The crabs weren't bad. We sung together, me and my crab ensemble. Mostly James Taylor covers, which are really amplified by a crab choir all singing in key

well, I scored an awesome goal in the process of getting hurt, so the injury was somewhat worth it. Got tripped cutting across the front of the net (I think it was the goalie but I don't really know, there was a dude on my back too) and tucked the puck in while midair... the landing was the part I had trouble with - landed head/shoulder first real awkwardly. We'll see. Of to the doc's now!

My chiropractor is a sadist! Get better Peps! Great story on getting hurt. When my Mom broke her leg tripping over a curb, she was embarrassed to tell anyone. I told her straight lie and say you broke checking someone hard into the boards!

still trying to figure out what's up with my legs

we thought it might be stress fractures, but it's not - so now we're going to test in the next few weeks for chronic compartment syndrome

If it's that, no more running - no marathon this year.

actually, even if it's not that - it's too late to continue to train for the marathon anyways

is this related to your knee issue?

Who? Me or NGB?

I had knee surgery like 3 years ago or so and it seems for the most part to be fine. The screw in there is a pain sometimes when running, but not too bad. This issue is independent of the knee issue.

If it's compartment syndrome, that happens when the muscle pumps up too big for the "static" sheath around the calf. The muscle can't expand anymore and constricts vessels, etc.. inside. Not sure why it never happened before. I had been doing a lot of lower body work lifting before taking on the running, but I don't think that would have affected that. I suppose it's possible. Hopefully the tests will reveal something.

Either way - looks like instead of marathoning it'll be a year of "pumping up" - which is fine. I enjoy that more anyways. Gotta do something though because sitting around waiting for tests to come back is driving me nuts and I'm turning into a fatass VERY quickly.

Thanks for the concern.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chronic-exertional-compartment-syndrome/DS00789/DSECTION=tests-and-diagnosis

This test, often called compartment pressure measurement, is the gold standard for diagnosing chronic exertional compartment syndrome. Because it's an invasive test, involving insertion of needles into your muscles, and can be mildly painful, compartment pressure measurement usually isn't performed unless your medical history and other tests strongly suggest you may have this condition.

Measurement of compartment pressures can be done in a clinic by someone trained in the procedure, such as an orthopedic surgeon. There are several ways to measure compartment pressure. The method becoming most popular uses a hand-held portable needle device that includes a pressure scale. You don't need any special preparation for the procedure. Your doctor will thoroughly clean the skin around the areas to be tested and inject a local anesthetic to help control the pain. A needle is then inserted through the skin and into the muscle of each compartment to be tested.

A series of three measurements is usually taken on each compartment. The first is taken when you're at rest, the second immediately after exercising — such as on a treadmill in the clinic — and the third several minutes after exercising. Measurements that are abnormally high lead to a diagnosis of chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

by the way - there is a similar yet different condition called "acute compartment syndrome". You do NOT want to use google images on that bad boy if you have a weak stomach.

Thanks for the warning!!...so are you in pain?
divinity

no. One sign of compartment syndrome (the chronic version) is that you really only experience pain during the event, which is perpetrated by running (for example). During a run (say maybe 2 miles) your muscles pump up to the point of causing the condition to expose itself. It's fairly rare, but I do know somebody else who had it. She had a surgery for it, and I think it mildly helped. I don't foresee having surgery for this. I'd rather just focus on other interests besides long distance running.

If you're an athlete or trainer and are interested in reading about it, this is pretty good: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chronic-exertional-compartment-syndrome/DS00789

looks like compartment syndrome was brought on by plantar fasciitis so we're fixing the source problem which should hopefully take care of the rest - if you've never had plantar fasciitis, don't.

try stretching and rolling your plantar fascia on a tennis or golf ball to stretch it out. Go find a Neuromuscular therapist and s/he should be able to cure you in one or two sessions.

I went Friday to a pair of doctors and an excellent physical therapist that treat the Flyers and a local farm team. They gave me a full regimine and it's working already. They may analyze my gait if things don't go to normal (hope so, that'll be cool) but probably there wont be a need.

Plantar fascitis and carpal tunnel syndrome are the pits. The condition is common with athletes, but usually responds well to surgery. Good luck,

3rd day, the swelling is down and the discoloration is fading. pain is still there, but i can deal with it. i've stayed off of it. using the old crutches and arnica gel. so how much longer? a week? two weeks? forced inactivity sucks. i want to go and walk my doggie! i did get my son to drive us to the dog park yesterday and turbo liked that.

come on people, tell me how long your sprained ankles took to heal. the worst one i ever had took nine months to heal. i'm thinking this one isn't as bad, but i don't want to get on it too soon. i did that before and now i wonder if that was why it took forever to heal, or was it just a really bad sprain? i didn't have much choice then though, i had to go to work and my job was on my feet.

Sometimes people sprain their ankles w/out even knowing it. When I got an mri for tendinitis, I found out I'd had multiple sprains. Nothing ever slowed me down though.

I'm curious if the Dr diagnosed a sprain or you did Dizzy? Nine months for a sprain is not right. There was either something else going on (like tendinitis, cause even broken bones don't take that long to heal), or you aren't right girlfriend.

BTW, your ankle looks horrible. Rest, Ice Compression and Elevation. Arnica is good for bruising. You have a whole lot of swelling. I'd go see a doctor if it were my ankle. I hope it gets better quickly and that it isn't as painful as it looks.

the doctor did diagnose that really bad sprain. haven't seen anyone for this one. i hate going to the doctor, don't want anyone to think i am a hypochondriac. not even me. i didn't go last week for chest pain even though i was crying with it and my husband begged me to allow him to 911. good thing too, cause it was only heartburn. you see my mom is one of those and i have to watch for the tendency.

anyways, you would be surprised, i took that pic in the morning when the swelling was way down, i think it looks great comparatively. i have had much better bruising than that. i'm doing the rest pretty much all the time. still have to cook, and someone had to take turbo out to pee, me. i elevate it part of the time. and yes, i am using arnica. it's going to be fine, i am just an impatient btch and i want to know when!

Nice foot, by the the way. You don't have those ugly, deformed toes, that most older women have. Judging by your foot I would guess you're not older than...22, or so. You're in your early 20ies, aren't you?

Patience Grasshopper...there are a lot of fluids there. Ice the first 24 then heat after. Have you soaked it in a warm epsom salt solution? Cheap old time homeopathic treatment that works.

The more you are up walking around the longer it is going to take because you are working the injured tissue. And standing will make fluids settle in your foot. You should stay off your feet AMAP and elevate that foot...it doesn't have to be higher than you, just resting straight out while in a chair or recliner.

You are in the heat, rest, elevation mode now. Warm Epsom salt soaks work wonders.

BTW I have never had a sprained ankle either.
