The Li'l Tigers got smoked this afternoon by the first place team. Cameron, however, had the most beautiful bunt you'll ever see, and our kids got a double play, too....

Not true! Give'em time. It's still early in the season and they've got a great line-up this year. :-)

Today's the home opener, with rain in the forecast all day and for the next three days as well.

Spring baseball - gotta love it!

If the weather holds as it is now, they will play.

Home opener at the Cit.

Bobby Abreu hit the first official home run.

Jimenez of the Reds got first hit.

First pitch by Randy Wolf was a strike.

2-1 Reds after two.

It's 4-1 in the top of the ninth.

I wonder what spring training was all about.

Look guys, see this white sphere? It's called a baseball.

Pitchers throw the baseball.

Hitters hit the baseball, then run the bases.

Got it?

Sheesh!

At least the Flyers are playing well. So far, anyway.

It's official. Phillies christen their new baseball palace by not showing up!

Now the Future National League Champs of America are 1-6.

Giants home opener today. Barry's first AB: Walk. Yawn. Lots of that this year if the #5 hitter (Pierzinski today) hits into DPs like he did just now.... At least we got a run to tie the score....

Barry just hit a 3-run homer to put the G's up 5-4. That ties Mays for 660....

Hey, I love my tribe this year! Travis Hafner is leading the league in Hr's.

I played softball for the first time in a year last week.... 2 dingers over a 315' fence. It felt good. :)

Happy so far today, but it's only the 8th inning....

BTW, Barry got a bloop double, then scored on a single, so is 3 for 3 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to get our 9-year-olds to not fall asleep in the outfield during the game....

Apparently, the guy who dove into McCovey Cove and grabbed the ball just gave it to Barry, in exchange for a few baseballs, tickets, etc. Not everyone in the world is a completely greedy a-hole.

Let's hope the steroid scandal doesn't bring Barry down with it. This is the biggest mar on baseball, IMHO.

It'll be interesting to see how the whole steroid thing plays out. Bonds could be banned from the sport, and his records eventually removed. I know, I know, it'd be a long legal battle most likely, but wouldn't that be somethin'?
Artex

4/13/04

My theory: Barry told his trainer to never tell him what any "supplements" were. That way he could maintain plausible deniability, whether he took anything illegal or not. Another point: steroids (or even some legal substance) would help him hit it farther, turning some fly balls into homers; but would not help his ability to see the ball or to hit inside pitches - I've never seen anyone with a better eye or better ability to hit inside pitches than him, so you can't give steroids all the credit. I hope he didn't take them because 1) it's unfair to those not taking them, and 2) I fear for the players' lives, given the long term effects of that stuff....

Given the fact that pitchers have been avoiding throwing anything in the strike zone to Bonds, he's got to be the best junk ball hitter there ever was. The one he hit for 660 was way off the plate and he still nailed it.

Yeah Bowlder, I'd turn over a landmark home run ball for a few autographed balls and tickets. Why not? Sure you could make some money on it, but I'd rather the player have it on his mantle than some rich jerk buying it on speculation.

BTW, I have a ball I bought for $50 from a woman at work. Her great uncle had it. It's dated circa 1876 (I loosely researched the stitching pattern), and I got her to give me a copy of a photo of the guy. I'll never sell that for anything. My sons will have to figure out what to do with it when I'm gone.

I asked her why she was selling it, and she said she didn't want it and wanted the money instead. I told her it could be worth more, but she didn't want to be bothered selling it and wanted it to go to somebody who appreciated it. She sure got that right!

I have a ball with both Mays' and McCovey's autographs on it (given to me by a strange, rich old lady my dad somehow met who was a good friend of both #24 and #44, and would always have whichever umpiring crew was in town over to her mansion for a few drinks - umpires generally avoid being seen having a drink in public for obvious reasons). She invited my dad to bring me over to her place one time, so he did. She reached into this box and pulled out the ball and said, "Here, you can have this." My eyes were about as big as the ball! You won't see that ball on Ebay anytime soon....

661 for Barry last night, although the G's got all the firepower they needed from another old guy, Marquis Grissom, who hit two homers....

Go Astros!!
Looks like Roger still has it 13 2/3 scoreless inning before giving up his first run of the season.

Cards bullpen sux, Jason Simontacchi, 3 appearances, first batter has homered each time.

Sure do miss Wagner

Hah! That'll teach 'em to go to a game without me: M's 3, G's 0. Barry pinch hit with 2 aboard in the 7th and they walked him intentionally. He was left in the on-deck circle in the 9th....
