I think I'll take this moment to report some good news: I am hereby taking myself off this thread. I upped my jog minutes to 28 yesterday, and my hip is feeling better than ever. I still plan to be super cautious as I try to return to racing form, but, after almost a year and a half on IR, I've had enough. Sorry to have to leave all the fun here, but then again, well, I'm not sorry!”

“A week ago today I had bypass surgery to eliminate three blocked arteries. Fortunately we discovered the problem before a heart attack, or any other damage to the heart. There is no family history and luckily I dealt with the symptoms correctly, rather than deny them until something happened that couldn't have been reversed. Rehab is underway and if all goes well I should be backpacking by July. Mentally it's been tough having gone from being in relatively good shape to it now taking all I can do to get up the 14 steps we have here in the house.


On the plus side, Martyb offered to carry the Alaskan Ambers and Weezr says not to worry about cleaning the tubs.”

“C'mon Geezr... What do all the college kids say around this time of the year (spring break)? "Show us your--, uh, scar?" I've been checking your webshots page every day - get Weezr to get the digital camera out and let's see it!

Actually, the reason Weezr said not to worry about the tubs is that Geezr called my mom to come over and clean them (she should pretty much be recovered from that back surgery a year or so ago).”

I played golf last weekend (and I don't play golf) and I think I've done something to my back. Terrible lower back pain all this week that is getting worse not better. I think I'm going to see the chiropractor. To top it off I'm having wisdom teeth removed this afternoon. This weekend is going to SUCK!”

“We hiked last weekend..and not thinking of bugs yet..we were swarmed by gnats..biting ones at that!!! Didn't have any bug stuff with us either. Kinda put a damper on things :(

“Tooth extractions went well. Much better than I anticipated. They only did the right side though, so I have to go back for the left side.

Back pain didn't go away though. Looks like I'd better schedule that chiropractic appointment”

“Finally went to the chiropractor today and got and adjustment. I think my neck will be better in few days. She wants me to come back though and discuss my X-rays. Setting me up for the regular visit, no doubt.

I could do worse, she's cute, lol....”

Tore my calf muscle playing softball last week - 2-3 weeks on crutches and 5-6 til I can walk without a limp..so says the orthopedic surgeon - who by the way, is single, cute and wants to "have a drink"..lol

Anyone got any good stretching exerices? Doc says muscle tears are due to loss of flexibilty..esp as we get older...

“Sorry I didn't get back to this earlier, IJ. Yes, my neck is already better. Chiropractors can do a lot when all docs do is prescribe muscle relaxers. Just don't buy into the "spinal malajustment is the source of all disease" crap you will hear from some chiropractors, and you will be fine.”

“I've been living on advil and icing my lower back like crazy. 2 chiropractic appts and have to go back Thursday. Although I am on the mend, my left side feels 100% better, my right side is still painful. But I am allowed to 'walk' read NO BACKPACK!”

“Yep, down here in Florida they get to grow all year long!”

“Test results not in yet, but it would appear that I am suffering from gout. I thought maybe I had a stone bruise or sprained my toe over the weekend. Of course, not knowing what gout is or what aggravates it, I promptly went and had a seafood salad and beer for dinner last night. I thought I was going to die about 4 this morning.

If there is any good news associated with this, it is that it will go away in another couple of days.........how long before it comes back is the only question.”

“I've had an attack of gout before. It's been a while since I've had one though. I used to could feel one coming on when I ate something really rich, but it's been years.

Maybe you'll be lucky like me, and it will be extremely sporadic.”

“I saw my Pulmonologist yesterday. The pleural effusion (fluid) around my left lung hasn't grown any since she drew out a liter and a half last Monday. A small amount remains but she's hoping that will dissolve on it's own. If not, she'll draw it out in two weeks. Needless to say, I'm hoping it dissolves. ;-)

I see my cardiac surgeon on Wednesday. That visit will include an EKG, more x-rays, etc. Hoping to come out of there with a clean bill of health.

Then it's another four weeks of rehab, followed by a stress test and then hopefully back to the mountains.

Walking around the block at a snail's pace isn't all it's cracked up to be. However, having a healthy heart is.

“Chili - With gout you have to watch your diet, but with management it should not be a problem. Check with your doctor to get more specifics.
Geezr - Hope you get that clean bill of health. The mountains are great medicine. Take it easy awhile until you build yourself back up. Don't try to do it all at once.”
