...oh and it rained on monday a little but the trails were covered and it was dry enough to ride. one trail was really muddy in "the usual spots" but it was open... 95% pct dry i would guess... i guess it's known for being muddy. i tried to stick to the dry spots which wasn't that tough. most were near stream crossings/ravines anyway and i am betting they never get totally dry.

Yogi. You shouldn't have to do that. you need to crank the collar down more. Try not to torque it off but if you do, a new bolt is cheap.

I would think you could rough up the post with some sand paper maybe. Is it aluminum or carbon fiber?

Heya JS, Rosy's right you shouldn't have to do anything to the stem, just crank down the collar till it quits moving.

I finally got a new derailleur hanger ordered, hopefully it will show up soon...I seriously need to do some mtn. biking!

I finally got to go do some trails near my house today. It is called MoMBA and is part of Five Rivers Metroparks. This place was unf#ckingbelievable! This is a world class mountain biking park. The engineering was very impressive and while the trails loop around and look very close you hardly see the other trails.

There's one area called Hawk's Lair that I went through but had zero business being in. It was beyond my limited newbee skills. Ya know, I never noticed just how wide my handle bar is until doing this trail. The one wipe out I did have was a spot where there was a tree on either side of the trail and while I was watching one side I nailed the other tree. I fell down and said phuck...

That'd be awesome. The whole trail is about 8.2 miles. I'm aching this morning a little. Mountain biking is a LOT different than regular biking.

15 miles today in Kettle Moraine North. I am getting faster and more confident. I am tired but it was a lot of fun. Climbing was a lot easier this time.

after a near death experience today (NOBODY TELL MY WIFE) i ordered some pads... not a full body suit but arm/leg armor. i now know why they made me sign a waiver at REI when i bought the bike.

i lost a reflector... broke off. also lost the plastic thing on the rear wheel that keeps the chain from popping off into the spokes.

the seat post would not stay put, so i took it off, wiped off any oil that was on it (not sure why it was there in the first place) and rubbed it with dirt. it didn't move after that!

FINALLY figured out how to keep my weight on the rear tire when climbing. that feeling of popping a wheelie the entire way up to the top is cooler than cat crap.

I'm thinking of putting together a small TT group outing for the Lake Hope/Zaleski area in southern Ohio. I may get a group camp site and we'd just hang out and bike all weekend. They have like 22 miles of some of the best trails in the state.

I'm going shopping for a shorter handle bar, that's for sure. I'm also taking the damn toe cages off the peddles too.

i have to stick to what i have. i have already spent too much on the bike thing. i found a bent steel rod in the road the other day that i recognized as a rear derailleur guard like on my sons bike. that thing has saved me replacing james's rear derailleur about 20x now... i am not sure why this isn't standard kit on every mountain bike. i am going to see if i can install it on mine. i am not keen on drilling holes in my frame for an experiment but if i can install it without drastic mods i'll do it.

...already looking forward to next weekend!

I'm now thinking I'll go on the cheap and just cut my existing bars off rather than spending the money. I was hoping to save some weight with lighter bars but it'd be silly for me to start into the weight savings slippery slope. Do you have a pic of the derailer guard? Not sure what it is you're talking about.

HPM's trying to get me psyched into getting a mountain bike. I'll get one, in my own time, thanks.

He's also trying to get me psyched about the "Ride the Divide" race, which roughly parallels the continental divide trail. It runs on trails, f.s. roads, fire roads, and a few public roads. You race on bikes, from Banff to the Mexican border, in less than a month. That's over a 100 miles a day, generally. They made a movie about the 2008 race, that started in lots of snow. This is something HPM wants to do. I think he's nuts.

It's a cool movie, actually. I've watched it once, HPM 4 or 5 times now. The scenery is gorgeous, ans the music is awesome. It's also called "Ride the Divide."

Did you need him to be on this to find out he's nuts? Didn't htink so ;)

Nope, I've already mentioned it. ;D

I don't know how the heck he'd train for this, though. Social dynamics (having a riding partner, or riding in a group) play a big part in it.

Yall could move out here - he'd have ample opportunity to find training partners as well as appropriate terrain to train on.

She hasn't gotten injured in a race yet. Last night I took out to Denver to let her ride the trails for practice. On her second lap she decided to tackle the black (highly technical/ challenging) spur trail, and wiped out on a rotted log there. We had to pull a good sized thorn out of her knee that had gone straight in and broke off under the skin. She wasn't too happy about that but she's fine. During her races I'm a little concerned about kids practicing bad trail/ race etiquette and blocking her passes. She about knocked a kid off his bike in her first race for doing just that.

Thanks to WildBill, I have one...

Wasn't on a bike for at least 15 years...so it wasn't a graceful start.
Anyway, mountain biking...I might have a new hobby.
