I print my maps 11 x 17. I have a laser plotter at work I can use, but I prefer smaller maps.

Besides, printing at work would be ripping off your employer. Next thing you know, you'd be POSTING TO TT at work and from there it's a very short trip to FOOD STAMPS AND WELFARE!

Anybody here like maps?

I'm chiming in a little late here - but I loved reading about everyone's passions for maps. I have had maps on my walls at home since I was about 6 years old. I now have them up on my office - (Everest, Smokys, Yosemite right now). I got my grandfather's map collection when he passed away. It's really just all the maps from National Geopraphic from the 50's and 60's. They are fragile, but cool to look through.

I ended up with a minor in geography because I enjoy maps so much.

When I'm on the trail, I love to see where I am on the map. To look at a landmark in front of me and on he map at the same time gives me a sense of connection. It's not so much that I am concerned about getting lost. It's just feels cool to track myself on the map. I get muh more satisfaction out of a hike if I have a map with me.

Problem - some of the trail map packages are dang expensive! The Florida Trail is well over $100 - but it goes to a good cause.

My wife caught me with a bunch of maps once. I was making annotations and correcting the path of a trail on one at about 1:00AM on a Saturday morning. I tried to hide it but it was too late.

She said if I don't stop she's gonna take the kids and leave. What can I do? I'm so ashamed....

maple, yes, they are very durable, but as garfum mentioned, we inadvertantly got some DEET on ours and it made the printing come off the map. the thing i like about the map carrier idea is that you wouldnt have to dig it out everytime & unfold it & refold it cuz you just fold it so the area yer in is visible & tuck it into this heavy duty ziplock type thingy with straps to hook it onto yer pack. a local outdoors store here has 3 or 4 different sizes, starting @ around $12. i am gonna get one!

VIVA LA MAPS!

I downloaded and printed out a section of a topo map from topozone.com and was surprised at how good it looked.

topozone, home printed maps are great and cheap, too. You don't worry about trashing it. I put mine in a ziplock, folded to show the section I am on and in my front pants pocket. The bonus is using the same mapes online trip logs and planning.

Disclaimer-USGS maps have some errors.

I had people tell me that you need a really good printer for these maps, but my cheapo Lexmark did a pretty good job with it. Good enough anyway. I wish I tried it sooner.

Thanks to skully for the warm welcome. And thanks to nowslimmer for the om recommendation. Unfortunately om and I have already shared our collective dismay at how much we each shelled out. I just bought three packets though.

Bitpusher - I feel your pain man! 2 weeks ago my wife came in and asked what I had been doing for the last two hours - I knew that "Following the Appalachian Trail through Georgia on Mapquest (at level 1 zoom)" would not sound healthy - so I just said "looking at maps." Which still resulted in a pretty severe eye roll.

Well, at least I don't have to worry about that particular problem. I've seen G00SE's map collection, it's every bit as extensive as mine. Now he's working on getting me hooked on guidebooks. You'll know if he's been successful, I'll be the one to start the support group for that one.

Compass my not work to well in that area. There's iron in those mountains. I never tried in that area, but in other parts of the ADK's, near old iron mines, I have had my compass needle point south. Still it’s a good idea to have a map and compass.

My passion for maps manifests itself in a decorating project for the basement family room. I will attempt to create a lodge effect enhanced by the use of topos and gear as decorative accessories!! That will also keep everything organized and close at hand.

ORIG POST:

my husband and myself once went to Marthas Vineyard MASS. we stayed at an old captians house. and in the entrance way he had put up all his maps of all the places he had visited with his family on his boat. i stood there for hours looking at all the places he went to.
