I had a great drive over. 2 Perfect camping days...good sites, not terribly crowded, some wildlife, lovely weather and I did not bite off more than I could chew. The third night I spent in Mackinaw City in a motel near the Machinaw Bridge...I got a superb night picture of the bridge taken from my motel room...I don't think I will be able to post it until I get home...I've always wanted to do that...stay in a motel near the bridge but it has never been practical. After all, my parents live an hour drive from there. But, this time it worked out... It's good to be here...my mother and I make terrible death jokes about preparing our lives for the end. She looks great...her hair came back curly so she no longer needs to get it permed. My Dad has lost 30 pounds and doesn't look so well. We have a family reunion going...my sister and most of her 6 kids, all male, and their wives and kids, are camping 20 minutes south of here. My favorite nephew (another Aquarian) flew in from California to drive up with them. My brother and his wife and kids, in their 20's, plan to come up tonight and are also camping. My sister has her RV and the rest are in tents...if there is a decent place to hang my hammock I'll join them Saturday or Sunday... It would be too much for my parents to have them all here but my mother, in her infinite wisdom, reserved a much sought after shelter in the middle of town for a picnic...that way, we can judge how much hubbub we can handle. My mother asked if I had a support group and I told her about all the cards and surprise CARE packages I have received from my fellow backpackers, most of whom I have never met. I think I have a HUGE support team. It helped bring me out of my depression and get me here... There is no question that getting out, camping again, has meant I have turned the corner. Being outside has always been my touchstone, my lifeline, as it were. I am lucky as we are now entering the best time for camping and I have no time restrictions! How good is that! We sewed a spider web onto a foam sheet and attached a foam sticker spider, then stuck a pipe cleaner through the top and made a door knob hanger. It was really cute, took away some of their (stupid in MI) fears of spiders and counted toward a patch. I'll send you a picture if you're interested. Everything we needed came from the dollar store. GSA is weird, but the Scouts themselves are great. I'm leading a troop again this year. Might be my last year for awhile though. I got some SCAREY news Sunday that will be affecting things greatly. Also, I have found legal papers to sue them on any attempt to build anything across the street from my place. It is limited to trailers and factory-constructed homes only. When they wanted to construct a county senior-center with a 200-car parking lot across the street, it would not have been legal, either.
