I just want to crawl back in bed. Ugh. It's one of those "if you want to function ingest 3 espresso double shots" kind of days. This afternoon I'm taking Laurel to pick out what fish she wants. I had an esophagus dilation 10 days ago and my doctor did a biopsy on the back of my throat. I found out Friday that it's cancer so he'll be removing a coin size piece of tissue in the attempt to get rid of it. I'm looking at at least one night in the hospital and looks like I'll need a feeding tube as well. It sucks because I was just eating well for a couple of weeks. While I was in the OR to get the dilation he installed a voice prosthesis so I have a new voice. It doesn't sound as good as I had hoped, but it's still sore and maybe will sound better as everything heals. It doesn't help that he shoved his hand down my throat Friday to feel around for the lesion. That hurt when he stretched everything.” 5:28:21 AM 8/31/09 “Yikes, RichB. Having a new voice is different after three years of using a machine to talk, but my voice isn't as good as I thought it would be. I answered the phone yesterday and the person on the other end hung up on me when they couldn't understand my voice. I have no clue who it was and they were looking for my sister and she doesn't live here anyway. I thought I'd try my new voice on the phone and it didn't work out as well as I had hoped. Friday he's going to change the size of the prosthesis when I'm in the OR so maybe that will improve my voice. Although with my throat cut up, I don't think I'll be using it until everything heals. They gave me seven patients to see today. They think if they allow for no drive time and all seven fit into an eight hour day on paper then it's a win. FAIL” 4:27:54 AM 9/07/09 “Good morning, it's gloomy out, but they only forecasted a few sprinkles. I had surgery on Friday to remove some cancer on the back of my throat. He didn't have to cut my neck open to get at it so that worked out well. I was able to come home on Saturday and can eat okay so I don't have a feeding tube which is even better. He found more cancer on my upper palate so had to remove the uvula and a small surrounding area on the roof of my mouth so that's gone now. That's the little piece of tissue that hangs down in the back of your mouth. It helps with speech and keeps food from going up your nose while swallowing, but I haven't noticed any difference with it gone. It was great that he spotted the problem and got rid of it. He said he got good margins on it all. I came home with a new and better fitting voice prosthesis too so I'm hoping once everything heals my voice will be better. Pain isn't too bad for all the cutting he did and I even went for a bike ride yesterday. Despite another lesion being there at least he got rid of it and things went much better than I expected.” 5:58:48 AM 9/07/09 “Divinity - CassErole. :) Nigal, good luck today.
