He talked about his son--don't know his name--and how he was courted by the White Sox and the Cubs. But I wasn't clear on whether he is playing for any team at the moment or not.

You must've met Gary Matthews, Sr. His son is Gary Matthews, Jr., thus the confusion.

Oh, then you were talking with GM Sr.

I think he spelled his name Garry.

Yep, that must be him. I suppose he would have liked it if I had fawned all over him, but I'm baseball illiterate so I did not at all. Although I do like to go to the games and eat hot dogs and drink cold beer.

GM Sr. played on the Cubs in late '70s and early '80s, about when I started being a Cub fan. During that time, several of the players had nicknames. IIRC, GM's was "The Sarge".

Okay, I got cornfusimicatered.

Gary Matthews with one R and Garry Maddox with two Rs.

Matthews was Sarge, and Maddox was the Secretary of Defense.

Spring Training
Ahhhh yes, time to oil up the old glove, rub the bats down with linseed oil, and put in the order for steroids.

The players are taking flaxseed oil now? Is that to replace steroids?

That's what Barry said he was told the stuff was that he was taking.

BowlderGal likes to hold up her arm, point to her bicep muscle and say, "Now that's a flaxseed oil arm!"

Anyhoo, I am ready for some baseball. I suspect the NL East this year will be pretty competitive. We won't have to listen to the Phillies players gripe about Larry Bowa. Maybe they'll play baseball instead.

That is adjusted to the fact that the pitchers and catchers report on Thursday this year. They usually report on a Friday. They moved it up a day to confuse me, and dammit, it worked!

MLB channel debuts on XMN Radio Tuesday.

That's their teaser. Larry Bowa will be an analyst on that channel too.

Also, they will be broadcasting at least some spring training games, and all the games of all the teams all season long.

Yankees baby!
Thank goodness!!!
I'm still in shock over the 3 games to none, up in game 4 in the 9th inning with 2 outs with Mariano on the mound. I would of bet the farm and ranch on that one, but to be honest I was like a Red Sox fan, I did not believe it was over til it was over.... I had a bad feeling after the 19-8 game.... Anyway YES a new season! Good luck for your Philly Geo...

I was toying with going down to catch a spring training game, but I have other plans for later in the year that took precedence.

Some year. My dad made it down twice before he passed on. He loved it.

As for the Fightins, this could be their year. But then again, we have heard that so many times it makes our ears cringe.

We are the perennial bridesmaids. Seems to be our lot in life. I think I can count all our championships in all sports on my hands and still have a finger left over to pick my nose.

Hopefully the managerial change will work for us. Otherwise, we have serious problems with what was supposed to be a contendah.

My cousin and her husband are building a dinner theatre in Arizona, right next door to one of the big spring training complexes (can't remember which one)! Hmmmm, guess we'll have to go down to catch a show (and a few games) next spring....

Bad News for the Red Sox
Before the last World Series, the previous WS that the Red Sox won was in 1918. The next year's Stanley Cup was cancelled on account of a flu epidemic. Then, 85 years go by, and the Sox win again, but OOPS! The Stanley Cup gets cancelled again, this time because of a greed epidemic.

2090 Sox, anyone?

Whoa, had to wait to get the report from Phillies camp in Clearwater.

Now that it's over, saw the press conference with Barry Bonds live. Man, Barry needs to be told not to get into a wizzing match with people who buy their ink by the barrel. He just bought a whole season of grief!
