The hardest part is keeping motivation up. A day or two off the routine can quickly become a week, and then longer so easily that it's scary.” 4:11:43 PM 10/10/07 “Make it a priority no matter what. Think about in your free time, anticipate it, yearn for it. On the days I wanna run the least (like today, it was cold and windy,I got 5hrs or crappy sleep was up at 430am) I make myself do it. I dont think about it at all. If you fall for the excuses your mind and body cook up you lose. Your will is the boss, its not a democracy. Even on a bad day the cobwebs shake out at 1/2-3/4 of a mile. Aint nothin to it but to do it.” 4:17:24 PM 10/10/07 “Thanks bro. I'm printing that off.” 4:22:46 PM 10/10/07 “meang - when I was trying to quit smoking, I used running as a motivator - a lot of days, i'd get home from work and just not want to go run at all. I found that if I registered for a 5k - even if it was two months away, it gave me a goal to reach for, which is all it took to get motivated to go out and run around the neighborhood. Still works for me now almost 4 years later. Sign up for some little 5k race in your area and you suddenly have a goal and a deadline - just set your race goal realistically - your only racing against yourself. My first 5k, my goal was to finish - period. :) And birch is right to - just start - Once you get going, it feeds itself.” 11:31:16 AM 10/11/07 “Congrats on the milestone birch!” 11:31:38 AM 10/11/07 “Nice going, birch!! Your best distance running may still be ahead of you. I ran my 10-mile PR (around 6:25 pace) at age 38, and my marathon PR (around 7:20 pace) at age 43.” 11:45:22 AM 10/11/07 “Hey y'all...glad to see you are keeping my thread going, lol... I've got up to 4 miles a month ago or so, that is my "normal" run now. I do it two or three times a week, plus some shorter runs, some cycling (not recently though) and a couple miles a day of walking, most days. I am thinking about signing up for a 10 mile trail run in two weeks. It would obviously be, go slow, walk the uphills, and just enjoy being in the woods. And plan on not being able to walk the next day, lol. Congrats to all who are reading this thread, keep up the good work, you are so smart to be taking care of your bodies. P.S. Birch--I don't have time to go find it and post on it but THANK YOU (and everyone) for helping Ruby. I wanted to be there but realized it was a 12 hour drive. That just wasn't happening. But thank you, sincerely.” 12:26:11 PM 10/11/07 “Ugh, domt eat two plates of spag and meatballs with garli bread and salad and a glass of wine before running 5 miles. Vurps the whole time yuck-o-riffic.” 5:19:34 PM 10/14/07 “i've been trying to do some running lately. i'd like to work up to doing a half-marathon. maybe the one in Sedona, Arizona in early Feb. next year.” 10:01:25 PM 10/20/07 Ryan Shay Dies During Olympic Marathon Trials “wow, this really sucks ... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,307896,00.html Shay was a favorite going into the 2004 trials but was hampered by a hamstring strain and finished 23rd. He was third at this year's U.S. 25K championships. His wife, Alicia, also is a professional distance runner. They married in July.” 9:34:17 AM 11/03/07 “Its a shame about Shay... Had an amazing 7 miler today 53:34, 7:40 per mile. I was hoping to finish the 7.8 course but was too whipped. An easy 4 or five in the am sunday and some rest monday. I dont think I ever recall running on Nov 3rd with nothing but shorts shoes and a smile. Its 55 and sunny, absolutely beautiful oustide...” 12:08:10 PM 11/03/07 “weather has been good for running these last few weeks so i am glad to hear you are getting such good times. i have been slowing down but my knee shows no sign of pain so i am happy. i am back to the climbing gym 4x per week.... totally obsessed.” 8:38:04 PM 11/03/07 “Trying to get back in the groove of a regular routine. Went out last night - in the dark, with my glowy vest :) - my son said I looked like a power ranger, LOL I like running in the cold air, but my lungs felt all congested this am, they've cleared now. I think it was a temp reaction to cool night air. It was about 40 degrees out. Great run though - peaceful in the dark.” 11:31:24 AM 11/06/07 “when it's cold like that i can run further and stronger for sure. i get into a pattern where i feel like i could run forever. every stride feels strong... perfect. it's outstanding.” 2:03:31 PM 11/06/07 “I fell off the hore big time, have not run for months. Gotta start back up soon for annual pumpkin plod on thanksgiving. Jim, got to the trip page and look for the BFT dayhike trip. Sounds interesting to you?” 2:11:04 PM 11/06/07 “I haven't ran since I finished the knobstone a few weeks ago. I was really sore for about a week after, then plans and laziness got in the way. I haven't exercised at all for that matter since then. Good lord. I gotta get on the stationary bike tonight. I feel lethargic.” 2:33:56 PM 11/06/07 “i get into a pattern where i feel like i could run forever. every stride feels strong that's it! Once my body got good and warmed up, it was almost magical. Then came the BIG hill at the end of my route. LOL” 2:34:29 PM 11/06/07 “looked the trip over mr knee. looks like a lot of fun but not something i would be interested in. thanks!” 2:55:45 PM 11/06/07 “Cold weather runnings rocks for sure, sounds like folks are slacking...get on it!!b MG and WK this means you!” 3:29:44 PM 11/06/07 “Turkey Trot coming up in a couple weeks on Thanksgiving. This is the annual cross country "alumni" race that includes my high school, the other high schools from my home town, and the community college there, too. It's fun and, if you want, remarkably competitive. Former Olympian Matt Giusto has run it a couple of times, and there are always at least a few current college runners. It's a nice opportunity to see my old coach, who seemed old when he was coaching us, but still looks the same! I'm healthy and in decent aerobic shape, so I went out yesterday and, during my 3.5 mile run, ran 2 miles (which are part of a well-known road course) as hard as I could. I didn't look at the watch till after, and thought I completely flailed on the 2nd mile. I hit 6:38 on the first one and 7:07 on the 2nd - not too bad! Seems like a sub-7 pace for the 3-mile T. Trot is not totally out of the question. Just gotta make sure B-Son doesn't beat me....” 4:10:07 PM 11/06/07 “Go powltryman go, sub 7's?!?! I get side aches thinking about that speed. I hope you wear a supportive bra :), ground the boy if he wins.” 5:25:04 PM 11/06/07 “Sub 7!! {bowing down} If the boy starts to pass - trip him. ;)” 9:32:13 AM 11/07/07 “Yesterday I jogged over to a park called the Amphitheater of Roses or something. It's set in a steep bowl and has lots of paths and trails. I did 6 sprints from the bottom to the top, alternating between a series of paths that switchback up and a route that climbs mostly by stairs. Each route takes around a minute and a half or so to cover. Wow, a tough workout, but a really nice setting. There were some guys from a home construction crew cleaning up on the street where the park tops out. I'm sure they thought I was nuts, popping up out of the park every few minutes gasping like I was about to expire (which I was, of course). On a side note, it was reported today that there was a mountain lion sighting near where the upcoming Turkey Trot is held - that oughtta make me run faster! http://www.kcbs.com/Residents-Notified-of-Mountain-Lion-Sightings/1189604 last edited: 11/08/07 8:48:16 AM” 8:46:14 AM 11/08/07 “i have one of those polar hrm units that has the foot pod for also measuring distance/pace. of course it's always been great as a hrm but i was always a bit unsure about the distance. i have a run that i do about once a month i swear is 6 miles but when i measure it with the foot pod it measures at 5.8 miles. well today i got a little curious about this and traced out my route on google map using their distance tools (see "my maps" to turn this on). anyway, the route turns out to be 5.796 miles... easily 5.8 given the margin of error for my measurement with the distance tool -and- the measurement accuracy of the foot pod. basically the thing was spot-on. i am pretty strongly endorsing the unit after this experience. funny, i have had this unit for like two years now and never though to double-check it. i calibrated it on the treadmill but was always unsure this was the right approach to calibration of the unit (impact on the treadmill will have a different profile than impact on the ground outside). i guess i was wrong and it all works really, really well. last edited: 11/09/07 10:18:33 AM” 10:18:31 AM 11/09/07 “i've never used a hrm, but i like the idea of an accurate distance measure.” 1:12:20 PM 11/09/07 “I like accurate distance measurement and using an HRM. For measurement, I will use mapping tools, like Google Earth, but sometimes I will run with my GPS or ride my bike with the GPS. More importantly, I like to run a familiar set of courses (which all have names I've created for them) and compare times ("Hey, I ran the 'Piedmont Lowlands' run 2 minutes faster today!"). I use the HRM to do one of three things: 1. Stay in a high-ish zone for doing tempo runs of 15-30 minutes when training for road racing. 2. Ensure that my long distance runs are at a sufficiently low HR. 3. Compare bike rides to equivalent effort for run distances. For example, if I go out on a 2-hour bike ride with an average HR of 130, it's probably equivalent to a 1-hour run (or something like that).” 1:24:48 PM 11/09/07 “The greatest toy ever :D I've checked mine several times, both with google maps and against my bike computer and it's been pretty much right on every time.” 2:32:58 AM 11/10/07 “someones up early” 2:39:23 AM 11/10/07 “how is it on batteries upliver?” 8:21:41 AM 11/10/07 “dub: sarge is only proposing people boycott the boycott for two weeks. then his boycott of the boycott will be over. it's not forever! surely you can last two weeks... you are a married man now aren't you? so you should know the dynamics here...” 8:26:41 AM 11/10/07 “lmao!” 10:27:13 AM 11/10/07 “It has a built in Lithium Ion battery that lasts around 10-12 hrs on a charge....That's the one thing I wish they would change...it would be nice if it had a removable battery.” 11:09:39 AM 11/11/07 “but you can recharge it and that's key. i can see that thing cranking through disposable watch batteries like crazy... i can see how it would be nice to have an option to use disposables on the trail, however. oh well.” 7:11:45 PM 11/11/07 “I'd buy one of those forerunners too if they would just build one with a removable battery. I use the foretrex 101 for my hiking and backpacking because I can replace the batteries if I'm out longer than 10 to 12 hours.” 1:02:36 PM 11/12/07 “foretrex... isn't that a brand of ribbed condom?” 5:19:01 PM 11/12/07 “ribbed for her pleasure?” 5:25:41 PM 11/12/07 “lol wow talk about thread denigration! One of my projects for this winter is figuring out a way to charge mine with some AA batteries” 6:30:35 PM 11/12/07 “So, anyone doing a race over the holidays? I'm doing my first 10K on Thanksgiving day here in San Diego. Its kinda funny that it will be my first, since I have been running for around 15 years now!” 9:09:18 AM 11/13/07 “Good deal embear. My two kids and I are doing a turkey trot. I told them we'd do it TOGETHER - no one goes faster than the slowest of us three. :) It'll be a new tradition - I'm looking forward to it.” 10:23:15 AM 11/13/07 “Roam, I used to do that with my family on turkey day every year in Nashville. Its a great way to start the day with your family! btw, you have both kids living with you now?” 8:49:57 AM 11/14/07 “yep, as it should be.” 9:23:37 AM 11/14/07 “Ran the annual "Turkey Trot" on Thanksgiving. Not sure how many times I've run this thing, maybe about a dozen. It's an awesome course, one of the courses we would run in high school. The race is sort of a student-alumni race that is for the four high schools and community college in the city where I grew up. My old coach was there, as usual - he's still coaching the team. I told him, "Hey Coach, I don't want to make you feel any older than you already feel, but this next spring will mark 30 years since I came out for the track team." Ouch. Here is the course - best viewed using the terrain feature, tilting the view and moving around. You can see the starting line in the aerial, as well as the finish chute. http://home.alamedanet.net/~boyesbeene/boyesbeene/images/crystal.kmz The trick with this course is to not go too fast on the steep downhill at the beginning. Then you have to come back up the same hill at about the 1 mile point. Then you have some twists and turns and ups and downs before hitting Hernia Hill. Then you're tricked into thinking you're almost done, except for that 1,000 yards you have left! If that isn't enough, you get to try to sprint to the finish uphill. This year, the course record-holder, former Olympian Matt Giusto showed up. His record for the 2.95-mile course is 14:14. I was excited to match his record time. Um, sure, it was at the 2 mile point, but who's counting.... I finished at 21:28, maybe my 3rd or 4th worst time ever, but it was 15 seconds faster than last year. Heck, I'm almost 46 years old; what do you expect?!” 8:38:03 AM 11/26/07 “Cool, Bowlder! The fact that you got out there and are still doing the race is great! I ran my first 10k on Thanksgiving. It was fun, but I really pushed myself and was exhausted for the rest of the day, and I had to cook! I think that will be the first of many now though. My time wasnt too bad (for me), finshing at 1:03. But i really want to get it under an hour.” 9:11:30 AM 11/27/07 “Went for a longish (about 8 miles) run after work yesterday, mostly on some nice paths along and near the bay here in town. I planned to take it slow - 8:30 pace or so. I had been running for about 15 minutes or so, when I heard footsteps, then caught a glimpse of someone in the corner of my eye. Grrrrr. Some young buck was out for a run, saw me, and probably thought, "Hah. Look at that old guy. I'll make mince meat outta him." So I started picking it up, carefully maintaining my form so that it didn't look like I was speeding up. I'm really good at doing that. A minute went by. Then another, and another. Pretty soon I was clicking along at around 7:00 pace, still as smooth as my 8+ pace before. The footsteps weren't as loud any more. I kept the hammer down, minute after minute. Finally, around 10-12 minutes after the initial challenge, I reached the point where I veered off the path I was on, onto a different path. I snuck a look over my shoulder after turning off. No one there. Any more. Heh, heh, heh.....” 2:19:40 PM 12/04/07 fun run stuff 5:25:35 PM 12/28/07 “New Year and New Shoes! Signed up for my first race of the year to. The Oatmeal Festival 5k in Layfayette CO on Jan 12!” 11:53:54 AM 1/03/08 “Good deal Roam! So far, I have a St Pattys day 5K and a 10K Mud Run planned for this year. Hopefully I can squeeze a few more in there!” 3:19:35 PM 1/03/08 “One of my new year's resolutions is to run some races this year. I only ran 655 miles in '07, although I did a fair amount of biking (1400 miles) and backpacking (about 150 miles). How many miles did you all log last year?” 7:57:48 PM 1/03/08 “Running races is too expensive, but I'm gonna try and get a few races in this year since I'm making some money.” 9:27:38 PM 1/03/08 “We have a great and cheap series here every month, called the Fourth Sunday runs. You can pick 5k, 10k, or 15k, get some decent competition, a precisely measured course, and good folks running things. It costs 4 bucks.” 7:28:24 AM 1/04/08 Jump to Page << prev
