I have a BARE shorty. It's a well made suit.

It's going to be 84-85 and sunny on both Saturday and Sunday. Think I should wear it?

I'm in the water tomorrow! Expecting 1-3 inches of snow but the water is open and the birds are migrating. Got the dry suitout and have located the goretex gloves. =) Full report tomorrow....

Dag Nabbit! Why can't all vehicles have the same stinkin' size luggage racks? Have to go to REI this morning and buy adapters for the new, wider luggage rack. It's very considerate of Yakima to make so many different little adapters.

woohoo!

We made it out for our first paddle of the year. Cool temps and a breezy gray day but wonderful. We paddled up stream (very strong current) for about an hour then cruised back downriver in 15 minutes or so. I decided to run some pretty nice rapids then come back up. The rapids were fun going down, I didnt have my bow facing head on the way back up though and got slammed sideways flipped and dumped. Glad I had my dry suit, bummed that I didnt have the collar tight, I got soaked. Well worth it though..

Sunny, I think the water was prolly in the low 40's. I wouldnt have tried had the rapids been far from the car. They were at the bridge maybe 200yds from where we parked.

Saw some wood ducks, a buncha mallards and a mink house. Didn't get to go out in the open water where the loons stop over. =(
That was by far the strongest current I've ver paddled against. At times it took what seemed like at least five minutes to make it through some spots that were maybe ten feet. It was hard work. Was hot on the way upstream and then got really cold when we got out of the boats.

I have a problem: My right leg gets painfully numb when I'm out for more then 15 minutes. My foot pegs are where they need to be. Anyone else ever had this happen and how can I fix it?

Right leg Numb....
A LOT of paddlers get this, in one or both knees....

One solution is known as a knee roll...placing a rolled up bath towel, sleeping pad or other such object under the knee(s) will help with this!

I personally use a Nalgene Bottle for my knee problems....Nalgene Bottles are great dry boxes for items like keys, cell phones, chapstick and the like...(If it'll keep water IN it'll keep water OUT). I clip a cheap key ring carabiner through the cap loop and onto the strap that adjusts the seat back, then place the bottle under my knee (Double duty).

A paddler friend uses a Thermarest Ultralight pad folded lengthwise and rolled for the same purpose....that's also Double Duty.

Hey Troll THANKS...I have been wondering about that. I found that stretching my legs while I paddle works too.

I got a sunburn and it was so hot I had to swim last weekend on the Brazos River in Texas. Hoping for more good weather this weekend.

Sass, do you have a good thick foam seat pad?
toejam
7:12:50 AM
3/17/06

I do. I have a Wilderness systems Tempest and it has a cushy seat pad. The Perception Avatar we have is the only kayak I've ever sat in that I don't have this problem. I'm thinking that maybe the seat edge is impinging on a nerve. It feels like sciatica symptoms almost....burning and painful tingling. My knees are up already but I'll give a pad or bolster of some sort a try next time.

I do stretch out my legs as I'm permitted. But in the instance of yesterday's paddle, if I stopped paddling long enough to stretch my leg I was forty feet down stream and had lost momentum. I couldn't stretch until we turned around, fifty minutes into the trip.

Thanks a lot for your input Supertroll.

I managed to get in 5 miles in my yak and 10 miles on my bike today. Great sunny day 77 degrees and a nice breeze. I gotta work tonight so I didn't get too wild. I may do 2 or 3 miles in the yak tommrow afternoon when I wake up before work. For at least the next 30 nights in a row, I'll be working from 17:30 to 05:30. I'm gonna try to yak or bike a few miles on most of the days I not too tired or bad weather prevents. I spent the whole day yesterday cutting grass, cutting limbs and raking leaves. Hopefully an hour or two a week will keep the grass up till I'm finished with this work schedule.

It’s supposed to be about 75 and sunny tomorrow. I’m going out to Cedar Key to paddle to the barrier islands and have a little picnic. Sun, sand, surf, baguette, cheese, seafood...

I’ll probably have to bring a windbreaker because 75 is awfully chilly to be kayaking in shorts and a t-shirt… brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Taking Photo's of the Outriggers for a friend, and just paddling open water...

The Barge traffic is beginning to build, and there were even a few Sail Boats out and about. Mainly though, it was me and the Many types of birds, Ring Neck, wood Duck, Heron, Sea Gulls, even a few wood peckers...

Did I mention that I am Burnt from the sun?...note to self, SUNSCREEN!

There's a TT kayaking club? This group gets more interesting all the time.

The first link is to photos taken behind my house in Damascus, Virginia, on Laurel Creek. I can put in here and float class I and II rapids (little stuff) for eight miles down to South Holston Lake.

http://www.damascus.org/kayakers06.html

The next link is to information on the upper Laurel, which in rainy season is run by lots of clubs, mostly out of the Carolinas.

http://www.vacreepertrail.us/kayakers.html

I use an inflatable Aire Tomcat for the low whitewater stuff, and a Necky Dolphin for sea kayaking.

Divinity, for the sailing part I have a G-Cat (a Hobie on steroids) but these TVA lakes are too full of jetskis and powerboaters for decent sailing. So I just use the kayaks in the upper coves and hollows where the stinkpotters rarely go.

Bought my first kayak over the weekend, a Mainstream Twist. A friend has one that I used several times last year and I liked its stability, short length, and small draft.

Now I just need some warm weather to get it on the water.

Don't rightly know
but it's a LOT lighter than my old Euro paddle.

after looking, Carlisle says the 230 CM paddle weighs between 36 to 38 OZ
(?) so where's the 2 OZ difference?

supertroll, nice deal on the paddle. I am looking for a new paddle. Wont be anytime soon, but it will be carbon fibre.

Went out with sass yesterday. Beautiful sun and mild wind with enough occasional gusts to get a workout. Saw an amazing variety of birds. An osprey, cormorants, hooded mergansers, buffleheads, mallards, canadian geese, tern and at one spot 46 swans in a big group. They congregate there annually, its really cool to hear them "talking" to one another. they have a quiet high pitched chatter thing they do.

Sass and I swapped boats trying to solve her numb leg issue and after removing all the hip padding from "her" boat I was able to fit in it and actually like the feel and fit better than in "mine" so we traded. Her leg never numbed after the swap so she is a happy camper. A great day for sure!

We also saw the carp doing their crazy spring dance. Darn fish always scare the craop out of me when they breach right by my boat, lol. Never fails.

Arclite, I handled a werner paddle like that except it wasn't bent shaft. It was lite as a feather, gorgeous and $399. Birch yelled at me to put it down immediately! =)
Some people just have no appreciation....

We paddle with some friends who rep for a bunch of companies and also teach kayaking. Often I've heard how great my paddle would be as a "spare", at 32 oz and $199 it's not quite nice enough for everyday use, lol. At least in their world.
