I always wear long pants hiking so I should be okay even if I brush up against poison ivy. I hope to avoid it entirely though. I'm too afraid of ticks and Lyme disease to wear shorts even though they are more comfortable when it's hot out. A good steroid cream without it being too strong is something called TMC cream, short for Triamcinolone Acetonide cream in 0.1%. I use it for small skin rashes that break out on me once in awhile. It stops them fast and leaves your skin very soft. That sounds like a terrible case of poison ivy. You don't want to get the TMC cream in you eyes or anything else for that matter. Aside from the small rashes I get, I've used it for an allergic reaction to CT scan dye, but that time it was so bad the rash was almost all over my body so I had to go on oral steroids for a week. I've used it on a graft vs. host rash after my bone marrow transplant and it worked for that too. My dermatologist said it's a good all around steroid cream.
