I've already put my garden to bed with the exception of the perennials. the mums and dahlias are still blooming. Once the frost kills the dahlias back I need to dig up and store the tubers. Then i'll mulch everything with leaves and hay.

My pimento peppers are still going strong. I've used a lot of bay laurel lately, and as a result the shrub is having a major late season growth spurt. I still need to prep the big bed for all the garlic, and I have yet to put in any cool season veggies. The swiss chard available around here is looking punky, and they sold out of my favorite lettuces. Drat.

I'm in the middle of my chile harvest. I'll have another 2 dozen before the weather finally turns cold in another month or so. I've made one batch of hot sauce already and my next batch is going to be a tequilla based hot sauce, I can't wait! Anyone know where I can get sauce bottles so I can bottle it?

Not too sure on bottles reptiles, but I made some sauce a couple years ago with some triple sec in it. Turned out great.

Well, there isnt much left of the garden....sigh....

My white alpine strawberries I grew from seed this year are actually one of the last things still blooming (and still making fruit!)

This is probebly the last dahlia bloom...

This creeping thyme (again id grown it from seed) has a few blooms left.

This Burgandy Gallardia (from seed again) Is acting like it is still june, blooming its heart out still.

Things have moved more indoors...the Peacock amarylis decided to bloom early this year.

I dont like henry fields.

They really dont carry the stuff I like to grow and they aren't organic.

did you even look at the link. They have all types of items. Do your seeds have to be organic?

Sass writes to me almost 1.5 years ago.....

Sir Pete, package is in the mail. You've got two types of iris', some zebra grass, oregano (careful where you plant it, it spreads nutsy fast), and a bit of white columbine (it's the short variety). Hope it's all okay when it arrives. Look for it Tuesday.”

I was just going back through these posts and it dawned on me what was growing all over my back yard.......

Oregano!!!

Every time I cut the grass I am saying to myself, boy that smells real familiar....what the heck is that. I looked at it a couple of times and though it seems as plane as day now it never dawned on me what it was....

Well now the mystery is over.

I'm glad to hear at least the oregono made there alive.

I just dug my last sweet potatoes a couple hours ago, really should have done it sooner.

I was shocked the other day at Ingle's Supermarket to see very large 'organically' grown sweet potatoes priced at $3.98 apiece!

All of my garlic is coming up nicely now. I'm leaving most of the sweet potatoes in the ground and still growing. That way they won't rot before I cook them. My semitropical "malabar spinach" haven't noticed the cooldown yet, they're still growing fast. Must be the water from the fish pond. That stuff is the greatest fertilizer I've ever used.

My favorite time of year has arrived. Garden catalog season! :)

I spend hours and hours perusing all the nifty plants, new hybrids and cool yard stuff offered.

I am not able yet to grow potatoes, sweet potatoes or onions that even start to look as good as the ones from the supermarket

but a little more practice and I will.

Most every other of my crops are far superior to what can be bought.

Ah, poop. Bacterially digested fish poop, actually. Lots of it. I just cleaned out the brushes and filter sponges in our koi ponds' biofilter. All this brown sludge that I was loathe to touch until I noticed it smells better than prime compost; not poopy or fishy at all. My garden's gonna love this stuff. Of course thanks to splashing water from the hose I got coated in the stuff as well. Now that part was gross.

Oh, I know. When I change the pond water I just run a hose from the pump to one of the garden beds. I've still got peppers growing and producing a lot of fruit; my garlic is growing nicely now. The sasanqua camellia was just covered in pale pink blooms this year. It's never done that. The malabar spinach is a semitrpoical vine that's supposed to die back when it gets cool here. Nope, it's still growing too.

No such luck here. I should be growing kale, swiss chard, and lots of other cool weather veggies now. The problem is I planted too much garlic, and that's taken up 2 whole beds. I suppose I could start pulling up all the decorative stuff in one bed and put something there. Maybe I'll do that soon.

I took out my remaining guava tree (the fruit was never good) so I can put up big honking trellises made from the bamboo I harvested a few months ago. Indeterminate tomatoes tend to get about 15 feet tall, or long, if they grow horizontally. Dang things are vines. I figure I can put in a few cucumber or bean vines at the same time. I really need to amend the soil though. It's just sand with other minerals in it right now. I hoped today was going to be good and sunny before the cold front arrived, rather than overcast. My garlic isn't liking all the cloudy days we've had.

I have started getting catalogs in the mail. It has been unseasonable warm winter here. Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot have all started putting out the spring gardening items. Just got me in the mood walking around and looking at all the seeds they have out.

Dont fall into the trap Ewker :)

This year Im scalling back my veggi garden as I plan on MORE TRIPS! and I am really the only one eatting veggies in my house besides the animals. I will grow enough for me fresh and frozen for the off season, and for the pets that like fresh veggies, and some for dehydrating for BP meals. Usually I grow tons of stuff and just give it all away, and since I grow a lot of unusual veggies (like white tomatoes and cucumbers) that most people dont know about around here, its hard to even get people to take them off my hands and it goes to waste.

I got most of my garden catalogs back around christmas. Having a better defined gardening space has helped, but now that we're 'developing' the back yard into a more widely useable space, I have even more areas for herbs, veggies, all that stuff. Any veggies or whatever left over, that hasn't been nabbed by 'coons, 'possums or turtles, goes into the koi pond. Koi especially love melons and cucumbers.

SC, I am not going to have a big garden since it just me. I will dehydrate anything I can't eat before it goes bad. Dehydrated tomatoes are great. I still have some from last fall.

Did a fall garden this year (I live in central Texas) -- must have had about 200 green, still growing tomatoes when we got nailed by a cold snap. It was very sad to see my veggies die.

fluffer, you can pull the plants and hang them upside down in a dark place and the bigger ones will slowly ripen (if you get them in before it freezes)

You can always make green tomato chutney. My mom would do that with any tomatoes left that got caught in the first frost.
