Just got back from taking Laurel to the dentist. I hate having to drug her for these appointments, but if I don't she's trying to get out of the room, let alone the chair. She had a filling, sealant, and 2 extractions. Boy, those teeth still had long roots. She's singing to one of the cats right now, with a big wad of gauze still in her mouth, over the holes in her jaw.

Nothing like True North's Pistachio crisps for breakfast. These things are evil good!

We're finally getting a little rain today. I'd rather we had a week of this since it's been so dry. The clay our front has shrunk and at least an inch away from the concrete driveway and sidewalk.

We are in our fourth day of rain. I have 4 inches of water standing in my backyard in the low spot.

The weatherman would only say it "won't quit in 6 hours and won't rain more than 6 days".

I think we need a new weatherman.

tb - if you have clay that bad then in drought, and I'm not making this up, but you should water around the foundation of your house. The shrink and swell action expansive clay can screw up a house over time.

Not around the foundation, just in the upper end of the yard, close to the road. Our yard sweeps down from the road, to our house, then the back yard slopes down a little more before plummeting down the "dropoff."

Morning. Went to Oktoberfest last night, the only one outside of Germany sanctioned by Munich. Good times!

Today, we're waiting for my folks and sister to arrive for an early dinner/late lunch thing.

I also have to decide on my research project for my thesis by midnight tonight. My mom asked what ideas I had. I told her my only idea was that I had no interest in doing it at all. That'll make it tough.

2 straight nights with a 3 y.o. in the bed for a few hours due to thunder and lighting. I'm ready for this April weather to leave us. It's been so wet for the last 3 weeks that I have several places where my concrete on the drive and around bad is getting green from algae. It was just pressure washed in the spring and has been clean until now. Very weird. This is Alabama NOT Oregon.

I heard that during the Auburn football game Sat night they had 4" in 1 hour. The game was delayed about an hour.

It rained off and on all weekend but I still got to build my stone wall. I bought 11 tons of stone in April. The flagstone went a little farther than I thought it would with maybe 1T leftover. I can use most of the rest on paths here and there and I have someone to take the rest off my hands. The stack stone I was using for landscaping edging went way more than predicted. I built a planter for a jap maple and then did about a 30' long x 16"-20" tall wall at our turnaround in the driveway. That's what I got done over the weekend. I still have about 1T left. I have to get rid of this stuff. If I use anymore then it will just wind up looking bad.

Here's the planter with flagstone and firepit in the far background. The brick thing is a curved bench. Lights will go on top of the columns eventually.

Here's a better view of the flag with planter in far background.

Nice.

Laurel spent the weekend at camp Okeneechee (sp?) out near lake Lure; It rained the entire time, an I just watched a few weather reports about flask flooding and landslides to our west. Yikes.

On a similar note, one of the adults said there was a lot of extra traffic out there; parts of "Dirty Dancing" were filmed at lake Lure, and there was a memorial for Patrick Swayze there this weekend.

Very nice Dayhiker!
Chili, I found a formula online when I did my patio. I ended up w/ about ten stones leftover. Since it's like a puzzle you do want some extras.

No work today. I gave my one apt away so I get the day off, woot! Going on a walk, gonna clean house and having six ladies over for dinner. Maybe going to sell a rifle too so Birch can buy a new one, perhaps do some painting at church.
We also got rain all night. Needed it! I may get to walk in the rain today. =)

I think the rule of thumb was 1t per 100 sf. I had about 600sf. I also got extra for some other folks. That may have complicated it.

On the stack stone they said around 35sf per ton. I repeatedly made sure I was clear on that. I described that I was using it for landscaping edging and would be standing it up. I asked that if it averaged 6" high then that would mean 70lf, correct? Yes. What no one factored in was stack stone is laid flatwise and not vertical so all of their rule of thumbs were wrong. My secretary probably took 1ton home of the stack. I had enough to do the planter above and the wall I mentioned and I still have 1t leftover. Ouch.

As far as laying the stone, just time consuming. I probably placed about 6c.y. of sand first. That's probably 18000# or so, then did the stone. I played with various firepit ideas and just wound up going simple. I wound up not using the foundation I placed last winter and just came up with something that would involve NOT taking out the concrete. After hitting it with a sledge for about an hour I decided I needed a plan B. I have a close up of the pit I need to get off the camera and post. I wish I'd taken it before I actually used the pit, but oh well.

afternoon!

I'm so sick of chasing chickens, LOL...what was I thinking!

I let the little buggers out of their spacious 50x50 fence and they take advantage...up until this past weekend they were no trouble at all, now they think they can go wherever they please.

One of my neighbors said she loves hearing the roosters (yay!) and another doesn't mind. That's two of flour. I like to watch them, but they have taken to chasing the hens...funny thing is, the roosters are both Plymouth Rocks (black and white) and there are 4 rock hens and 6 Rhode Island Red hens...the roosters only chase the Reds. They are much prettier than the rocks, but who knew a rooster would notice...
The turkeys have interesting little personalities...though I blame them for teaching the chickens to roost on top of the coop - helps them escape to the trees and then to the neighbors lawn...

Sad news.
I've been forgetting to let you know the news from Melbourne, Florida:
The pool hall, where I hung-out, was closed, while I was in the hospital last Spring. It was just about a landmark in Melbourne.
Now I don't know what to do every day!

The new owner of the business, as of August, 2008, wanted to remodel, sell some of the tables and put in a bunch of machines in about one third of the place. But the building's owner would not pay for half of the changes and would not approve the structual changes.

That stinks, Paul.

Apparently Laurel was a bit of a showoff this past weekend, at GS camp Okeneechee. I know I'm butchering the name. During one of the brief breaks between rainstorms, the girls were out hiking, and Laurel was pretty much running circles around all of the girls. Everyone but Laurel was wearing tennis shoes, that caked up in mud and got slippery. Laurel wore a pair of waterproof (and apparently mud proof) pull-on boots with lug soles. Good traction! Li'l hikin' girl showed them how it's done!

Another uncle diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He's not eating much, and is currently walking with a walker, when he does get up. Not good.

My mom had blood clots in her lungs a few weeks ago, and had an ultrasound of her leg today because she had some pain. She's also scheduled for a CT scan of her abdomen on Thursday, just to see what's there. This is her second brother with pancreatic cancer, and she's a bit freaked out.

Prayers, please. You know the health issues I have, as well.

The poultry palace burned to the ground last January. All who survived the wolf attack also survived the fire. Homes were found for all, but Coyotes ate all in one 'refuge'. Those I gave to my daughter have done better in that they've become pets, though I'm not sure if that's better or worse.

I just read the entire poultry palace thread, what a riot...

My chickens would go into the coop every night until the turkeys corrupted them...now they sleep (and poop) on the roof and in the trees...
Now that it's getting cooler, they are starting to go back in the coop.
