Good morning.

Sassafras - Whenever you post your stories here, please provide pictures. Thanks. Now,would you tell us that story again, please.

In my neighborhood they have blocked the street with cones until they put in something stronger. Now a cell phone repair company (It usedto be Nokia.) has an exit from their parking lot blocked so that they cannot enter the trailer park directly. They can only turn and exit toward a major street. It definitely has cut down on the traffic past my place. I don't mind taking a longer route to get out of the Park.

Two evenings ago I had words with two guys in the field across the street from my place. They were hitting golf balls in the direction of my car and trailer. First I had tried to call the police, but I could not locate their telephone number in a new telephone book. For 911 it said, "Emergency Only!"

Well, these two guys claimed they could not hit a ball as far as my car, or my neighbor's car. They were using sand wedges, but were hitting them off a makeshift wooden T-platform. (I don't believe people t-off with a sand wedge.) I told them that if the ball hit a stone, etc., it could bounce across the street.

I suggested that they go a block further to a larger lot where other folks practiced at their game. Well, they got huffy about it. They were lucky I did not know the park rules or I might have elevated the conversation to another level. They claimed they lived in the Park, had hit balls there numerous times and in the next lot behind some trees. Well, I let it drop without pointing out that next lot was posted, "No Trespassing!"

I found out the rules prohibit hitting golf balls anywhere within the Park.
They were pissed, when I copied the number from their car plates. I felt like I should have beat the crap out of them, but in a way I felt sorry. They were old men, probably 60-65, and did not look capable of anything but noise. So I felt somewhat sorry for them. So I followed the first rule from class to avoid trouble, if possible. I am going to report them to the Park Management today, mainly because of the additude they took.

Have a great day.

Good morning.

My Palm tree had a hair cut. It looks naked! Only three limbs remain at the top. About 12-branches came down. They were each about 15-18 feet long and had to be cut in 3-4 feet lengths. They have been piled by the street for pick-up on Monday. A few seed/fruit pods were included as well. Those pods can weigh up to 150 pounds each, when ripe.

Older palm tree branches droop as new ones grow straight upward. Eventually they will fall. But, when the winds blow, the drooping branches on my Palm Tree hit my trailer and the trailer behind mine and can do damage. So I trim the tree before trips to protect the buildings. This Palm Tree has been growing about one foot per year higher and a ladder is needed now for the trimming. A cutting blade is mounted at the end of a long, extension pole tool, which is used for the job.

Palm Trees have a noble purpose. They house numerous insects, birds and small animals. This includes squirrels, rats, mice, snakes, Palmetto Bugs, ants and spiders. Their branches are sometimes used for roofing. Dwellings with thatch roofs made from Palm branches are seen frequently in tropical settings. I even lived in one.

Trimming a Palm Tree is work. Workers can charge $30-40 per tree. Some workers climb the trees, while others use special, lift platforms on trucks. Each cut branch is dangerous as it falls. They are heavy and can knock people off ladders, break the ladders, make deep scratches on the head, arms and/or the body, etc. For this job I hired a workman, who was here doing some other jobs for me.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Morning! Four (or five) appointments this morning and then off to the landscape supply company to choose stepping stones, then off to Mom-in-law's old apartment to get the last of her stuff and move it to the Salvation Army, then home to dig in the dirt some more (if there's any dig left in me by then). Slept like a baby last night. Physical labor does that for me. Haven't felt so well rested since January.
The weather is gorgeous here. I already have some sunburn on my cheeks and arms. Have to dig out the suncreen today. =)

Enjoy your Saturday everyone!

Morning

Some twit was repeatedly calling us at 6 am this morning. Ugh. Our phone number moved around quite a bit in the last few years before we received it, that's for darned sure.

We're heading to the local Highland games in a little while, if Laurel will eat her breakfast. It's not looking good. She just doesn't like eating in the morning, like her dad. :P

It's amazing watching the skinless area on my knee heal up quickly. I did some yard work yesterday, thinking it wouldn't bother the rapidly healing wound, but nope, bad idea. I'm still amazed I have so little bruising from that rock loaded cart rolling over my legs like that.

I'm wiped out just READING about your day, Sass...

NS, when I first moved to Goa in India in the 60's there was no part of the coconut palm tree that was not used...I crossed the Panjim River in a boat carved out of one (now there is a bridge)...my first "house" was made completely out of palm...walls and ceiling were woven palm fronds. Our water dipper was a coconut shell on a stick. We ate and drank out of coconut shells. We use specially woven coconut fronds to brush the sand floor...the fibrous inner husk was used to stuff mattresses and pillows...definitely one of the most useful trees on the planet...the local fisherman fished in huge, heavy boats made out of palm...they paddled using palm paddles...and drank toddy, made by tapping the palm tree which has a god-awful smell and a helluva kick, at the end of the day...and, one must add that coconut oil was the only oil we had back then...used it both as suntan oil and to cook with...coconut was also used in many dishes...I also must mention the most dangerous bug there was a centipede that lived in coconut palms...I only saw one once..about 4-6 inches long, bright green with one end a nasty, bright red...ick!

Glad you're healing, treebait...

Cloudy and 56F when I woke up but the sun is beginning to peek through the clouds and it's 60F already...YES!

Be sure to take lots of pics of guys in skirts for the ladies on the Dating Sux thread (and Arclite).

I remember the palmettos in the median of the road into Hilton Head back in the 70s... trimmed as NS described, listing at various angles and propped up with 2x4s nailed to their trunks. A few stores were selling t-shirts with a sketch of such a tree and the caption "I Own A Tree On US 278".

the Chamber of Commerce was not amused.

Mataharihiker - It's amazing how people learn to use what is available. Even bamboo. People up north buy bamboo cane fishing poles. While fishing with one, I never imagined how much larger bamboo could grow. And I used to think that bamboo was a tree. In bamboo patches in Panama, the trees I experienced were 20-30 feet high and the trunks were 8" or more in diameter. Yet, we could cut them down easily with a machete. We used them for fencing and as support timbers in building temporary structures, like pavilions for carnivals and for neighborhood dances. Life can be so interesting, when it is possible to live and work in totally different parts of the world.

I never even realized that bamboo is a gigantic grass. This helps explain Panda Bears eating bamboo

It's raining in Melbourne, Florida. We're getting a lot of showers this dry season!

mARKo - Thanks for letting me know that you'll be arriving in Melbourne on Wed. I've pushed my departure date to Tuesday.

LOL.

Actually, I am pushing to leave for GSMNP on Tuesday. If I don't make it (I usually don't.), you're welcome to join me Wednesday evening. My aikijkutsu class starts at 8 PM. You've seen how "The Texas Ranger" gets attacked by a class of martial arts brutes. You can be "The Texas Ranger!" Wow! This may be our best class ever, with new blood. A Yankee in Redneck territory!

Strange to have someone coming to town at this time of the year. Most people are leaving and heading north. Well, not quite. The tourists keep coming to Florida until after Memorial Day Weekend.

I would invite you to stay here, but I really don't have enough space. My place is just like that of an old man before they take him off to a home. In fact yesterday evening my daughter came by and washed some of the mold and other growth off some of the dishes. And I am trying to get ready for GSMNP.

Are you flying into Melbourne? If so, perhaps I'll be able to greet you at the airport. If you can, e-mail me some of the details of your trip. If I'm still here, I'll be happy to see you.

If communications get fouled, call the Golden Cue at 254-5477 between 11 AM and 12:30 PM. Ask for "Skipper."

Good morning. 'twas a busy week; a couple of days of roofing, a little wood splitting (always, it seems), yard work, plowing, and today will be to install a fence around my new garden (deer proof, I hope). It's good to be outside in nice weather and see the world change on my (and the bank's) property.
