Not working so far, but I'm not done trying yet....” 1:54:02 PM 5/21/03 “On my travels, stricken— my dreams over the dry land go on roving. Matsuo Basho (1644–1694)” 8:45:53 PM 5/24/03 “Did Corp. Nasty get attacked by a broom again? --Treebeard” 8:47:09 PM 5/24/03 “Did it vibrate?” 8:49:36 PM 5/24/03 “No, it just went straight for his face! lol --Tree” 8:51:34 PM 5/24/03 “TILT! INNUENDO! FIFTEEN YARD PENALTY AGAIN!” 8:52:48 PM 5/24/03 “<sheeeesh>” 10:09:23 PM 5/24/03 Reporting... “Crawled out of my kayak on Saturday morning, in trying to stay dry and mud free, knelt on a reed about the diameter of my pinky finger, and watched it poke in my knee about an inch deep. It almost came out another direction but instead broke off. So, I had a huge chunck of wood in my knee. I managed to pull most of it out the same way it went in, but some of it broke off inside. Birch wanted to do exploratory surgery (was actually upset that I wouldn't allow him to...I think he thought his suture kit would finally be needed), but I thought a hose down with purified water, some peroxide and neosporin would do the trick. It didn't and I have a raging infection now, can't hardly bend my knee (but when I do goo oozes out), and have an extra day off work today to see the doctor, (which almost makes whatever the doctor will do worth it). Unfortunately for you all, I did not take any pictures. =(” 8:43:02 AM 5/27/03 “Oh man, that sounds really awful, Sass. I hope that the doctor can reduce the inflammation quickly. If you have some wood fibers still in there, that could have really added to the problem. Good luck and heal fast.” 8:53:27 AM 5/27/03 “Damn! You impale yourself, and your first thought isn't to pick up the camera so the rest of us can enjoy it? I thought you liked us, Sass.... Seriously, hope you didn't do any real damage and that the infection is gone real quick...” 8:54:34 AM 5/27/03 “Thanks LyndyS! I'm more worked up about whatever the doctor might do (envisioning scalpels and local anesthetics) than the whole injury process. Sometimes I really hate going to the doctor.” 8:55:59 AM 5/27/03 “I know Bitpusher, I could just kick myself. The whole "hunk of wood in the bloody hole in my knee" would've been a fantastic picture.” 8:57:27 AM 5/27/03 Elephant splinter? “Nasty! I too am disappointed by the lack of oozing pus photos. Good luck with the doc Sass.” 8:58:44 AM 5/27/03 “Sass, when I was a kid, I was always cutting up my knees. The doctor had a spray that numbed the knee so that it didn't hurt to dig out whatever. You could ask if they still have something like that.” 8:58:52 AM 5/27/03 “Ouch sassafras! sounds painful. I almost lost a finger this weekend. I was getting my pack down from the attic for a Monday dayhike and somehow caught my wedding ring on the the metal spring for the trap door. The spring poked into my finger as well and my natural reaction was to pull away. I fell off the ladder and found myself hanging from the ceiling by my wedding ring. After a few explatives and the initial shock I was able to able to pull myself up (using my wedding ring) and reach up with my right hand and swing back up on the ladder. I finger was pretty mangled where the ring cut in, but everything still seemed in working order. I quickly doused it in dish soap and pulled the ring off before the swelling got too bad. After 15 minutes of icing the finger and quick bandage job I was heading for the trail. It really was a close call. I could have done some serious damage. It's still sore and swollen today. Oh yeah, later on the trail, my hiking partner accidentally smacked me in the mouth with his walking stick and I cut my lower lip open on my teeth. Oh well, the trail was great. Happy healing everyone!” 9:02:18 AM 5/27/03 “Indiana John....OUCH! Glad you got the ring off before serious swelling set in. Birch doesn't wear a ring for just such reasons...accident waiting to happen, (or so he tells me ;) )” 9:10:10 AM 5/27/03 “Sassafras-It could have been worse. You could have sat on it and "cut your self a new one"! Yow! Dang, Indiana John!” 9:15:40 AM 5/27/03 “DAYUM you two! john, you ARE lucky! i don't wear rings for that reason. i am a maint tech so i do alot of dangerous things with my hands. i'm always scared i'll loose a digit and my guitar playing along with it. i'd truely go insane if that happened... sassy, YOWIE KAZOWIE ! ! your story reminds me of a time when i was about 10 and i got busted for fishing off the boat dock(a bigtime nono) and so i was running away, down the dock(wooden) as fast as i could(i won the 50 yd dash 3 yrs in a row, seriously) when BLAM-O! i did a cart wheel and when i stopped bouncing i realied that i'd caught a splinter in my foot.....it went in the back of my heel, then out and under the arch and then back in on th ball of my foot and then back out under my bit toe. it was about 9 inches long! this old man casually sauntered up and said, "here, lemme get that for ya , sonny" and he whipped out his needlenose form his tacklebox and cut it up and pulled it all out. makes me cringe to think about it[shiver] hope the knee heals soon” 9:24:20 AM 5/27/03 “I'm back and survived the sinus surgery. 5 days since the surgery and I still can't breathe! Argh! It's so aggravating.” 9:35:10 AM 5/27/03 “Hope it all pays off in the end miss opie” 9:39:15 AM 5/27/03 “Dang Sass, Next time just get your feet wet. I will say a prayer for you.” 9:44:04 AM 5/27/03 “Sass. you should hand in your TT Injured Reserve List Badge for NOT taking photos. man you got me all excited and then NO PHOTOS! what a bummer. I hope you feel better ASAP!! I got a BIG splinter in my little pinky once. I had to have surgery to have it removed.” 9:46:09 AM 5/27/03 “Well, I made it out of the Doctor's office with only a one inch cut and 5 steri-strips. He found another chunk of wood in my knee about 3/4 of an inch long. Best part was he's getting ready to head out on a seven day canoe trip down the Missippi in a month, so there was good conversation for the hour and a half he was fussing with me. I'm glad I went, now I have a big ole prescription of Tylenol w/ Codeine for my first aid kit. I might take one tonight, but that leaves 39. =)” 7:41:04 PM 5/27/03 “Yeah, my first aid kit is looking pretty well stocked for painkillers for a long time. Doctors are nice like that sometimes ¦ ) . Hope it gets better soon Sass. Indiana John---YIKES = 8 0 ! My Dad once saw one of his classmates rip off a finger when his class ring got caught on a net during a high school basketball game. Perhaps this is why I don't like wearing rings? Anywho, be careful!!!” 7:53:47 PM 5/27/03 “I'm going to buck the trend here and say Thank You Sass for keeping your pus to yourself, <yikes> John, everyone knows how Dangerous those rings can be! <G> I don't know anything about sinus surgery and that's probably a GOOD thing.” 7:55:49 PM 5/27/03 “Get better quick Miss Opie!” 7:58:49 PM 5/27/03 “I went to the dr today and found out that I now have a staph infection in my nose. 3 more weeks of antibiotics. grrrr! i'm so tired of taking medicine! I feel like I'm never going to get over this.” 8:06:20 PM 5/27/03 “Glad you're ok sass! Miss Opie watch that staph thing. That suff can be pretty serious.” 9:02:18 PM 5/27/03 What do you do for dry skin? “I have a scalp skin infection, so that should qualify me for this string. During five weeks in the Smokies, the skin on my face and scalp became real dry. During the night I would rub and dig off some of the dry skin in my scalp. Naturally, a number of spots got infected. This has happened on previous trips, too. Usually one or two showers clears things. But one spot got pretty bad this trip. It is centered in the back of my head and it is still draining. But it is much better. Until last night I could not sleep on it. It hurt too much. Do I need to be taking more than the one-a-day vitamins? I have considered getting some cod liver oil to take with me bp'ing. Your suggestions will be appreciated.” 9:02:35 PM 5/27/03 “I know there's something you can take to help your immune system, but I can't remember what it is. Lyndy probably knows though.” 10:10:12 PM 5/27/03 “It sounds like you might have eczima. Take some Cortaid along with you. It is difficult, but you can apply it to your scalp. Nothing you can do about it. No vitmins that I know of. I have had it all my life and it just comes and goes. For me, I look for the highest concentrate of Cortazone that I can find over the counter. I sometimes get a perscriptiong from the doctor. The perscriptiong of course works beter and faster. The over the counter just keeps it in check. In a real bad itchy situation, apply a very hot ( as hot as you can handle) wet towel or hot running water. It will easy the itchyness and will prevent you from scratching yourself raw to allow infection. Then apply cortaid or whatever. Hope this helps.” 8:17:02 AM 5/28/03 8:26:27 AM 5/28/03 “What about vitamin E? (I'm no expert mind you...just remember the brown skinned folks buying it for dryness, when I worked at a drug store a long time ago) It's available in liquid form to rub directly into the dry area. Miss Opie, get better quick! Staph infections are nasty!” 8:27:23 AM 5/28/03 “Everybody on this list: HEAL!” 8:37:32 AM 5/28/03 Thanks. “Thanks folks. I think you've identified it correctly. Your information seems to confirm why hot showers (and steam baths) usually clears things very quickly. I'll see if some of the treatments help prevent it on future trips.” 8:44:11 AM 5/28/03 “NS, one of my boys gets it real bad in the summer mostly, behing his knees and on his belly and ankles... we've not found anything ral effective but cortaid helps...” 9:53:21 AM 5/28/03 “NS, one of my boys gets it real bad in the summer mostly, behing his knees and on his belly and ankles... we've not found anything real effective but cortaid helps...” 9:53:27 AM 5/28/03 “Sorry I forgot to look at this thread today. Nowslimmer, my daughters have suffered with eczema for years. The doctor has given them cortisone cream but it helped little. Then my oldest developed depression and in the course of trying to relieve that I did some research and put her on vitamins, B-complex with 30 mg B-6 and 50 mg niacinamide, Vit C 250 mg and zinc 30 mg. After a month I had her and her sister tested and both still showed zinc deficiency. I upped the zinc to 50 mg, but even testing deficient in zinc, my older daughter's eczema cleared up completely. I put her sister on the same vitamins, and both have been eczema free for over a year now. So I would recommend that you add to your multivit at least 250 mg Vit C and 50 Mg zinc. The B vitamins are great for nerves and brain health, but I don't think that they impact the skin. They won't hurt you though so you could take them too.” 9:30:46 PM 5/28/03 “Thanks, LyndyS. I'll do it.” 10:00:31 PM 5/28/03 “Ye Gods guys! Sass, always look where you kneel! God, I did that with a piece of steel once. Had to get a tetanus booster. Indiana John: those wedding rings are just bad news! I could'nt wear my ring at work for 5 years (machine shop) and now I still have problems remembering to wear it. Maybe I should just get a ring tattoo. Miss Opie: those staph infections can be very dangerous. You tell your doctor if anything changes or fells wierd.” 7:50:58 AM 5/29/03 “"Sass, always look where you kneel!" LOL, Thank you for that wise and invaluable advice Treebait! I did look where I knelt, just didn't see the reed, as it was the same color as the tall grasses, and obscured by them.” 11:37:16 AM 5/29/03 “Where is Nowslimmer? How are the zinc and vit C working? Any improvement yet?” 11:50:49 AM 6/03/03 “LyndyS - I just took a big gulp. After a trip to Walmart with their limited supply, the gulp was:
Thanks for your help.” 4:47:01 PM 6/04/03 “Things have improved and I was finally able to get a haircur. So please remove my name form the TT Injured Reserve List. Thanks for all the help. I do have one other problem: Remembering to take the vitamins.” 1:24:42 PM 6/12/03 “What worked for my wife was getting one of those little 7-day pill things. Now she remembers every day.” 1:26:03 PM 6/12/03 “Yeah, it helps to have them organized so that you just take them with dinner. You have to make it a routine or add it to an established routine. I have trouble remembering also, but I can see the difference in my skin if I forget for a few days. Scrapes and cuts heal so much faster if I am taking the Zinc and Vitamin C regularly. My husband has these really nasty ultrathick callouses on his feet and cracks on his hands and I'm trying to get him to remember to take the supplements to see if it helps this condition as well.” 3:43:50 PM 6/12/03 “Those 7-day pill thingies are great for an every-day pill. Just keep it next to the bathroom sink so you'll see it first thing in the morning and remember to take it.” 7:15:07 PM 6/12/03 “Vitamin C and zinc will help with cracks in one's hands? I just got another nasty one going under the edge of my thumbnail. SIGH” 11:10:55 PM 6/12/03 “LyndyS -<>/b I used to get skin cracks near the corners of my fingernails. I was washing my hands ofter at work (supermarket). It appears that water was the cause. Once I started drying my hands good, especially around the nails, the skin cracks stopped occurring.” 7:03:35 AM 6/13/03 Jump to Page << prev
