Since I was awake at 3:30AM yesterday, and 4:15 today, I'm in desparate need of a diet coke, but I don't think its the caffiene I need, I simply like the carbonation and taste. Nothing new here. Waiting for the weather to get cooler.” 5:02:07 PM 9/23/09 “*waves hello*” 6:53:30 PM 9/23/09 “Good Morning!!!!!!!! Then again, she could have been too warm from all the running around chasing cats this morning. I hope that's all it is for her, and just allergies for me. Hope everyone is doing well and has a great day.” 5:05:14 AM 9/25/09 “Afternoon, everyone! Here's a funny thing that happened at MIT: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/09/a_paper_chase_a.html” 12:10:51 PM 9/27/09 “good morning!!!! ...hope everyone had a fun weekend....I was sick :(...but I may live...” 3:39:27 AM 9/28/09 “Hey ever buddy. I am verry hongry cuz we did not get no suppers lats nite cuz my daddy pats out with beers on the cowch. Mebbe I will yell in the windo like some buddy is here so he will wake up and fix brekfuts.” 4:24:57 AM 9/28/09 “Found a new mountain to climb this weekend. Watched a lot of football (with wife, not drinking buddies, so no pats out). Great to be back.” 6:39:49 AM 9/28/09 “Hope your daddy is okay, Sarabelle. Too many beers could make him very sick. I've got 4 new fish; 2 baby koi; not prettiest things, but you can tell from their color markings that they're going to change a lot as they grow. That's what I'm looking forward to. I got a "freebie" at the koi breeders' farm; a shiner that somehow got harvested along with the koi. He's cute. I also got a baby "mickey mouse" platy at the pet store for free; they were just going to flush him (can't sell the babies) so they just gave him to me. He's maybe half an inch long. My father in law is up here for the weekend and part of this week; we invited him over for sinner tonight, totally forgetting we have a girl scout meeting from 6 to 7 pm. Oy. Time to reschedule.” 7:10:41 AM 9/28/09 “We put another wall up on the chicken coop Saturday, and Sunday night I tried to catch the damn roosters...tonight I'll try waiting until they go to sleep...” 9:33:59 AM 9/28/09 “Watch out for spurs, Twig.” 10:06:10 AM 9/28/09 “Long handled fish nets work great...even in a garage:)” 10:07:39 AM 9/28/09 “I'm jine - I'm fine. Good morning everybuddy!” 10:39:34 AM 9/28/09 “yawn.... is it really time?” 1:48:25 AM 9/29/09 “But....I don't wanna get up....watched episodes 5,6 & 7 of True Blood last eve....addicting..... ...I hope everyone has a great day!!!!! ..mmm...coffeeeee.....” 3:09:04 AM 9/29/09 “I'm up. Time to break out the undershirts under the fleecy jammies for Evie. I just wish she could sleep under a blanket, I'm tired of waking up because she's cold. I'm off to school early, I've got a TON to do and yet another meeting after school. I hope my day in the computer lab with the kids goes smoothly. Have a good one.” 3:36:46 AM 9/29/09 “treebait wrote "My father in law is up here for the weekend and part of this week; we invited him over for sinner tonight" "sinner?" What kinda activities are involved? :-)” 3:42:45 AM 9/29/09 “Dinner, ya dirty old man! Actually, I have no idea how old you are. Didn't sleep worth beans last night; The area just under my right ear is intensely painful, because I slept with my knuckles pressed in right there this weekend. Hurts along the top of my neck, behind my ear, and in the hinge of my jaw. A hand warmer makes a great tiny heating pad, though. The weathermen said it would stay in the mid 50's here last night/ this morning. Not! It's 46 outside. I love it! Laurel, however, does not. Poor little Florida girl is wearing her fleece right now, waiting for me to take her to school.” 4:15:57 AM 9/29/09 “On today's agenda is to try and find a BIG MAMA winter coat at the salvation army (wish me luck!).Winter's coming quick. 57° inside this morning. I do believe that some baking might help the situation. And there's the dentist apt (horror) and yoga (lovely). And now I'm going to go pin my child down and fix her hair for picture day.” 5:12:57 AM 9/29/09 “"Long handled fish nets work great...even in a garage:)” Nimblefoot 11:07:39 AM 9/28/09 I thought of that - Ariana has one, no idea where it is...I've got to catch them soon, they are so noisy...” 9:32:29 AM 9/29/09 “Hello, folks. Enjoy your day. Thanks, Sassafras. It was the TT Injured reserve thread for which I was looking. But it did not have the post I'm interested in finding. It was a post by Chili of my daughter's e-mail telling the treatments that I was receiving during my second hospital stay in May. I guess I'll have to check with Chili or my daughter. last edited: 9/29/09 9:24:33 AM” 9:50:19 AM 9/29/09 “Here is the thread you were looking for Nowslimmer http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/20644,-1.php” 11:12:46 AM 9/29/09 “57, yikes. Our lows went form 68 to 58 in a snap. Supposed to be in the 40's for lows. Highs are still around 80. Pool temp is still at 80 too. Might as well give up the ghost, store the solar blanket and turn off the solar panels and just let it cool off. That way I can go to running the pump an hour or two instead of 7-8. Good luck with the coat hunt, what was your low?” 12:00:17 PM 9/29/09 “tb - did yall drive to Yellowstone? If so, how long did it take?” 1:19:28 PM 9/29/09 “We flew into Jackson, Wy., drove through Teton, to some "ranch" or other joint that was a glorified gas station, We then took bombardiers into Yellowstone. I really, really want to go back. Especially in the winter. I just went back and looked at all of my photos. I have lots of geyser feature photos. Lots and lots.” 1:36:08 PM 9/29/09 “We've talked in the past about how we need to try and visit a NP each year. The current Ken Burns doc. has brought that back to the forefront. Airfare for 5 is pretty dang high. Driving would be an exercise in patience, but was curious what yall had done. I want our next big trip to be a drive to Shenandoah, Gettysburg, then DC and loop back home. I want this for spring break, she wants Disney. Probably a moot point until the economy changes, but need to start planning relatively soon just in case. Yellowstone/Tetons 2011 would be awesome though. Google maps says 29 hour drive time. Yikes! last edited: 9/29/09 1:51:07 PM” 1:46:30 PM 9/29/09 “We had airline tickets and lodge reservations reserved right after Christmas 2007. The holiday relative wars are really, really bad.” 2:05:12 PM 9/29/09 “dayhiker, i drive (in my little toyota echo) with my three boys for ten or eleven hours/day without too many problems. in fact, we've had only one major incident in the last eight or ten trips. the secret is getting a handheld game system for each kid - like the psp or dsi - but make sure they have earphones & a mute button and a recharging station. a portable dvd player and mp3s are great too as long as all three kids have earphone access. we use a splitter when necessary. and stopping to let the dog have a potty break&run every couple hours helps with the energy levels. or you could just drug them all and have a very peaceful and relaxing drive ;)” 8:39:39 PM 9/29/09 “the secret is getting a handheld game system for each kid - like the psp or dsi - but make sure they have earphones & a mute button and a recharging station. a portable dvd player and mp3s are great too wow....that would have been GREAT when my kids were little & we made the many treks back and forth Alabama to Ohio....when they were really young, I drove at night ..and listened to "oldies"...lol...my kids' friends were amazed when my kids knew all the words to all those old songs...lol... it's Wed...wooo hooo...3 more days of work this week.... ..I hope everyone is well!!!! ...hugs... ...need coffee!!!!” 3:28:35 AM 9/30/09 “Listening to oldies music while traveling brings back a lot of memories for me, Div. That's what my parents listened to while traveling. That, along with disgusting amounts of the "Statler Brothers." ;P” 4:17:13 AM 9/30/09 “The kids and I were always able to entertain ourselves while on long distance trips. One of the best was to stuff our nostrils and cheeks with cotton and make pig faces at the motorists we passed along the way:)” 5:31:09 AM 9/30/09 “We just didn't take long trips as a kid. We'd drive the 6-7 hours to my aunts in Pensacola, but that was about it. The thought of a big trip out west by car sounds a little intimidating. I can see driving for two straight days and then just being too tired to take it all in. I guess leave Thur afternoon, drive through the night and see how far you can get on Friday. Crash Friday night, finish the drive and have Sat-Thur in the park, repeat on the way home and get home a day or so early to catch back up on sleep. That would be an adventure for sure.” 5:35:08 AM 9/30/09 “Maybe the DC trip I mentioend above should be the first run at a long trip and then follow up the next year with lessons learned for a big one to Yellowstone or the G.C. That might work. Thus far our longest drive has been the 8-9 hours to Disney. The beach and Smokies are both 4-5 hrs so that's baby stuff.” 5:37:51 AM 9/30/09 “I agree with you. Our 'long trips' were from Oklahoma City to Minneapolis so the kids could visit their mother. I wouldn't have wanted any longer. I usually bathed them the night before and dressed them in their blanket sleepers. Very early the next morning I'd put them in the car while still asleep. I would often be able to drive 100-200 miles before they woke up. We'd stop for breakfast and peace would (pretty much) reign until mid-afternoon. Good memories:)” 5:54:46 AM 9/30/09 “We went back and forth to Colorado and kansas 2x a year as kids. We played Auto bingo, the license plate game, the alphabet game, read and mom always got us each one of those invisble ink books before the trip. Abby won't watch movies while traveling. We play Auto Bingo (cracker barrel sells the same cards I had as a kid 2 for $4), the alphabet game, read and I always make sure I get her some type of new activity book for the trip. She also gets to drive nice long distances, mainly to Kansas these days but she's done the 22 hours to Colorado twice too. The library has fabulous books on cd for kids too. Those are a big hit. We'll be headed out for the 14 hours to my grandma's within 2 weeks and will head to Atlanta for Thanksgiving in November. The ride is part of the fun.” 6:59:39 AM 9/30/09 “hillbillyhkr - Thanks.” 9:42:10 AM 9/30/09 “What's all this electronic entertainment stuff? I road tripped a lot as a kid and our entertainment was called books. We also played auto bingo, I Spy, and Mad Libs. But we all read a lot. We always went to the bookstore and the library before a road trip and stocked up. I don't think I'll be doing the video thing with our kids. Just personal preference.” 9:47:56 AM 9/30/09 “I love mad libs, but tire of explaining over and over again what a noun, adverb and adjective is. Plus it's hard to write and read and drive all at once. ;)” 1:19:13 PM 9/30/09 “we drove to southwest TX from GA, and AL. It would be 18-20 hours. Dad would drive straight through, Mom would stop half way. When we were little I would read the entire trip, my brother was known to sleep through the entire state of LA, and TX” 1:48:26 PM 9/30/09 “Reading in the car made me blow chunks as a kid. I would sleep as much as possible. We did play 20 questions ad nauseum. It turns out, it's the same drive to Yellowstone as it is to Yosemite with a side trip to Grand Canyon. With gas at $3 it's about $750. By summer of 2011 when this thing might be possible there's no telling what it'll be. Fllight from BHM to Vegas on SW was about $1300, but you still have to rent a car. Interesting to look into all of this stuff.” 2:01:55 PM 9/30/09 “I grew up on the road (check out the National Park thread for details on that). It was just what Navy people like us did. I spent a lot of time reading, coloring and staring out the window at the country going by. We spent days at a time on the road so all the car games got old for us after one trip. I used to spend a lot of time looking at highway maps and plotting our progress with a highlighter. Dad used to goof around with us a lot too. Mom and Dad still have that road map. I'd like to have that map some day. These days kids have a ton more entertainment options in that car than we did as a kid. Those with the old standbys will do the trick.” 2:11:16 PM 9/30/09 “I enjoyed reading that post on the NP thread. We just didn't do that stuff as a kid. I wish we had.” 2:14:33 PM 9/30/09 Jump to Page << prev
