I plan to make some margaritas tonight, but I'm not happy with any recipies I've tried. I found a lot of them on the net, but how do you know what is good from them?

So I figured if there was a good place to find opinionated boozehounds, Trail Talk would be the place.

So anty up, who has killer margaritas?

What's up rock.... haven't seen you post here in awhile. I judge a good margartita from a bad upon how hot the barmaid is.

I lurk here a lot, and mainly post on gear stuff. The political stuff, humor stuff, and other threads bore me. But like I said, if your looking for a bunch of backpackers with lime green jello for blood, this is the place.

BTW, for that one thread on how to know if your a newbie, if you have read a post by me, you probably aren't a newbie. I've known this board when it was a 100% hiking board without registration and we all used our real names - 1997 WOW!

LOL SGT Rock. It seems like yesterday I was a newbie, but I've been around for 2 years now. Time flies. Hopefully, I'll meet ya on a hike soon, and maybe you'll have a good maragrita recipe by then.

2 years ago I put up my own site LOL. God I need to get back to the mountains, Louisiana is KILLING me.

I still think of TT like a campfire where you go to get some hiking knowledge, but also all the other stuff you get talking around the fire. Some good, some bad.

Anyway, the wife is trying to make them now. 1 part tripplesec, 3 parts tequila, 6 parts margarita mix, and lots of ice.

They just don't taste quite right yet. Hopefully I still have taste buds left by the time we get it right.

Get a margarita mix! Add booze, enjoy on the rocks, Rock. Or, just get Chi-Chi's big ole bottle of margarita mix, all ready to go! They say to mix it with ice. Plenty good at 10% alcohol (I think... hic) right from the COLD bottle.

Have I mentioned $1.25 maggies Thursday nights at the Servicemen's Club, Preston, MN? And all you can eat tacos?? Oh yeaaaaaaaaah, bay-beeee!!

I'm not a fan of margarita mix. We like 'em with good tequila, Contreau (sp?) and frozen lime juice. On the rocks, none of this frozen stuff.

I just found out we had some strawberry frozen concentrate. Now I have this whole piture of magaritas to drink before I can make a new batch with the good stuff.

DANG!

After many, many tries gave up on building a decent margarita from scratch and settled on using a prepared mix.

Generally speaking mixes are not better that the home built variety but they are certainly no worse.
And they are no more costly, are easier and quicker to make, and are not near as messy.

Hey Steve Hiker, I was just out Friday night, and despite the 50 degree nights the Skeeters are still killers out there. On top of that hunting season is going full throttle - there was someone hunting at 2100 that night (deers' eyes are brighter in the spotlight then). Add to all that the drunk 4 wheeler racing in the woods until 0100 saturday to make a bad hike terrible.

I know what ya mean. When I was in Kisatchie last year it was the same thing. Buncha rednecks w/guns all over the place. That's why I'm gonna hit I-59 to NC/TN or maybe the Little River Canyon area in NE Alabama. Not that I'll be safe from drunken shotguns there, but at least the mosquitos will be left behind.

Sgt Rock,

I am in possession of the worlds hands down, best margarita recipe, but if I tell you I'll have to kill you, and I don't know that I'm up to it.

If your need for the recipe has not expired, email me and I might be willing to share, provided you pass a rigourous screening process.

SGT. R0ck,

This summer, some friends of ours had this bucket of mix they bought. You dump in a fifth of tequila and mix it up and freeze it, then have margarita slushies ready in the freezer. Not the best margarita I've ever had, but it sure hit the spot that hot summer evening!

I dont think it matters what you put into it. but make sure you use Fresh Lime!

Tequila One cup (8 ounces)
Triple sec a quarter cup
Limeade frozen concentrate half can (6 ounces)
Lemon juice one fresh lemon
Ice Two cups large cubes
Water a half cup

or leave out the ice, and another 1/2 cup water and serve over the rocks.

IMHO white tequila makes better margaritas,,,,,dark or "gold" tequila makes better shooters...

The Perfect Margarita
Posted by Lulu Buffett (Friday June 27 2003 @ 01:59PM CDT)

1 1/4 oz. Jose Cuervo 1800 Tequila
1/2 oz. Margaritaville Blanca Tequila
1/2 oz. Orange Curacao
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1 1/4 oz. Rose's Lime Juice
juice of half a fresh lime

Shake well with crushed ice. Pour gently into chilled glass rimmed with salt. Garnish with lime.

I think I will have one for Sgt Rock tonight.

As a side note, I remembered this thread after visiting the site for Lulu's Sunset Grill. A true landmark and fine Lower Alabama establishment.

It is moving next month and I fear the new site just won't be quite as good as the current location.

Maybe it's time for a road trip.

The Perfect Margarita
Posted by OPIE

1 - litre white or gold Tequila

1 - Beautiful Mexican girl from "Boys Town" across the river...who will let you call her Margarita...or whatever you may choose.

Uncap bottle before you arrive at Boys Town to increase the chances of you finding J.Lo's twin sister. DO NOT DRINK ENTIRE BOTTLE....save some for disinfecting. Also do not fall asleep...or if you do..don't carry keys or wallet.

This...is the PERFECT Margarita!

soooo with holland 6 hours ahead of us (my fav uncle leaves there so I KNOW) that would make it 6:45pm there.

maple, the point is that if it's 12:20 at your place then it CAN'T be 6:45 there. Where are the missing 25 minutes? It can be 6:20 there but not 6:45.

Your uncle may "leave" there, but if it's 6:25 minutes ahead then he needs to stay out of those specialty stores they have in Holland.

Maybe in Holland the time zone breaks out into minute intervals instead of hours,,,,

Of course the rest of the planet is divided into hourly time zones.

There are a couple of half-hour zones. Adelaide in Australia is in one.

Here's a link to the current times of major cities around the world. Quite a few of them are in half-hour zones.

The time zone thing is helpful during the summer. I'm at the extreme east of the central time zone. When I go hiking in the Smokies and NC it's the extreme west of the eastern time zone. It's like getting an extra hour of hiking time because my internal clock still wakes me up on central time.

One must also remember that politics can have a lot to do with what time it is...Just because a place falls into the (say, for instance) GMT+02 time zone doesn't mean that's what the Supreme Leader or Mufti or Raja or whatever agrees.

A good margarita has to start with good tequila, and Cuervo (with the exception of Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Anejo) is not good tequila.

The hands down best, IMHO, is El Tesoro de Don Felipe. Herradura is also a good choice. Blancos (unaged) and Reposados (up to 1 yr. old) are better choices for 'ritas. Anejos (1 yr. and older) are best for sipping and are a bit too smooth to cut through the lime, orange liqueur of a 'rita.

While Cuervo might not be the best tequila, my budget won't allow me to drink $50 margaritas. The last time I had a $500 bar tab it was a little hard to explain the next day.
