Concealed weapons permits, applications skyrocketing

Cynthia Jones doesn't need a fancy gun.

"Just so when I fire it, it brings somebody down," said the 50-year-old single mother. "It's not something that needs to make a fashion statement for me because it's not something people will see."

In fact, the less people see of her gun the better, she said.

That won't mean the Ocala woman will hide her purchase under her mattress or in the drawer of her night stand. It will more than likely end up holstered on her hip or strapped to her ankle.

"I just want to be able to protect myself and my daughter," said Jones, who recently finished firearms training and is applying for a concealed weapons permit. "While I'm waiting for the police, what can happen in 45 minutes, what can happen in 15? What can happen in five?

"I don't want to be the victim of a crime," she said. "I know it's out there. I know it happens."

Jones is not alone in choosing to carry a gun.

She is among a skyrocketing number of Floridians, including many from Marion and Alachua counties, applying for concealed weapons licenses.

Ten years ago, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services issued 258 concealed weapon licenses in Alachua County, according to records. Between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010, the department issued 1,912 licenses. Marion County saw a similar trend......more.......

1 each 30-06 w/ scope, 1 each 22 Mag lever, 1 each 22 pistol (multi cylinder). All Ruger. And a nice small BB batt for close in if needed.

One: It is all I need
As my moniker might point out to you guys I like blade weapons and I am good with them.

When I need a gun I carry a 12" barrel 44 Mag. I still have some armor piercing shells that I got from a military friend of mine.

I like the 22 Magnum hollow point since it transfers alot of energy into the target, rather than just piercing through. About 55 grains, shorter distance, but for the longer reach a decent 30 cal with a split point does just fine too.

I just managed to score 60 rounds of SLAP ammunition in 7.62.....

Armored vehicles are no longer a suitable place to hide.

Opie, not sure if you ever used it but try www.ammoengine.com when you are looking for bulk. Lots of great deals. I am glad that prices are finally coming down, #&%!$ was crazy for a while. I was able to score some ammo this wknd at a gun show for about 60% off. I bought everything the dude had and wish he had more.

My great uncle's Swedish 1899 M96/38 has just now been passed down to my mother. This thing is in EXCELLENT condition!!

dad just got a new Ukrainian(i think) AK47, less than 40 rounds through it. I also convinced him to let me take his SKS that he acquired in Cambodia or Laos, and reassemble and do a light cleaning on it.

I have had some engineers from Canada down here working on a system - putting in 16 hour day/7days a week. I offered to take them out to blast some 45's and 223's since it's almost impossible for them to do that at home. Had to do a quick gun safty course since they had no experience. They had a good safe Wyoming firearm experience.

In a couple hrs I am going to take my oldest to the range. She is giddy (she hasnt shot since january). I'll get to try out my new (to me anyway) 9mm. I will also try the "dot torture test" if I get the time.

Just when everyone thought that the pump action shotgun couldn't be improved, Benelli unveiled the Nova Pump. Completely original and innovative, the Nova Pump incorporates its polymer stock and lightweight receiver into a single unit for unsurpassed strength and weather resistance. Italian styling and high-tech ergonomics, such as distinctive grooves on the pistol grip and fore-end in place of conventional checkering, complement the Nova's innovative engineering.

With dual-action bars and rotary head locking lugs, the Nova will handle anything from target loads to 3½" magnums. To help dampen the recoil of today's super-heavy magnum loads, the Nova 12-gauge is specially designed to accept a Benelli recoil reducer.

Available in black, Advantage® Max-4 HDTM, Timber HDTM and new Realtree® APG HDTM finishes, and as a youth model or slug gun, the Benelli Nova is the most versatile pump-action shotgun ever made - and just when everyone thought the pump gun couldn't be improved.

I just field stripped my dad's SKS from Cambodia. It kinda makes you think all kind of weird stuff. This gun hasn't been stripped since before it was captured, and hasn't been fired since '74.

I think i'll tap some of the dirt out of the gas tube cover into a vial.

you guys should see the wicked cool flames I'm gonna spray paint on it once i clean it up.

them is live rounds in that thing. and she has a good finger grip too. And the sks mostly is a china made one. Didn't know of any other than a few from country of Vietnam that were made during the war then.

Finger grip looks ok, but unless the target is very close or she sighted in with the gun at that angle, she is liable to miss completely.

I would take my chances and run for it.
The recoil has a chance of popping the saline balloons in sympathetic shock (or a hot casing) which would really screw up any follow up shot after the first missed.
