I spent every single penny of my dividend and got all sorts of neat stuff, including some baby gear for my best friend who is pregnant.

in terms of bp'ing gear, we got a new cold-weather stove... the coleman exponent feather 442. i've been lusting after cow patty's for several winters now.

Don't know if it counts but. . .

4 brand new really big tires on my truck!

Thank God for my tax refund as the threads were just beginning to show on the old ones. He tells me I need new rotors, but I am going to have to take a look at that myself, they were fine a few months ago. He shouldn't think I'm the average woman. I'm pretty sure I know what it feels like to drive with warped rotors now. Long story, LOL!

that counts... that counts.

i bought my truck in 2001 and it only has 28k miles on it. i still am working through my first set of tires. ungh! bought it to tow a boat and that's about all it does. i really need to sell the thing! the boat too!

Well, I work only 1/2 mile from home and yet I still managed to put over 20,000 miles on this truck in less than two years. It was definetly time for new tires. Lot of time on those Scout campouts, LOL!

Speaking of the Akto. I'm thinking about putting mine out on the market. It's a few years old, but still in real good shape. I have to find something (read consolidation on gear) that will work four seasons and free stands. I love the tent, but in the Michigan late springs, it can't vent enough for me.

Any one know some one, let me know.

Gossamer Gear G6 Whisper Ultralight Backpack

This is a big move for me and yet it's a pretty natural one. I have gone frameless for a long time now and my Mariposa is generally "flat" on weekends... right now I have to fluff up my sleeping bag to keep the pack full enough to wear...

http://www.gossamergear.com/cgi-bin/gossamergear/g6_whisper_uberlight.html

$60... 2000 ci @ 3.8 oz... a full pound lighter than my current backpack with 900 ci less volume.

That's $252.63/lb if you are wondering...

Base pack weight is down to 5.12 lbs with this pack for a solid 3-season gear list. Skin-out weight for a weekend trip will be 10-12 lbs. This is a big leap for me from my Mariposa but I think I am ready for it.

No waist-belt but since my total pack won't weight more than 8-10 lbs for a weekend trip there isn't need for one. I am wondering if I'll miss the stability of the waist-belt when I run on the trail but I have seen reviews of people that ran while wearing this pack and none complained about this.

Can't wait!

No Nimblefoot I got the 47 lb. After much debate and discussion with the guys at the shop we felt best with the black gold because I want to use it for adventure races and it's a little sturdier. You never know what they're going to make us paddle on.

I went with the Bell because of their hull design and reputation for quality.

It's beeeeauuuutiful and I'm a happy girl! :-D

Campmor Goofed
so - i got a campmor catalog the other day and there's this Lafuma bag advertised as a "SPecial Purchase" and a great price. As advertised: 1 lb 12 oz, 25 degree rated, 650 fill. 65 bucks! Sounds good, right?

Well, it arrived today - its actually 600 fill and 45 degree rated.

At first I was "Send it back!"

But, then I got to thinking - for that price, and that weight, I should keep it and I'll use it on mild weather trips and in summer - it'll be good in a bivy.

Plus - the dang thing stuffs to the size of a Thermarest 3/4 length pad - its wicked small!

Maybe i'll try it out this weekend in Rocky Mtn - we'll see what the forecasted temps are gonna be.

It's about twice the size of a beer bottle when packed!

Jacks 'R Better No Sniveller Universal Quilt.

Weight = 20 oz

To head off Ewker at the pass... my sleeping bag weights 20 oz, so the quilt is 2 oz heavier than my 40 degree sleeping bag.

The No Sniveller has an opening and can be work as a "Serape" and I think will easily replace my 8oz down inner jacket.

There is a weight savings of 6oz. This is significant.

The quilt has 2.5" of loft and so should sleep warmer than my 40 degee sleeping bag that is sewn-through (the quilt is baffled) and only has 1.9" of loft. So the added 2oz of weight in the quilt is providing an extra .6" of loft... i.e. more insulation.

Of course there is the "look like a geek" factor which is huge with this quilt when worn as a "serape". What's a SUL hiker to do... see the photos.
