Things you shouldn't find in your garden.....

Treebait had peter peppers (yea, that is what they are called) growing in the garden in Florida.

I'm growing peter peppers again this year, too.

I considered growing clitoria vine, but decided not to. Mostly because they're best grown in Florida and not NC.

I planted the sunchokes (I hate the name Jerusalem artichokes for a native American species)and shallots yesterday, ad well as potting up some other things. I have one zucchini seed that's already developed its second set of real leaves; none of the other zuke seeds have even sprouted yet. It already needs a bigger pot.

Sunchokes are a sunflower that develops really tasty tubers by the way.

Marijuana in one post and "potted" in the next; SC seems to have an agenda.

Seems, hell...

The shallots are coming up nicely already.

HPM, amazing guy that he is, got most of the pond membrane folding and taping dome yesterday. If the lap sealant comes in tomorrow or Wednesday (I fat fingered the zip code, and haven't heard back if it's been corrected or not)then I'll be able to fill up the pond on Thursday. Woo-Hoo!

Lol, NF. There's a lot of shallnots around this neck of the woods, too.

I just finished up the lap sealant on all the tape we use to cover folds in the pond membrane. Not as neat as I'd like, but nothing's moving around now. Its in the lower 60s outside right now, but down in the big black pit of an empty pond it's freakin' hot. I couldn't touch the membrane in the sunny areas without jerking away because of the heat. That made the sealant cure very, very quickly.

My jerusalem artichokes are poking through the garden soil now, too. Yay!

One of my neighbors is French/ Vietnamese and a fantastic cook. She came over last night (Primarily because her daughters were playing with Laurel) to see the pond, the fish and the garden. She's excited about the shallots and garlic coming up.

It makes me realize there's quite a few people around here waiting to see what I grow and how I do it. A couple of neighbors have followed suit and put in raised garden beds of their own.

I'm excited about it, but at the same time it does make me want a fence.

Careful with the koi! One of my wife's clients lost a bunch to an egret. When she went out to chase it off, it menaced her (she says).

I'm doing all container gardening this year. I'm just wanting some salad stuff and some herbs. I'm thinking of doing my tomatoes hanging. That should confound the squirrels.

Nigal, hanging tomatoes just become edible swing sets for squirrels, unless you hang them from second story windows or something.

I had plenty of run-ins with egrets in Florida.

I've got two months before I can plant anything here. Hell, its snowing out right now. I'm jealous of you folks who have things sprouting already.

We're going to do a bit of relandscaping this summer. Since we (Gordie, at least, I was pregnant and useless) concentrated on the kitchen last summer, this summer we'll concentrate on the outdoors.

I'm hoping to get a job at a local nursery this summer. I always said if I quit engineering, I'd go work at a nursery again. I worked at one in high school and college. I LOVE seeing nice, neat rows of annuals and perrenials. LOVE it. I'm a total dork about it.

Make the snow stop!

I've considered getting a part timer at least at the local nursery near me.

Well, now I get to start some tomato seedlings for one of the daisy scout moms. She wants fried green tomatoes something fierce.

i bought Steve some jalapeno's and cilantro yesterday and most of it is planted already. i need to get a few more planters for him. i think i'll buy some more chives, some garlic, and green onion.

i might do tomatos. which kind are easiest? what are the best planters to put them in? and i have two areas to plant. one is all shade and the other is all sun, which will be the best for them?

Sun is best for tomatoes. Be sure to give them calcium to avoid blossom end rot.

To paraphrase a line from a certain movie...

The Pond is now FULLY OPERATIONAL!

Hot dang! Just over 5400 gallons, by the way, and its beautiful. I can't put the fish in just yet though, because I'm trying to inoculate/ biologically prime the biofilter. Soon, I shall have happy fish again.

Ah heck, they're happy now. They have a heavily filtered fishy version of a hot tub right now, with the 2 aquarium heaters going.

Talk to me about rain barrels. We might do one this summer.

Let me be more specific with my questions...

Do you have a specific rain barrel that you bought, or doyou have some rigged rain barrel?

Can I buy one at Home Depot? Or do I need to order from an internet site (did a bit of research, can't find any at HD or Lowe's)?

Does yours have a spigot to get water out? A pump? How does it all work???

Do you have problems with mosquitos and such? How do you resolve that? How do you keep leaves and debris out of it?

Thanks. :)

smiley, we made rain barrels last year. Dirt cheap and easy.

We used some old (free) food grade 40gal plastic barrels( maybe freecycle or craigs list?) and I put in a hose spigot on the bottom of each, maybe 6in from the bottom to allow big stuff to settle. We put a hole in the top of each large enough for the downspout to go right in. But instead of the spout going into the barrel it goes into two small (6"dia) plastic flower pots that are nested. The top one has the bottom 2" cut off and a layer of window screen in wrapped around it then tucked into the others. This keeps debris out amd mosquitos from laying eggs. Easy as pie.

I haven't done the rain barrels yet, but I really need to get on that project.

I suck at uploading pics, so as soon as I can get HPM away from watching Avatar with Laurel, I'll ask him to do so.
