Not victimless
It is not a victimless crime especially in this case. Oxycontin which is the drug he has admitted being addicted to, is a prescription drug and must be stolen. When it is stolen there is less for the persons who have it prescribed to them for intractable pain and thus drives up the price.

Study refutes Limbaugh's take on media

By Larry Keller, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 7, 2003

Commentator Rush Limbaugh's comments on the media's supposedly kid-glove treatment of black quarterbacks not only got him sacked, they are wrong, says a Florida Atlantic University professor.

"Rush Limbaugh just didn't have the facts. Love him or hate him, he was wrong," said David Niven, an associate professor of political science with an interest in media coverage on race.

Limbaugh opined during a recent ESPN telecast that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is overrated because the "media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well." The furor that followed forced Limbaugh's resignation from the sports network.

Niven conducted an extensive study of media coverage of NFL quarterbacks in 2002 in order to learn why fans so often prefer a team's backup signal caller. In doing so, he compared fans' attitudes about black and white NFL quarterbacks.

The professor analyzed more than 10,000 stories from 25 major newspapers to see how much credit and blame quarterbacks received for their team's triumphs and failures. And he compared news coverage of seven black quarterbacks -- including McNabb -- with seven white quarterbacks of comparable skill and playing time.

The black quarterbacks had an average NFL efficiency rating of 80.2, compared with 80.3 for their white counterparts.

The black players' names appeared in headlines in 5.7 percent of the stories, vs. 5.4 percent for the white athletes. The performance of black quarterbacks was panned in 12.1 percent of stories, while white quarterbacks were criticized in 11.7 percent of articles. Black quarterbacks were praised in 9.2 percent of stories, compared with 9.1 percent for their white colleagues

"There's no significant statistical difference at all," Niven said. "It's darn near equal."

The same held true when Niven compared news coverage of an individual black quarterback vs. a white counterpart with a similar statistical ranking. So in comparing media treatment of McNabb with the San Francisco 49ers' Jeff Garcia, for example, there still was no statistically significant difference, Niven said. And if Limbaugh had done his homework, Niven said, he would have discovered media stories last year with headlines such as "Eagles Don't Seem to Miss McNabb" and "Eagles Soar Minus McNabb" when he missed several games because of an injury.

"I think (Limbaugh's) intention was to get attention, to offend, to say something that wouldn't be forgotten after the show," Niven said.

"In that regard, he succeeded."

"We're going to let you destroy your life. We're going to make it easy and then all of us who accept the responsibilities of life and don't destroy our lives on drugs, we'll pay for whatever messes you get into."
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec. 9, 1993

"I'm appalled at people who simply want to look at all this abhorrent behavior and say people are going to do drugs anyway let's legalize it. It's a dumb idea. It's a rotten idea and those who are for it are purely 100 percent selfish."
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec 9, 1993

"If (Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders) wants to legalize drugs, send the people who want to do drugs to London and Zurich, and let's be rid of them.
-- Rush Limbaugh show, Dec 9, 1993

"There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

"What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too."

I would imagine it's hard to do your homework when you're lying face down on your bathroom floor in a puddle of drool, urine and oxycontin residue.

Rush Limbaugh will spend $1 million on a lawyer, $500K on re-hab, return to work and cry on the air about his torment with pain-killers, receive great aplomb, write a book about it and make $8-10 million on it.

Some unemployed construction worker with a bad back will do the same thing and go to jail for 5 years on a piece of legislation passed under pressure from Rush's listeners.

The cycle continues...

PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH...
Violins rush quotes are excellent.Rush lived by the sword and hopefully his career and stature will die by it.
A few years ago Rush mysteriously lost his hearing.I dont recall him ever revealing what the cause was.Apparently one of the side effects of abusing the drugs he's addicted to is hearing loss.So i guess he just lied to everybody about when he said didnt know what caused his impairment?Another physical change occured also and that was a huge weight loss. Now,did he ever say what diet regimen he was under?I dont remember him say the oxycontin diet!!
RUSH WASNT' RIGHT.

It will be interest to see if Rush fights the charges, acknowledges he was wrong on criminal treatment for drug offenders - or if he sticks to his principles, pleads no contest and does the time.

I have to concede Tango's point that supporting illegal drug trade does have consequences beyond those for the user.

You know, a person kinda hates to pile on the poor, ignorant dude. On the other hand, someone who has listened to his abrasive, misleading, and hateful drivel more than once, might actually revel in his downfall.
What I can't believe is someone who would try to come to his defense and continue to uphold him as the purveyor of conservative philosophy and values. That is just sad.

what amazes me is all the misconceptions about him that liberals have and continue to spread.

he is an analist. he makes his living commenting on things in the news. it's about politics.

he doesn't ride around an a moral high horse at all. he's actually a real human being, just like all of us here. who among us is perfect?

hoping he will get reemed is rather inhumane of you, in light of the fact that you are supposed to be tolerant and understanding.

anybody in here perfect? anybody got skelitensin the closet? might be interesting to know everybodies past so we could negate everybodies opinion if that person has made a mistake in their past. you rekon and demorcats have made mistakes?

i think rush screwed up and he will pay whatever price the justice system says he should pay. but his show will continue to be the most listened to on the planet. deal wit it.....

I think the cheeseburgers and cigarettes had as much to do with Jerry's heart attack as his drug use.

Marion Berry was smokin' crack well into his fifties.

Republicans don't give a ____ about condemning someone without due process:

GENEVA, Oct. 10 — The International Red Cross reiterated its criticism of Washington on Friday for ignoring repeated appeals to give legal rights to U.S. military detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. ICRC officials, after a visit to the military base, said many detainees were suffering “a worrying deterioration” in mental health because they are held without charges and without legal counsel.
THEY HAVE NO IDEA about their fate and they have no means of recourse at their disposal through any legal mechanism,” said ICRC spokesman Florian Westphal.
Some detainees, suspected of links to the fallen Afghan Taliban regime or al-Qaida terrorist network, have been at Guantanamo for more than 18 months.
Westphal said the ICRC, the only independent body with access to the detainees, had yet to see “any significant movement” from U.S. officials to its long-standing request that the United States give the detainees legal rights in accordance with international conventions governing prisoners of0 war.
“We have observed what we consider to be a worrying deterioration in the psychological health of a large number of the internees” because of the uncertainty of their situation, Westphal told The Associated Press.
International rights groups say the indefinite detentions without charge, which have led to 32 suicide attempts by 27 detainees, are inhumane.

Whatever the status, the ICRC said: “People held as a result of conflict or armed violence are protected by international humanitarian law, and should be treated humanely

But Rush is wrong to one extent....it`s the people selling the drugs to the kids on the streets that are low lifes.America is losing the war on drugs....Yet in canada they are now handing out clean needles to IV drug users...It didn`t work in Holland and it won`t work here....Our nations are in trouble and the Left ...just seem to be in a hurrry to see it happen!!!

I have agreed with a lot of what Rush stands for and some of what he says. Now that he has admitted that he is a drug addict and is checking in to a center, I gotta say, how can I listen to him again with a clear conscience? I can’t. It is akin to TV evangelist getting busted with a hooker then asking for forgiveness and going right back to preaching and condemning about adultery. How can he be valid again? How can after Rush has preached against drugs and the legalization of them, how can he be valid again?

I do feel bad for him and I do think it’s a shame to take shuch joy in his demise but I also feel like he’s been, as Budder would say, shuckin’ some jive.

Based on what appears to be tru (and Rush has made a partial confession on air) to not be a hypocrite, Rush can do one of two things:

1) say he was wrong about how drug users should be treated,

2) plead guilty promptly - and do real time.

Either the prinicples were wrong, or they should apply to him. If He does 2)I will say he was wrong - but I will have to respect him one. (if he pleads guilty and does time somewhere way down the line, I will probably assume that was the best deal he could cut - and he tried to duck it).

How many people, besides Alaska, do you think are reveling in Rush's demise on this site? I think most people, once their initial euphoria is over, (which comes from one less atack dog on the airwaves), do feel compassion for the misguided fool. The reason we can feel compassion is because we have all had difficulties in our lives and have probably had to ask for forgiveness. However, while Rush was on the top of his game, he didn't ask anyone to pray for drug users and condemned them soundly.
I can hear Dylan now....."How does it FEEL????".
