LMAO! Glad I'm not that far north!

My mom's rolling in to town this afternoon, to stay for a few days. I made a pretty good beef stew yesterday; we didn't eat it last night because its one of those things that tastes better after it sits a day or two and simmers into oblivion. THe base is a 80/20 mix of rich beef stock and 3 blind moose merlot, plus fresh bay leaves and thyme, then simmered down 50%. Yummy.

Guess I'd better collect up the rest of the dust kitties before mo gets here. She's pretty critical of house cleanliness. THbbbpt.

brings back memories of bathing out of my metal pot on field maneuvers....fill metal helmet shell with cold water, place on ground, strip naked, bathe out of helmet, pour over head to rinse....

Sounds like HPM's backpacking showers, Chappy, only it was a little aluminum pot rather than a helmet, and not totally naked.

TB, it was a happy day for me when I realized my mom's vision was too poor to be critical of my housekeeping anymore. Now she only rants about "fat" people. I guess she can still see them, lol.

My mom doesn't dare rant about fat people any more, since she figured out she's one too.

She's bringing up a quilt that HPM and I designed, and she sewed and quilted together, for a some friends of ours who are having a baby soon. The baby's chosen name? Fenris Tyr. With such a mythologically heavy name we opted to design the quilt based on the four elements. The end result is pretty damn cool imo. Its all in batik fabrics.

Isn't life great?!”

Don't think that's too good, Chappy, if you're seated on the porch. The metal roof is likely grounded and can easily attract lightning. Lightning frequently sends out lots of spurs and one spur could overheat your coffee.

But I guess you know that and are seated inside the house. Enjoy the storm.

Have a great day, everyone.

Afternoon. We have heat back now. The pump on the boiler has been leaking for a week and they finally came to fix it today. Had the heat off all morning, but its a good thing its warm today. WIsh I could get out for a walk but my day is all screwed up from the very late repair man.

Other than that, things are good here. G and I spent 20 minutes with the calendar last night trying to find ONE night available for a date. It was either this Friday, or in late February. Good times, good times.

Did I tell you I have another long term sub job coming up? 5th grade math. Not my favorite, but I suppose I can handle it! Should start sometime in April.

Have a good day, everyone.

48 today, tilt! Tonight it's gonna snow, turn everything to ice and go down into the teens. Nothing like a 30+ degree drop in a matter of hours! The school superintendent was roaming the halls of the high school today discussing an ice day for tomorrow. Let's hope that happens!

45 right now, at quarter to 8. Strange weather we're having.

Heck, our low last night was 48, the high was 64. Way too warm for this time of year.

The quilt Mom made is incredible. I made beef stew for dinner (I've been on a quest to make the perfect beef stew for 10 years now)with biscuits and tupelo honey. Yummy!

Did you vote yesterday? I forgot! I thought voting was in November. Don't know whether to blame Bush or the climate warming.

Just had a sweet roll with lots of raisins on it and plenty of sweet glazing on the top. Yum, yum. Even the decaf tastes good this morning here at the Resource Cafe.

Lots of high winds in central Kentucky last night. Trees down all over the place, and traffic lights all messed up. Some flashing, some out, some turned around backwards by the winds.
That, and one of the major bridges here is dropping concrete on the cars passing below due to freezing and thawing....

Oh boy, took a walking loop round the neighborhood. Dog refused to go with me this morning, acted liek the ground hurt her when I let her out to poop.

Didn't stay out as long as usuall. Needed another layer on my legs but the top was all fine. had to walk half blind without my glasses, they kept fogging then freezing so into the coat pocket they went.

-3f at the east window thermometer this morning. Only a slight breeze (at this point), so it's not bad. Should be in the 20's by the weekend and we're now in the 2nd half of winter (half-time being the two days of 40's this past weekend).

Went to town to check some plumbing parts yesterday. On the way home I hit a patch of skating rink quality ice and slid right off the road at about 20mph. Walked to a neighbors house (the guy whose ducks Freckles killed) and called the tow truck. At first it looked like there was zero damage to the rental, but once removed from the ditch, there is a small piece of plastic broke from beneath the bumper; probably a $2,000,000 part. They say these things come in three's, so there is the deer hitting episode on New Years Eve, followed by the frozen pipes and now the running in the ditch situation. I'm ready for spring:)

On the cheery note, my HS basketball team, the mighty Webster Tigers, beat Mata's St. Croix Falls team last week...a mere 45 years after I last played.

Nimblefoot...I would LOVE to have breakfast with you but....

-18 with a windchill factor of -40F...I told them at work I wouldn't be coming in because
1) our furnace is acting up and makes so much noise sometimes that it keeps me awake...gonna try and get it fixed today...

2) it's Bill's birthday and I want to make him breakfast...he came home from the bar at 1:50 last night...it took him 45 minutes to make it in the house...I kept hearing the truck motor as he hit the gas...not sure what was going on but at least he made it in across the ice...he's now shouting in his sleep...something about hot wings and hot chili...I doubt HE'LL enjoy the cold sun when he wakes up!

3) I think I have a very low tire...it deflates when temps drop below zero...I may have to pump it up some before I can drive it...nothing I wanted to do before daylight...

4) baby, it's COLD outside...

Sometimes I don't want a cappuccino, don't want a latte..just want COFFEE...this is one of those mornings...

How wonderful! It's only -1 this morning! I can live with that
AND with the knowledge that a warm-up is on it's way. I got the furnace fan fixed yesterday so the furnace only rattles in a normal way, which is livable. Filled the low tire, didn't slip on the ice before I got some of it covered with sand and salt...amusing side note...years ago an animal burrowed just outside our basement wall and found the basement a good place to kick all the excess foundation sand...well, it's still there on part of the basement so I brought a couple dustpans up to throw on the ice...recycle, recycle...

Interesting breakfast this morning fried egg on rice with alfredo sauce poured over the whole thing...quite good...gotta be inventive when eating bread is difficult...

Going into work today...sigh...

Nimble, you can get a squirrel out of your basement by making a trail of peanut butter right out an open door. I used that method two years ago and it worked great.

We've had 1.08 inches of rain overnight, so that's good. Unfortunately the pond bottom drains (open to the air for now) are now filled with muddy water. I knew I should have blocked them off. >:(
