Personally, even if it's a refirb, I wouldn't care. I bought my Garmin 305 bike GPS refirb and have never had the first problem with it.

I'd like to know what is better about the new chip, too. No time right now to surf the net for answers.

I splurge on hiking clothes, too. I can't think of the brand I use, its not one you find in stores. They started out doing clothes for boaters - fast-dry, lots of venting, etc, and found a new market selling to all outdoors types. The pants I have have mesh all the way up the sides but with a zipper so I can start out in the 40's in the morning and then unzip when it gets to the 50's. Same for my shirt. I also have a short-sleeve version of the shirt w/o zippers on the mesh, good for summer use. Everything dries fast, all synthetic. And it cost - I think it was in the $50-$75 range for each item 6 years ago. Haven't had to replace any of it yet.

It's really true for the most part, partcularly with clothes: you get what you pay for. I have splurged on patagucci when I can afford it and all of their gear has lasted and lasted. And when it hasn't (worn out a couple of rain jackets), they take them back and give me full credit so I can buy something else. We'll see how the REI pants hold up, but I have a fleece REI vest that was given to me by someone and it gets abused and is holding up great. Most of Columbia stuff, which tends to be on the lower end of the clothing spectrum, has also held up well. The 50 spf hiking shirt I got yesterday is made by them (in India) and seems to be of good quality.

According to what I have gleaned from reviews about the Garmin 60CSx, most people did not like the the change to the new chip (Mediatek). According the Garmin, it should be a better receiver chip, but honestly the "new" one works great to me. The only thing I have to compare it to is my old Geko 201. It is light years ahead of the Geko. It can get a lock in my house of 10+ satellites in a few seconds. I have used it in the car a couple of times but have yet to get on a trail with the new one. After turning my ankle (again) last week I may just take a dayhike this weekend.

I know most here wouldn't consider this gear, but when I was in FL. a few weeks ago I picked a new sketchbook, with really nice, heavyweight paper suitable for watercolors. Permanent markers won't go through it. I also got a set of sepia toned india ink markers, ranging from super fine from super fine to brush type nibs. I've learned the most unforgiving media for me to draw with is markers. Trying to be as precise as possible, without overlapping strokes too much, is a b!tch. I take the sketchbook with everywhere now.

Those REI zip offs I had lasted me like 10 hard years. Now hiking shirts is the area where I will go cheap. Doesn't matter what the shirt costs it'll end up smelling like fresh phucked goat.

I had been looking for a new, lightweight and stylish bag since the beginning of the year. I needed one that would be big enough to hold a folder and a couple of books. Today I found just the right bag :-)
It's an Osprey

scored a Patagonia down sweater today for 50% off ;) yay. It weighs half of what my other down jacket weighs. Now, if i had some money to throw around, I'd say I'd be well on my way to becoming a real gram weenie.

No, I bought it here in an outdoor shop. I love it too.
It's essentially like a messenger bag, but more ladylike. It's still sporty, for the urban outdoors, as well as the office. On the back side it has a small strap, fastened with a buckle, that fits around the waist. It takes off some weight from the shoulder.
It has a sleeve for the hydration bladder...err, or laptop. And yes, there are a couple of extra loops and I am sure they can be used for the ice axe.

Found one online! What's funny is that it's actually a man purse. All the TT guys would look stunning wearing this accessory. Especially that 32oz guy. He luuuuuuvs Osprey stuff.

I have been in need of a new pot for a while that would accommodate two people. I really liked the GSI Pinnacle Dualist Cook System so I broke down and bought it. I don't really think I will need both bowl/cups. While in the store I tried putting a small fuel canister and the pocketrocket and everything fit. I would actually use the Snow Peak Giga Power stove so a large cannister would work as well.

At the moment I need a pot that would accommodate one person, carrots, celery, diced potatos, an onion, a few leaves of laurel , some salt and pepper.

I also have the Snow Peak TI Mini Solo Combo. Very compact, light, and able to store either the pocketrocket or snowpeak. I used this on the JMT for all meals and even shared with others for speed.

I think I am gonna pull the trigger on this one.

Its time to start hitting the walk-in sites since they dont require reservations and would be a good starting point for backcountry experience for the tot (weve done ONE backcountry trip when she was 1 and I didnt really enjoy it that much).

Ive been really happy with the Cloudburst over the past five years but with the bigger fam, I need MORE ROOM.

Yeah, he seems to have borrowed that design and applied it to several models. I am curious about how it would do in the wind since there is so much tent and it's silnylon. The pics make it look like you can get it pretty taut...

Had to replace my Eureka Spitfire since I managed to put a large tear in it when I broke one of the poles.

With mixed feelings due to so many conflicting reviews I received my new Marmot EOS today. Anyone else have one of these?

I am looking for a light, synthetic, insulated jacket.
Does anybody have the Atom LT jacket/hoody from Arc'terix?

nope, but Arc'teryx stuff is extremely well made - and correspondingly expensive. The new line of Eddie Bauer stuff is sposed to be really good - they make a good down sweater that I'm considering. GoLite makes good stuff as well - a bit less pricey than the dead dino-bird company's stuff.

I am looking to buy a new pair of over pants (winter type)Any suggestions. I would like them to be functional (pockets) and made to deal with the weather extremes that can catch by surprise. But i do not want to sweat my A** off in them either.

After looking at multiple options and getting feedback on field performance, we have decided to go ahead and get the SixMoon Lunar Duo.

I have the SixMoon Europa and it has been flawless in field. However, for two people it is a pain in the behind to go in and out one door in the front. Our requirements were two doors, two vestibules and tall enough to sit up in. I ruled out tarp tents as NGB wanted to make sure the snakes and bugs couldn't find a new home.
