I am now torturing my 3 year old on a tri-weekly basis, (I shudder to think of what her dad and gramma are doing to her too). Poor kid has to sit in the jogging stroller more than any other kid I've ever met. There's a huge difference running along pushing about foty-five pounds outside, with hills. Should be good training.” 8:00:27 AM 5/20/04 Here's a cool running story!! “from our paper today... Runner bitten by bear in Glacier National Park Associated Press WEST GLACIER (AP) - A jogger was bitten by a bear in Glacier National Park's first reported bear-related injury of the year, officials said Tuesday. A park statement said a man was running early Sunday when he came up on what he thought was a grizzly bear. Gary Smith told officials he fell. Smith said the bear bit his shoe, then left after Smith sprayed the animal. Smith said he got away with a scratch and a puncture on his shin. He was probably wondering why no one wanted to be the lead runner in that 5K!” 8:45:04 AM 5/20/04 “That would be great to add to your running injury list: plantar fasciatis shin splints runner's knee bear bite” 8:46:35 AM 5/20/04 “Any witnesses? The guy probably tripped over his own feet and made up the story to avoid em-bear-assment....” 9:04:11 AM 5/20/04 “Oh sure, the old "a bear bit me" excuse!” 9:16:25 AM 5/20/04 “I use that one all the time. =) Those bears sure are a pain in the @ss. A great reason to get rid of the old running shoes: I took off for my 6 mile run this morning with one nice new NB trail runner and one old, almost the same color as the new one, only kept around for mowing the grass, NB trail runner. I didn't relize it until I was two miles in, lol. My right knee hurts now. Had a great time though, right around 55 minutes. (at least great for me)” 12:08:17 PM 5/20/04 “Dagnabit, this sitting around during the "taper" is driving me nuts. I wanna RUN! 4 more days to the marathon...” 8:38:31 AM 5/25/04 “I always tapered with 8mi., 6,4,3,3,2 during the week of the race. Also, do strides and stretching. If you just sit, you'll feel sluggish.” 9:08:02 AM 5/25/04 “here are my new running shoes! i haven't actually worn them to run in yet, b/c i have my friend and i don't run then. LOL! you're welcome for sharing. they're very comfy for walking, though, so far.” 9:44:05 AM 5/25/04 “Nice ones, lyra! I'm sure they make you look fast--that's the most important feature, of course.” 9:50:26 AM 5/25/04 “eggzactly! :-)” 9:53:38 AM 5/25/04 “Nice shoes, lyra! Those oughtta last, oh, about 7 or 8 years, huh? I have a very sore inner thigh muscle (no massage offers please) from lots of crouching down working on the front yard sprinkler system. Will try to run tonight, though. 10k race on Monday - I'll be aiming for sub-42, which would get me a qualifying time to start near the front in Bay to Breakers next year.” 10:27:55 AM 5/25/04 “HA! not funny. ;-D good luck at the race! how about wearing that hot sports bra? that would distract all the other racers!” 10:37:56 AM 5/25/04 “Great idea! Only problem is that most of the other racers will be ahead of me within the first few seconds of the race, so they won't see me....” 11:00:51 AM 5/25/04 lyra “we need you modeling them. Put them on go outside and have someone take your pic. Don't let tarpy do it or he will have to make you pose 50 times just to get the right shot” 11:30:13 AM 5/25/04 “LeSubtil enjoy the taper, you'll appreciatte it at mile 20. Cant wait to hear the report. I'll be outta state but will try to check in if possible.” 6:32:03 PM 5/25/04 “The Dunadan is back home and in the saddle again. Ran a marathon in Boston, but it took me three days to do it. Nine miles twice, and seven once. There are a ton of runners in that town, I'm here to tell you. Ran my flat route last night, and looking forward to putting in some ten-plus runs. I'm running an 8K on Memorial Day for the Brain Injury Association in Kansas City. I don't much like the 8K. It ain't a 5K for sure, and it's not a 10K. Who came up with this distance? Anyway, charge on to victory everyone. (BTW, cute shoes Lyra.)” 8:32:44 AM 5/26/04 “I think the 8K was a compromise between a 5K and a 10K. But it's not a bad distance; 4.97 miles, so it's basically a 5 miler. You're right about Boston, Dunadan, the runners are everywhere- mostly along the Charles River. That's a great run along the river with all the crews rowing by with the city in the background.” 8:37:21 AM 5/26/04 “I ran 4.75 yesterday . . .and it sucked the juice out of me for my morning ride! I had nothing. NOTHING> THese guys dropped me repeatedly. One of them finally suggested a two rope. And it didn't get better only worse. Crappy ride. OH well. I can't give up my runs at lunch just cause I am riding in the morning. I'll have to pay more attention to recovery foods and sleep!” 8:46:43 AM 5/26/04 “Well, my inner thigh soreness is mostly gone. Went out and ran an easy 4-miler last night - it didn't seem like the specific muscle that was sorest was a major running muscle, so it wasn't too bad. Then, it feels almost normal this morning. So it'll be the "Hills of Severe Pain" 10k loop tonight (not too fast, though), then a little easy track work tomorrow (just a few 800s at my target opening pace for the 10k to get a feel for it), followed by a couple of easy runs on Friday and Saturday.” 10:25:07 AM 5/26/04 “At least another week before the chiropractor says I can start running again. :-(” 2:50:50 PM 5/26/04 “Hang in there, tb! Do what the chiro says! Turn that frown upside down! :-)” 3:06:44 PM 5/26/04 “I was ticked off about some stupid political stuff in Little League that affects a friend of mine, so I cranked through the 10k Hills of Severe Pain in 45 minutes after work today. Felt good, though....” 10:06:28 PM 5/26/04 my first marathon is in 2 days “My left knee has been sore for the last week, and it's scaring the crap out of me, with two days to go now... The weather forecast looks good, partly cloudy and 45 at the start time, warming to 57 by noon. Perfect. I've been having fun "carbo loading" eating huge bowls of linguine and stacks of buckwheat pancakes plus at least a pound of asparagus a day. I'm trying to force myself to drink 3 liters of water every day this week. It's going to be a beautiful run, in the morning, along the Grand Traverse bay. My wife is running her first 10 K, and she's super nervous too. Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support. It's meant a lot to me. I'm going to have a blast!” 8:51:13 AM 5/27/04 “Go, le Subtil!!! You'll have a blast - sounds like you're definitely ready. Don't worry about your knee now. If it becomes a problem during the race, just drop out and do another marathon when it gets better.” 10:19:39 AM 5/27/04 “reporting for duty bowlderman :) ok I jogged 2 blocks. hey its a huge deal for me. need to get better sneakers and a sports bra OUCH it started off as a power walk, then i jogged for one block then power walk then jog another block. will try to add another block tomorrow” 3:36:04 PM 5/27/04 “Welcome, mapes!!!! Everyone has to start somewhere - actually, starting by powerwalking and mixing in a couple blocks of slow jogging is probably the best way to get started. You can ask some of the women runners on the thread here about the sports bra thing, or look back a few days on this thread for the photo of me wearing one....” 3:49:22 PM 5/27/04 “OK, you'd have to go back to 5/14 to see it....” 3:51:00 PM 5/27/04 “holy cow, nice legs baby! thanks for the encouragment” 3:53:32 PM 5/27/04 “Careful, m, lex will get jealous (hey, I wonder if he does any running....)....” 3:58:24 PM 5/27/04 “oh yes, with a bod like his, he has to.” 4:00:20 PM 5/27/04 “Oh, yeah, of course, we runners and our bods....” 4:01:03 PM 5/27/04 “Hey Mapes, getting a good sports bra is like getting new sneakers with battery power! Less bounce the smoother the run, lol. Consider it an investment. If you run slow, like 12-10 min miles, you burn loads of fat. (And it's easier) I ran six today with two dog drive. It took me 49 minutes!!! Those dogs just about yanked my left arm outta the socket and they drank all my water, the dirty rotten beasts. It is my fastest time ever though. =) Next time, I carry two water bottles.” 11:04:33 PM 5/27/04 “OMG I DID IT!!! I jogged (more like trotted) 1 full mile. i took it real slow, started walking super fast, then kicked it up a notch and started jogging slow. blown away by the fact that I did that. felt great! sure wish I had a shower at work... got my girls a good sprots bra, they like it! now I need to take care of my feet. need better sneakers. queastion, i stretch before I run, but i am still getting sore on my legs. its in the front between my knee and feet (i forgot what its called) it feels like its being pulled. is this normal?” 8:53:00 AM 5/28/04 “...and no one was chasing you? Way to go! It's normal--you'll have lot's of "adjustments" as you begin running.” 8:56:19 AM 5/28/04 “good for you and your girls, Maple! :-D” 8:56:44 AM 5/28/04 “LOL no one was chasing me. i do feel little things while I run. I have my day pack, i need it. its filled with shoes, clothing, crap. i was thinking of getting those hand weights. any suggestions?” 8:57:40 AM 5/28/04 “GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR MARATHON LESUBTIL!!!!!!!” 9:25:55 AM 5/28/04 “Be careful of the pain in your shins - you probably need to get a new pair of shoes. Best is to go to a running shop that is actually run by runners - they can help you find a shoe that really fits you. Pain gone. BTW, congrats on running a whole mile - woo hoo!” 9:58:36 AM 5/28/04 “thank you :) LOL shin...i could not think of what the heck it was caleed.” 10:06:08 AM 5/28/04 “If you are just getting into running, it is common to have the shin pains. As aero said, you will also probably develop pains elsewhere. Applying ice to what hurts after you run will help. Stretching before running is ok, but more important is to stretch after you have finished. Have fun!” 10:29:45 AM 5/28/04 “thanks hubcap. can you leaad me to a place where I can see good stretches? other then the obvious ones i am already doing.” 10:40:06 AM 5/28/04 “Hey Maple, Your jog to work, would that be where you saw all the miliary hotties? I ran my first full mile (in years) last week. Took me 10 minutes. I felt so proud of myself. Then a couple days later lsst weekend I did a 22 mile hike and destroyed my feet and have had to take all this week to recover. I'm going to go out again tomorrow morning and go for the mile slow jog again. I'd like to build up speed, stamina and strength to the point where I could actually do a 5K. Then I could be cool like all you awesome runners here.” 10:44:01 AM 5/28/04 “Ideally, if you want to stretch before your "workout," you would want to warm your muscles up somewhat before stretching them. In your case, 'leaf, you could stretch after you walk for a bit and before you start the jogging. Also, stretching after the run is good. Most importantly, do not bounce during stretching! I usually count to 10 or 15 during each stretch - many people recommend even longer. Of course, you will also fine reputable experts who insist that stretching is at least overrated and possibly completely unnecessary. Go figure....” 10:47:02 AM 5/28/04 “My times have increased dramatically since I incorpoarted the "armed robbery" phase of my training.” 10:48:14 AM 5/28/04 10:58:03 AM 5/28/04 “wow you did a mile in 10 miles? I did it in 20 LOL thanks for the advice bowlderdash! Yes Ruby, thats were I saw all the hotties. I work on the Hudson and thats where they are all parked AKA docked. so I get to see them arrive and leave. i think I like to see them leave a little bit more *wink wink*” 11:16:37 AM 5/28/04 “Oh, I see. Maple just wants to get into running because of the hot guys with nice tushes. OK, then I have to show you the Adidas ad from a couple years back (although I blacked out the naughty parts): ”11:33:07 AM 5/28/04 Jump to Page << prev
