Just a tip
You might want to do a thread search on the topic before you proceed at your own risk.

You are wrong about that!

A few years ago my middle son stepped in human crap.
It was in the middle of the trail!

You may ask how I knew it was human.
Dogs don't wipe their ass!

He was ahead of me......I was hangin' back with Drag-ass #3 son.
We got a good laugh though.
We kept seeing traces of it for 1/2 mile.
Vibram sole really picks it up good!

LOL! Just another reason why I have self-cleaning lugs. We were graced by human crap right next to the trail once. Nice!

Unless you're trekking in Africa and you're deep in elephant territory!

(Yelling) CAN YOU HEAR ME IN THERE?!?!? HOLD ON--JOHN WENT TO FIND A BACKHOE!! HOW DID YOU STEP IN IT ANYWAY?!?!

I have encountered far more human deposits than dog.

All other factors being equal I would rather see a dog on the trail than a squatting human.

I bring my dog...
he is a fairly good dog...just wants to be part of all the action...hates not to be included...there are some on here that are anti dogs, but they are the dolts. but I do respect that that is their right (new attitude) and won't go on hikes where it is going to be a problem...there are plenty of trails...plenty of trips and plenty of people that have no problems with dogs.

where are you located in this great nation of ours...oh yeah, I just heard that there won't be any wilderness left soon, so you better hurry up and get out there, before its all gone.

We were in th Winds and were walking from our campsite, which was in the trees, by a campsite which was just outside the trees to the water source to filter water.

I looked up only to see this mans son sitting on a log, right in their campsite, taking a #&%!$. Literally right in the campsite next to the fire. Needless to say it was totally disgusting!!!

You'd think the guy would have tried to teach that kid a little about where the proper place was to #&%!$.

I take my dogs hiking, even canoe camping. One of them is great on the trails and around camp, and rarely even requires a leash. The other, however, can't remember her own name once the leash is gone and she can run free. In general, we try to follow the posted rules regarding leashes, which means you should be using them most of the time. Your own experience and confidence should be the barometer for your discression. Knowing how your dogs will react to certain situations, and always stay alert.

All in all, I think taking them adds to the trip, and they certanly appreciate the adventure as much as we humans do.

I have used a couple of packs for dogs, and have found that, for the money, the ones made by Wehana work best. Others tend not to stay positioned on the dog as well.

As long as the dog is kept on a leash I have no problems. The huge German Shepard that was stalking me at Marie Lakes last summer made me a bit nervous...Once I got my pepper spray out he didn't seem to want to hang around..Go figure

Thanks for the info on the packs, nothing more I would love is to be able to take them with me someday. Also I would never want to have someone be scared or nervous of them. Shepards can be intimadating, but if you sweet talk any dog and try to share a Scoobie Snack with them I>E> Mel Gibson, just about any dog will love ya back. Myself I would go above and beyond to make sure my dogs are only out there to enjoy & respect nature as much as we do and to get along with fellow Trail folks too. besides Yellow Labs will only lick ya to death and see if you some goodies in your pocket :-)

I hear ya. My dogs have been involved in some vicious licking attacks, but all they ever drew was drool. It's funny just how afraid of dogs some people are. Before I owned dogs, I was biten by one, but I am certainly not afraid of them.

As for the benefits of a dog-pack, most dogs can effectively carry about 1/3 of their body weight. If the average lab weighs 80 pounds and you take two of them, they can alleviate you of over 50lbs of their food and your gear.

Khatru is a depressed mess...
we went out on our first canoe trip last weekend, and he got to swim for as long as he wanted and go in and out of the canoe and run and follow along the banks...and now, he has to listen and stay in the yard and walk on his leash...today at lunch he wouldn't even come out of his room. I'm gonna take em to the Doggy psychitrist and get him on some doggy paxil...This is too much...you don't see me moping around cause I cant camp...so why is he...its not like we dont' play outside every night...what a mess.

A well behaved dog with a responsible person in charge is fine on the trail. But, be sure your dog is doing OK - consider getting some dog booties just in case and be ready with some first aid.

this is actually vasque violet. I am too shocked to even change identities!!!!!!

Where is micah????? You mean to tell me that he has not said one word on this thread???? Is this really the twilight zone?

All good tips guys!!! And I didn't know the formula for max pack weight for doggies, so thanks for posting it. Angel is too spoiled to carry her own water. Can't teach a 6 year old bullmastiff new triks!! She loves to be on the trail though.

I am so glad to see a doggie positive thread. It warms my animal lover heart!!!!

LNT = LDH (leave dip#&%!$ at home)
I hiked the Old Logger's Path with RichB and others back in 2000, and the Sat when we broke for lunch, while sitting there back against a tree I kept smelling a$$. Thinking someone was breaking wind I made a comment but noone would fess up to it. Well, I HAD to get up from that spot, and when I did I noticed a pile and a wad of TP immediately behind the tree I was sitting against. And we were in what looked like a campsite!!!

by the way.....
make sure you check out the trails ahead of time to see if dogs are allowed. Many national parks and most wildlife refuges do not allow dogs except in places like parking areas; and they are not allowed within other park types occasionally either....

there are a couple books out on dog friendly areas, also. i can't remember names off the top of my head. sorry.
