Are you going dayhiking in the Cats Sunday?

i'm the opposite of you two on this one. i like the shorter days. it is some kind of mental thing with me i think. when it starts getting dark earlier it makes me feel good. probably because it signals fall is here and winter is not too far behind. they are my two favorite seasons. i love turning the clocks back, hate turning them ahead. i don't think there is a nicer season on this planet than fall in bradford county pennsylvania (that's where i grew up). unfortunately, that is all memories for now. could be worse though, i could not have those memories. i can also be in the blue ridge mountains in two hours and fall is nice there too.

Yes Rich, I am hoping to meet up with MSilver and his friend on Sunday morning (on time for a first!) for hiking the Catskills.

Baume66, I actually get depressed in February because I can't take all that darkness. I pretty much love all of the seasons, but I like to hike best in the fall and winter. I've never done much in the way of winter sports before so maybe getting out more will help me get past the lost sunlight issue.

I do like the fall, winter season and it's my favorite for hiking. I just wish the daylight was longer for doing outdoor activities. July and August are my least favorite seasons for hiking and I rarely hike in those months.

BTW, where is your Catskills trip report? Is it a ghostly figment that I can't spot? I hiked with MSilver and two friends up in the Catskills on Sunday, and now all my muscles and a few bones too, are crying for mercy! That place is way cool!

Lyndy - It's there, kind of. I didn't do a full trip report last night, I was too tired. Like you, my bones and muscles ache! The route I did was a real buttkicker. Search below for Pseudosolo Catskills Trip Report..

CM - Call in sick for a few days and head out to Maine and join us! :-)

LyndyS

It should be OK in a few days, I hope. There's a sharp pain on the inner left knee when I walk on it. It's my own fault for pushing big gears that hard with not enough warm up. A little overtraining is the cause too and I should have stayed off the bike that day. Yeah, those climbs in the Cats will do a job on the legs. You had nice clear skies for views.
richb

I'm psyched though. We had some good elevation gain and I was breathing better than usual, so the running is paying off. But my legs were like jello after a while of climbing up those slate cliffs. I can't imagine doing that with a full overnight pack. I could barely fit through some spaces with the Shasta cinched down tight and carrying just food, water, first aid and bad weather clothes. Even then the pack got caught occasionally. But it felt great! I really am happy with the pack.

I just checked out the pictures that Msilver posted from your hike. It did look steep, but that probably wasn't the narrow part of the trail. That's great that you like the pack. I would think that it would be challenging hiking up any of those climbs in the Cats with a full pack. Your training hikes are paying off.

We caught Lyndy S driving @ 75 mph on the NY State Thruway Sunday morning. Lyndy also knows a lot about Italian pasta meals. If anyone is ever near Kingston NY (exit 19 off the Thruway), ask the ticket takers at the exit toll both how to get to Carmine's in Kingston for outstanding Italian food at a great price.

What? Doesn't everyone drive @75 on the thru-way?

I couldn't drive that fast in the dark on the way back, though. Can't see well enough, so I drove 65. :)

That new Subaru of Lyndy's goes real fast. And she drives with such intense concentration! My my! If you pull in front of her and get your dog to smile at her out the back window, Lyndy might slow down that new Outback Wagon.

Lyndy,

My friend Paul Hogan could pull up next to you with his LL Bean Outback, blowin' the horn and waving his hat and knife, and you wouldn't notice anything but the road ahead.

One thigh where I had gotten a charley horse and my arms from pulling myself up are still sore. That was the toughest hike I've done yet. But I am hooked. The Catskills are much nicer than I had thought. MSilver and I talked about doing winter hikes there, sleeping in our respective Subarus rather than backpacking.

Lyndy, Hilleberg sent me their new 2002 catalog last week. It's double the size of the 2001. They asked if I would like to submit photos or comments about the Nallo to possibly be used on their website. So maybe you'll be getting one too. I like the 2001 Nallo better. 2002 has a lower roof and lighter fabric that's only 1.3 ounces per yard compared to 2.3 for the 2001. Now I need to get some pictures in some wild winter storm this year.

Hey wouldn't that be the coolest!

Oh but where are we going to get snowy weather from? It is like August here today. I know! In Maine! Do they want Pennsy, Artex and Fritz doing stupid human tricks next to the tent? Or maybe something a little more GQish? Heeheehee, maybe you have some good winter pics of the Nallo, Rich? I don't have any yet of mine.

I live in the Catskills
Well, I haven't hiked in a while due to my wife's illness, but took a long one yesterday. Went from Alder Lk to Balsam Lake Mt & up the fire tower. Nice trail thru meadows & hardwoods. 3/4's thru you can see Balsam Lk Mt fire tower on the next ridge. Came out at dark, in the rain & fog and had to walk 8 mi back to my car along the road. I have blisters on top of blisters.
