One kid we took was not the most ambitious hiker, and we had to take turns carrying his backpack down the Chimney Pond trail when we left. Recently, my nephew celebrated his 21st birthday, and my sister pointed out that boy's facebook post to my nephew: "Hey man, just wanted to wish you a happy birthday, probably been 10 years since the last time I did that. I still vividly remember our trip up Katahdin one year for your birthday. I was pretty slow and not used to it but that sparked my interest in hiking and now I've done a decent portion of the AT in Maine. That was from slowing down too much right before a sharp turn. I landed in a nice, soft bed of wild roses (thorns!) with lots of happily buzzing yellowjackets (no stings!) checking me out. I did get a few hugs from some passing trees, and one I had to hug right back. It was after a double uphill, with a sharp turn to the right at the top. I lost momentum right at the end of that, and had to grab the tree to keep from falling over. I grabbed hard enough with my nails to send bark bits flying. I bonked near the end and had to walk some of it, but ended up getting back on the bike because of all the poison ivy. HPM thinks we did about 4 miles, which doesn't sound like much but I have zip for endurance right now. I don't intend to ride another trail until the padded shorts come in though. No problem for the front wheel but they grab the back wheel and try to stop me or pitch me to one side. What HPM referred to as "whoop-de-dos" (think basis for a pump track) were a lot of fun. ride 'em right and you don't have to pedal at all. Steering a 29er is something else though. I have to relearn how to turn a bike for sure.” 10:01:40 AM 7/18/11 “good lord, it sucked getting up today... Yesterday was hockey playoffs - because so many games this season had to be rescheduled, the entire playoffs were played yesterday. As a result, I ended up playing in three games (we lost in the championship). I thought I was in relatively decent shape, but just about everything hurts today.
