Help!! Of any of you that have a digital camera... have you ever inadvertently deleted pics from the flashcard (or whatever it's called) before downloading them to your computer. And, if so, is there any secret bat cave way to get those back. There's some pics that were on that card that we desperately need...

I hate to say it, but your pics are probably gone for good. :-(

Hasta Lasania. To the best of my knowledge they are gone. I was looking into what "format" meant one time and wa la, I had empty flashcard.

But for your sake I hope there is a saftey net. Perhaps you should email the company and ask?

Yeah. We'll be calling the 800# on Monday. But we kinda needed them before Monday, if possible.

Appreciate the responses. Thanks!

I don't know how this works, but you can try Photo Rescue.

Try this link. This is a search for "lost" on the storage and media forum from Digital Preview. Or you can visit the site, go the storage and media forum, and post a question. Be sure to include the type of camera and memory card you are using.

Good luck!

I must have a faulty Y chromosome. I always read the instructions first.

Maybe it's from all those years of being told to RTFM when I had a question...

and just how do we know you actually lost those pics? :P

it depends on a few things....
if the camera actually deleted them instead of the DOS method of altering the file name then no.

if it just played with the name and you didnt take any pics afterward there is a way (maybe)..
the camera itself wont be able to retrieve them as it wont have the software to do it but if you have access to a media reader and can locate the right software that can read the raw data from the card then maybe....

you cant just deleet pics inadvertently, or you gotta be pretty dumb to not read what your doing

and like getting data back from a reformatted floppy...you gotta be in the FBi and have their equip to do it.

DOM - "media reader" "raw data"... sounds promising. But, unfortunatley, I don't know what all that means. :-)

Damn, that sucks. I wasn't overly optimistic but you never know.

Strat - what cam are you using, and what format? By format, I mean file type; jpg, tif, raw. Most people shoot jpg and when you download the pics to your computer, they should go into a folder.

At that point you can bring your pics into your graphics program (Photo Suite for you), and do any tweaking / resizing if needed. If you do, make sure to save your images as jpg's.

Even if you don't even bother with the graphics program, you should be able to email the pics. Give us some details of the prob and we'll get you fixed up.

i dont think there's any comercially available way to retrive deleted pictures off a card, gotta just pay attention to what your doing when you use a camera, just like you cant pop the back of a film camera before the roll of film is done

click "save as" in photosuite, and change the file type to ".jpg" or ".jpeg", should be right below where the filename is typed in, if not, just put ".jpg" after the filename

thanks guys.....
ok...here's where i stand. the camera we have is a samsung digimax 200, 2.1 megapixels. i first d/l the pics of the camera, only i messed up...kinda...cause in addition to the photo suite, they sent another photo processing CD and i put the pics on there. i then realized that it's some kinda wal-mart thing, for sending the digital pics to walmart in case you wan't them printed. well, i made albums on there, everything seemed fine. but now when i trry to open the "ablum" files, it says unsupported file type, or cannot find file. i saved them as jpeg....so i was just gonna start over, and load them onto photo suite, ,but now i cant even get the computer to find the camera! i had to install a new USB port, which obviously worked, cause i got the pics on there once.

any ideas?

Hmmm, there has to be someone here who is familiar with that setup. I'm used to taking the memory card out of the camera, inserting it into a card reader, and then dl the pics to my pc. I'm not familiar with a camera to pc direct hookup.

Did you try the old faithful pc re-boot? Or perhaps you have to reinstall the software that came with the cam?

Come on pc and digi geeks, help this guy out!

lets see....
usb under windows is pretty much a hit/miss affair, I havent messed with it enough to know what tools are availible to help with your problem. (linux has a very nice usb-view program :) Be carefull you dont reinstall to many times, install still has a nasty habit of ruining registries.

tara,
media reader: this is a little dude about the size of a mouse that will take memory cards or sticks and other storage mediums depending on the maker. Usually these are found near the camera area.(usb device)

raw data: In order to store information on most media it is broken into fixed length blocks and stored as block x, block y ,block z. then an entry is made in the directory saying file picture.jpg = blocks x,y,z. Retrival can occur in either a raw or cooked mode. Raw means to retrieve with no processing by software so rather then grab the file by picture.jpg it is obtained as block x , block y , block z. There are several advantages to this method as each block can be retrieved many times and averaged together to reconstruct missing data. You can also custom tailor the device to get the best retrieval for each individual block.

Tarabull...

Get a card reader

You can get a six in one reader for $49 at Sandisk.com.

This way, you can view/edit photos
with NO need to download via camera software. In fact, you do not even need to install camera software.

You can pick up Paint Shop Pro 7
for about $80 to edit the photos
(crop,lighten, etc).

Finally, go to a digital camera store...they can explain/demo all of above to you :)

Good luck!

I use both the Nikon Coolpix 880 (compact flash) and Olympus D-100 (smart media) and download both directly to computer via USB hookup.

Arkansas man of many names (including those of women)... Have your shots been deleted yet from whichever type of film card you use?

If not, can't you just download them again? And save them to where you need them this time? And if perchance it asks you to replace those first shots, say "yes."
