics: http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/562722063LQHyYZ?vhost=outdoors” 8:10:50 AM 3/16/08 “I'm so excited for the season to start!” 7:10:32 PM 3/16/08 “Hey Scorchie:) I can't wait either:) Make sure you post lots of pics this season:) Hope you have a good season. After all it was your (gone kayaking) status on messenger that made me buy my kayak the same day:)” 10:38:53 PM 3/16/08 “We all love it when Scorchy posts pictures.” 3:32:52 AM 3/17/08 “I know - oops sorry for "making you" buy a kayak LOL - NOTTTTT. I usually only post the pics on my Myspace page now... too much of a hassle posting them there and on Photobucket and then also printing them out for hardcopies. Too time consuming. But I'll be sure to at least post a few on a thread!” 3:25:11 PM 3/17/08 “I need some input on portable toilets folks. Most of my kayak trips involve river platform... Carlette 4:25:37 PM 10/28/07 Best thing I've used thus far is the newer empty plastic gallon paint cans. Large plastic Folgers or Maxwell House coffee containers work great also. Both have airtight lids and fit easily into storage. Line it with plastic bags and make sure you have some kitty litter on hand to control the smell. Another advantage, after the trip you can easily toss the whole thing. last edited: 3/18/08 10:24:14 AM” 10:19:22 AM 3/18/08 “Just be careful making your coffee in the morning. ;-D” 10:24:33 AM 3/18/08 “ ![]() last edited: 3/18/08 10:19:45 AM” 10:24:48 AM 3/18/08 Sugar River - Illinois “Thout I'd start posting some trip recaps for kayakers in the Chicago area. I paddled the Sugar River Northwest of Rockford this weekend. We did the section from Nelson Road to Two Rivers intersection on the Pecatonica. Some blow downs but overall a lovely float. Went with the paddle club. Beautiful day on Sunday. Spotted lots of birds. The most spectacular was a Tallinger (sp?) Bright neon red with black. Just striking. Oh and a 5 foot snake swam up and attacked my boat. Not sure what it was. Tan with splotches. By the end of the trip it was a "Great Rockford Anaconda" and my boat had nearly been capsized. lol [url]www.prairiestatecanoeists.org[url]” 5:20:59 AM 6/02/08 “Scarlet tanager is what you saw. They are pretty! Sounds like fun, Dhutch. Birch and I are severely slacking in the kayaking this year. The boats still haven't seen the water in 2008.” 5:38:39 AM 6/02/08 “Yep, that's what it was!! Soooo bright. I've been slow getting the yak in but have had the canoe out quite a bit practicing my steering. It's just been such a crappy spring with only a few nice weekend days. I'm hoping we've turned a corner. Miss you guys.” 6:05:39 AM 6/02/08 “Miss you too! Maybe sometime we can do another visit...” 9:07:07 AM 6/02/08 “Any time and now that I have the canoe, I could show you one of our rivers” 10:19:15 AM 6/02/08 “come to the red in a few weeks hutchie and run with sass and i through 15.5 miles of tough trail! then you two can visit. :)” 3:57:13 PM 6/02/08 “Took the kayak out over Memorial Day weekend on it's first overnight. ”7:39:56 AM 6/03/08 “nice! i like the fishing pole, bilge sponge, and patio torch... nice touch! do you burn citronella in it? lol!” 7:57:58 AM 6/03/08 “I was launching at 8PM to start the 6 mile paddle to camp, so I needed a marker light so I didn't get flattened by a motor boat on the lake. The citronella was a bit of a mistake. I ended up with about 1000 dead bugs stuck on the rear of the boat.” 8:07:29 AM 6/03/08 “see, it might have made for good fishing... fish are attacted to lights and you would be chumming with the dead bugs.... method to your madness!” 9:52:29 AM 6/03/08 “That's what those kids on the Root River needed! Remember the one flashlight? Funny that one of the only things I remember that one of them was a middle linebacker.” 10:40:32 AM 6/03/08 “Oh and I wore my headlamp as well so I had the state required 2 lights on the boat.” 10:51:21 AM 6/03/08 “HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW!” 11:19:00 AM 6/03/08 “LOL! Just talked to "Daddy" the other day. He's getting hitched!!” 12:25:17 PM 6/03/08 “ok kiddies, I am so out of here. going kayakig on the ocean..... hope I do not end up in Russia” 5:10:21 AM 6/13/08 “Have Fun!” 5:22:52 AM 6/13/08 “So do the Russians.” 5:29:51 AM 6/13/08 “may the chum spread wide and your paddle be swift!” 5:28:44 PM 6/13/08 Jump to Page << prev
