“My favorite Cruds World Series was 1968, against the Tiggers. Now that was a great series - Gibson, Lolich, ... man, it couldn't get better than that!”

“Ozzie was a great ball player. I thought he was good hitter. Pitchers didn't like pitching against him, he rarely struck out and was always good in a clutch. When he got on base he was always good for a steal. He used to run circles around the Phils.”

“I was not fond of the Cruds even before 1964. You see, there was this guy named Stan Musial, and I hated him with a passion. I can still see him in his crouch at home plate in Shibe Park, Robin Roberts trying to nibble the corners without any success. I think he hit .809 against the Phillies over his career. He would have been a bum without the Fightins.

It took a long time to learn to like Stan the Man, even after his plaque went up in Cooperstown and he began entertaining people with his harmonica instead of his bat.

I came back from the Philippines in late August 1964, expecting to see a World Series in Philly. I went out to a game just after the collapse began, not realizing I was watching a team in its death throes.

All because Chico Ruiz stole home.

There was one bit of sweet revenge from 1964 though. The Yank-mes hired Johnny Keane away from the Cruds after the World Series. HaHa!”

In the NL, he is 18-4 with a 2.89 ERA and 210 strike outs. Next up to him is R. Oswalt, 18-10 with 3.59 ERA and 194 strike outs. Followed by C. Pavano, 17-8 with a 3.05 ERa and 136 strike outs.

I guess retirement suits him well.”

The Red Sox KILLED the Yankees to take 2 out of 3 games in their series. Mohahahahahahah!”

“OK, so the Gigantes won last night - no big surprise, with Schmidt pitching. But who woulda thunk that the Cubbies would lose with Maddux pitching?! So now we're tied for the wild card spot. Meanwhile in LA, the Pebbles gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th to hand the Bums a victory.

In other news, SF "closer" Dustin Hermanson was suspended for 3 games for hitting Jeff Kent with a pitch after about 14 of the Giants batters were hit by Astros pitchers in the previous 2 games. Usually in these cases they let the guy serve his suspension the following season.

The A's apparently have something better to do next week, as they've been doing their darndest to lose first place. They're tied now....”

“I woulda thought you'd get a bonus for hitting Kent....”

“Maddux, while still better than the average MLB pitcher, is just about spent. I don't see him pitching next year. He's earned his retirement.

The Cubs have an annoying habit of not beating teams they should be able to thrash easily.”

“Probably right about Maddux, although he has won 15 games this year.

Looking ahead, the Giants have 2 more against the Padres and 3 against the Bums, all on the road. The Cubs have 2 more against Cincinnati, then finish with 3 against the Braves. The 'stros have two more against St. Louis, then finish against that powerhouse, Colorado. It's all so confusing, but basically it looks like the Giants are toast.”

“Giants will win them all! Do not attempt to leave the cult now, Bowler. We will hunt you down and make you pay obeisance.”

“My brother and I came to a similar conclusion a few days ago, only reasoning that unless the Cubs completely fall apart, they've got the WC berth wrapped up, the reasoning being that since the Giants and Dodgers have so many more games together that its unlikely that either of them would finish with a better record than the Cubs if they don't win their division. But I'm not sure how well the Cubs will do against Atlanta, and Houston seems to be pulling back into the fray.

No one ever said it would be boring.”

“Well, Houston's toughest opponent is St. Louis, and Chicago's is Atlanta. Both of those teams have already clinched, so they're just kickin' back and letting their rookies play. On the other hand, LA knows they could still lose it at this point, so have to play at 100%.

In the NL, we've got two races going on, and four teams involved in them. I turn on the damn TV last night, and the only baseball game on is Atlanta-NY, and neither of those teams is involved. WTF?”
