Sass, that sounds like cucumber beetles. pick em off and destroy. Pick off any orange eggs you may find on the underside of leaves too.

WK, I dont trust JS with food! or liqure!
It takes a few years for grapes to get going anyway.

"Mower with engine troubles starts up and runs for an hour, intermittantly stalling and then satrting back up. Birch had to restrain me. I was ready to go toe to toe in my jammies with those weasels!"

Most noise ordinances state that once a "noise" becomes of issue to one party, that party can notify the offending party of their violation in hopes to remedy this issue. If no common ground can be realized, then the noise ordinance should force the offending party to quite said noise, or face a civil infraction, and/or fine.

Personally, I wouldn't stand to be tormented like that in the first place. Perhaps this is the only time they could cut their lawn, or there is some sort of arraignment that could be made between the two of you; however, I understand that it is possible to have difficult people living next door -- I have no real insight to the relationship you have with the people who live around you to really know whether or not that is realistic option, or not. Your early bedtime could possible play a role in this as well.

We have the dip#&%!$s that drive around with the car stereo systems that cost more than the car itself in our neighborhood.

The bass in one guys car is so loud, the windows of my house and my neighbor's house vibrate as he goes by. I finally called the police 2 nights ago and gave them the make and model of the car. The operator interupted me and said it is a silver car right? I said, "how did you know?" He has had several tickets written for disturbance of the peace written. He pays them each time.

I told her that I am going to loose it one of these days and stand out in the middle of the street next time and wait for him. When he stops, I am going to drag his ass from the car and beat the pulp out of him. Then trash his system.

She siad you are not the first to say this.

It was annoying as hell and the window was shut at 10:00. I was joking around about the being restrained and going toe to toe in my jammies with the weasels. Guess I shoulda added a wink or something.

Lots going on in the garden lately.

I have a shi* load of plants to put in the ground right now that were free from one of my neighbors who is moving. He isnt a gardener and has lived there only a short time so the plants were already there when he moved in. He said I could take all I want so I took tons of daylillies, some fern, lilly of the valley, a giant jack in the pulpit (he didnt even know what it was and I have always wanted them!!!) lambs ears, a boulder, some planter holders for my step railings, and some stepping stones :) I have my work cut out for me to plant all these things because I don't have a planting bed for them yet hehehe

My neighbor gave me some flowers called cannon (I think) they multiply kinda like bulbs but faster apparently. They get about 8' tall with great big flowers. I don't really know that much about flowers, but is it too late to plant them? Any body know WTH I'm talking about? I don't think I do...

Cannas, a tropical rizome....

They love heat. Go ahead and plant them. However, if you don't dig them up in the fall when they die down they will not be back next year. You have to store them in a cool basement of a cool dark room in some peat or sawdust over the winter and replant them yearly.

Are you sure? There's a ton of Cannas around town here, and I highly doubt they dig them all up. I could be wrong.

My garden is already overgrown. Its my first time with an acutal plot of land I could plant in. I have WAY too many tomato plants, so a couple will have to be dug up and put in pots.

Something is eating my pepper plant. Not sure waht it is, seems to be the only thing being munched on right now.

OH, I did have a question. Why would my impatiens be turning yellow, but still flowering and not wilting? Many of the leaves are yellow, but otherwise they look good. I've been trying to keep them well watered.

Sounds like too much water to me smiley. I have been reading Jerry Bakers stuff about gardening and lawn care, let me see if I can find an article I read about saving your pepper plants too, his stuff is all abotu using household concoctions to help your garden. Pretty cool stuff. I have two videos, and 3 or 4 books about it.

Yeah, they are definitly in a sunnier-than-I-thought spot. Thought the leaves on the trees would block the sun there, but I was wrong.

Went out and picked as much lettuce as I'll be able to fit in my 'fridge. It's gonna be some ungodly hot temperature today and it would've bolted for sure. Also am up to about six or seven cups of raspberries, (haven't measured what I picked today yet), in the freezer for making jam later in the year when it cools down a bit.
The zucchinis and yellow crook neck squashes should be ready tomorrow, tomatoes are hanging thick on the vines, peppers are loaded with blossoms, the potatoes are going gangbusters. No snow peas though, we planted them too late I think, no asperagus, except for two spears and our pumpkin and cucumber don't look too happy. I'm pretty sure there's not quite enough sun for them.

I planted everything late. The garden is 90% weeded for the first time this year. It's absolutely amazing how much plants will jump in size once they don't have to compete with weeds. I made some llama manure tea and it seems to be working quite well. This was tougher than I thought because I had to learn to poop like a llama. The pumpkin plants are huge, summer squash as well, cukes ready to climb the fence (I suspect a breakout attempt). Corn seems happy as well as the peas, beans and onions. I am pleasantly surprised how well this first year garden is going in sandy, rocky soil that had never been gardened. Next year I'll add some chickens and really poop up the garden.

Sounds like yours is going great guns, Sass. I should have tons of wild blueberries in less than 2 weeks:)

We had our first two tomatoes the day before yesterday. We have been picking basil leaves, parsley, and oregano for a couple of weeks. The pesto sauce is excellent again this year. We have a couple of squash vines and one watermelon vine. Two jalapeno and five garlic plants to make salsa. It's been a good year so far.

I just got 15 yellow pear tomatoes, 2 weird looking eggplants, and a mess of ancho chiles out of the garden. Laurel thinks they're for a salad. Well, she can have a bunch of the tomatoes but I plan on making a version of ratatoille for lunch.

This is my big project this year with limited space..my honey LOVES Sugar Snap Peas so I planted and then built a platform trellis and strung it tight with Hemp Twine for them to reach the top!

And for fun, some heirloom tomatoes, a brandywine and a black prince (I do have more 'standard' ones as well, but if I had found these first they would ALL be heirloom, I will collect seed!) They are with radishes and parsley, garlic in the back and various onions, chives, and basil.

Went out to pick berries this morning and found four spears of asperagus! Just a bit late. I can't figure out what happened this year, generally we get about forty spears. Just five this year and two days from July!

So, I obviously planted my tomatoes too close together. Think is OK if I take a few out and put them in big pots? They shouldn't have too much shock, should they?

Wow, I just had to pick another handful of the yellow pear tomatoes that have ripened just since yesterday morning. I like gardening here!

Although I do have one new problem that wandered in; I found deer tracks around one end of my yard, over by the blackberries that suddenly seem not quite so plentiful.

Wow, cool gardens. I'm jealous-- we are finishing some stuff on our deck so I haven't been able to properly plant. However, I got 4 ceramic pots and started planting some tomatoes there, (never tried container tomatoes before, so wish me luck!)

BTW-- I drove up to my house yesterday to see 2 tiny gold finches raiding my zinnias for seeds! 1 flew away before I noticed the 2nd one. Unfortunately, when I opened my car window to take a picture, the 2nd one flew away... ;-)

Dry?!

Smiley, leave them close together, don't dig them up now. If you do they'll be busy trying to reestablish roots and not making fruit.

We have one of our rain barrels up and running. It filled to the top with yesterday's rain. Now, when it gets dry I can open a valve and the soaker hose attached will water all of the new shade garden. It works better than I imagined it would.

I got plain white ones. My plan is to get the bamboo fencing (the kind that's all wobbly and kinda woven together), and wrap each barrel in it, eventually.

Sass-- have you tried making freezer jam? Doesn't really require much cooking and the fruit tastes fresher... you can make it in a low-sugar version-- which really isn't taking away much-- the jam is softer, but the flavor is better. ;-)
pinkbubelz

Nope, I just do the powdered pectin (also can make lower sugar) and can it in a pressure cooker.

The rain barrel works great, with a soaker hose or to fill a hand watering can. There was not enough pressure to use a regular hose. I saw an ingenious way to keep debris and mosquitoes out of the barrel in a magazine and we tried it (use a plastic flower pot with big drainage holes in the bottom, line the bottom of the pot with window screen, cut a hole in the top of the barrel so that the pot hangs down into the barrel but won't fall through, insert downspout into flower pot); it works very well.

I am done weeding for the year.I put down 4 layers of newspaper and covered it with straw, this keeps the weeds down and the moisture in the soil. I have been doing this for over 12 years with good results.
