We're doing an office retreat in a month. We're rafting the Chattooga and spending 2 nights at Dillard House in Dillard, GA. They don't really have a common hangout place, but have agreed to let us use a small building for a common area. We're planning on just getting some card tables and dragging some coolers in. I figure we'll play cards and dominoes. Here's where the help comes in. We're bringing poker chips. I think whoever winds up with the most poker chips should get a prize. Any suggestions? I had thought about a restaurant gift cert but one couple lives 90 minutes from the rest of us. We'd have to get a chain gift cert if we went that route. I'd prefer to come up with something creative. I'm thinking the $50-$75 range would be ok. Any thoughts?” 9:29:40 AM 3/26/07 “I need to add that we only have 6 employees. So, there will be 12 folks going since spouses are included. Another thought is that we could do 3 prizes, Fri high score, Sat high score, and combined high score. The Fri/Sat prizes might be more down in the $30 range.” 9:44:29 AM 3/26/07 Everyone's a Winner! “Give everyone a prize. Draw their names out of a hat for each prize. This beats rewarding the leading card players. Everyone will be happy in receiving a gift for attending and for being a company member. BTW, some of the chain restaurants should have outlets near everyone. last edited: 3/26/07 10:11:02 AM” 10:09:40 AM 3/26/07 “They're already getting a prize. We're spending about $500 per couple to do the trip. I'm trying to come up with something extra that's fun. last edited: 3/26/07 10:20:10 AM” 10:14:03 AM 3/26/07 “I don't have any suggestions for prizes, but I can heartily second the Dillard House for the down-home eats!” 10:34:23 AM 3/26/07 “We're eating there Friday night for supper and Sunday morn for breakfast before heading out. Friday we're grabbing lunch somewhere in Atlanta, don't have that one figured out yet, and then Sat night at an Italian place in Clayton, GA. Sat lunch will be riverside on the Chattooga section IV. Class IV, V, and V+ water, here we come.” 10:37:03 AM 3/26/07 “Make up gift baskets Dayhiker. You can do gourmet snacks, champagne, flutes, etc. Maybe a movie goer's basket w/ gift cards for the theater or blockbuster, popcorn, candy all in a big popcorn bowl, maybe a gardening basket with seeds or a greenhouse gift card, gloves and gardener's hand soap in a planter.” 10:50:35 AM 3/26/07 “I like that idea. Buy some wicker picnic baskets and stuff it with stuff. Good idea. Thanks.” 10:52:25 AM 3/26/07 “Glad to help.” 11:45:52 AM 3/26/07 12:18:45 PM 3/26/07 “Hey, I've been thinking about Pekka and LeSubtil. Anyone heard from either of these fine gentlemen lately?” 2:53:44 PM 3/26/07 “I heard from Lesub yesterday. he's doing well, chemo's easiler now, steroids have him puffy but he's keeping busy. Pekka posted a thread today.” 2:56:43 PM 3/26/07 “That CD is certainly location appropriate.” 4:17:07 PM 3/26/07 “dayhiker, how about a gift basket?” 5:06:24 PM 3/26/07 “why are we still "getting up" in the middle of the day?” 5:12:31 PM 3/26/07 “Is there an echo in here? I think I'll do the giftbasket thing.” 6:21:12 AM 3/27/07 “I'm not sure why but I'm at work already! Gotta go get coffee...Morning all!!!” 6:35:12 AM 3/27/07 “Good morning, it's supposed to be 70 degrees here today and looks like a good day to ride the bicycle outside for the first time this year. I've been riding it on a trainer in the house for 2 months, but it'll be nice to ride outside now. last edited: 3/27/07 7:02:15 AM” 7:00:00 AM 3/27/07 “Morning. 90% humidity here. Slept w/ the window open last night. It was good. You all have a good Tuesday!” 7:04:32 AM 3/27/07 Hugs. “Good morning. Look out! Here's comes some even nicer weather. Melbourne, Florida, will be having highs in hte low 80's for the next 8-10 days or so. The closest rain is two days with a 20% chance of showers. Foolish people are leaving this area every day. They hate to let go of northern living. So the Resource Café is becoming a little more quiet. I guess the noisy, unpolite, wild crowd is made of those who are still from out of town, SnowBirds! Enjoy your day. last edited: 3/27/07 7:26:55 AM” 7:23:02 AM 3/27/07 “Good morning all you fine......well, let me begin again........Good morning folks.......it's 61, we had a thunder clap last night, just one, and some light rain, I think...........time to get going and collecting boxes. My wife used the ones I brought home yesterday in a half hour packing up her "blue things" glassware. Here we go.....................” 7:23:25 AM 3/27/07 “Good Morning. Its current 61 degrees with 83% humidity in Wilmington, NC. Today's forecast high is 80 degrees. Tomorrows is 81.” 7:29:17 AM 3/27/07 “Good morning! Yesterday was magnificient! 80F and sunny...I return to work today although I am going in late...I got really tired towards the end of the day...slept from 8pm until almost 7 this morning...either the beautiful day, all the work I had to do after my week long absence from home, or Sunday's lack of sleep finally caught up with me...feel much better today...here is a picture from my morning on Jacksonville beach: 7:47:28 AM 3/27/07 “Cloudy. Rain at times this morning...then a chance of rain or snow showers in the afternoon. Highs in the 40s. Wife and 20 y/o arguing at 0300 about his inconsiderate behavior cooking at that time. Ugh. More coffee needed.” 7:55:42 AM 3/27/07 “Morning. Nice day here. Cooler, but its still sunny out. Worked in the garden for a while yesterday, and went for a walk. Just too lovely to be inside. Today's my last day here. THANK GOD! I had a dream last night that I called in sick. THen the alarm went off. I've been up basically since 2:30, again with the hunger. I'm suprised I haven't gained much weight yet. My fellow teachers just came in with a gift for me - a gift certificate to come to the Tiger's game with them. How fun! Too bad I'll be surrounded by beer...... :) Have a great day, everyone!” 8:06:22 AM 3/27/07 “eh” 8:53:58 AM 3/27/07 “That good, huh SC? The pollen count is just about off the charts here, so the windows are staying shut today. I washed my car yesterday, and it was yellow within half an hour. Argh. Laurel's sneezing her poor little head off. If it gets any worse, she's trying some non drowsy allergy medicine.” 8:55:50 AM 3/27/07 “Mornin' My heat pumps are coming today! One set for upstairs and one for downstairs. Sure be nice to get my whole house heating and air conditioning back after a year and half without.” 9:03:54 AM 3/27/07 “Ick. When my dad built his house in Florida he didn't install an AC system at first. That was a miserable existence for a few years.” 9:08:37 AM 3/27/07 “I've been using window units, HPM, so it's been good. :-)” 9:11:42 AM 3/27/07 “Ah, ok.” 9:15:44 AM 3/27/07 “Even a native like me can't handle a Mississippi Summer without AC. I'm excited to get my new units today. You can mail order anything from the internet. They are being shipped from FL.” 9:20:38 AM 3/27/07 “I don't know how our forefathers put up with it.” 9:24:06 AM 3/27/07 “Hi again. I spoke too soon. A bunch of the old girls came into the Resource Café and their noise flooded the place. So I filled my coffee cup and went outside on the veranda. There I sat and enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels. Several people walked passed and extended greetings. One was a woman with whom I enjoy having a few words. When I first met her, she was wearing a beautiful t-shirt with my name on it, my middle name. It turned out to be a town in Northern Ohio, "Elmore." She was alone, as usual. I don't know if her husband is working or old and ill. It made me think that some of the TV Programs may be close to reality. People can get enamored with each other and decide to facilitate things by getting rid of one or both spouses. Life can have lots of differend twists to it. Enjoy the rest of your day.” 9:26:40 AM 3/27/07 “Why am I thinking of Arsenic and Old Lace all-of-a-sudden? (don't mess with Raymond Massey)” 9:35:24 AM 3/27/07 “Hey, hey...good morning all you early risers...oh, I am the only one who falls in that catagory, aren't I? :D Anyway, it's 42F here with rain on and off predicted for the next few days...we could really use some rain... Here's today's picture from my Jacksonville beach morning...enjoy: 5:07:05 AM 3/28/07 “Double post! the weirdness is starting already. last edited: 3/28/07 5:57:40 AM” 5:55:48 AM 3/28/07 “Another 30 minutes 'til sun-up! (a side-benefit of daylight 'savings' time....) It's Wednesday, Folks! You're halfway there.” 5:56:01 AM 3/28/07 “Good morning! The Canadians lost their cold air again. It got chilly last night, and it's raining. The pansies I planted yesterday are probably loving it. I would prefer to be able to go out back again and pull perenial stubble from last year. But NOOOOOOOOO, we need more rain so now the yard is underwater again. Ah well, I guess I can do something else today. Thinking about heading back to school again. Maybe Nursing. I think I could do the job w/out slapping anyone silly. And it's secure. Think maybe I'll call and make an appointment w/ a counselor at the community college today. No time like the present!” 6:42:34 AM 3/28/07 “I think slapping people silly may be part of the job description ---” 6:53:48 AM 3/28/07 “Hey Mata, some of us in the West! 0500 seems early enough for me. Tilt, you know better. Slapping people silly isn't part of a nurses job description. Sass, nursing has gotten a lot of attention because of a labor shortage. You might be able to find good financial assistance. Big shortage of Medical Laboratory Professionals too. They don't get quite the recognition and income of a nurse, but they don't do bedpans either.” 7:21:23 AM 3/28/07 “Sass check if there are local hospitals willing to underwrite your education in return for a contract for "X" number of years. If you really want to be gutsy look for the small towns needing medical staff. I have a friend who went through PA (Physician Assistant) school on the dime of some small towns out west. Oh no really GETTING UP if you technically never went to sleep last night.” 7:27:40 AM 3/28/07 “Sass - I have a friend who is in her first semester right now doing this. She's our age, and been cutting hair for about 10 years. It's a family business. The dad had owned the place forever. Her husband and brother in law bought it. Her brother in law is a pain and she just couldn't take it anymore. She had to get out and we have a new CC in our town. So far, she loves going back to school. She is in a situation where childcare isn't an issue for her though, so that helps. I think most classes are at night. The downside is that she doesn't see her husband in the evenings but she works with him all day so that isn't a problem either. I'll ask her how long it's actually going to take and all of that stuff.” 7:35:24 AM 3/28/07 “It takes about two years full time Dayhiker. I've actually already done a bunch of research. You all are correct, there are scholarships from the state and hospitals right now. There is also a two year wait for nursing schools in Michigan. BUT, I have many classes to take prior to getting to the part where I'm accepted to a nursing school. I got an academic scholarship out of high school but aside from one English, one gym, one psych and a whole lot of art courses I took nothing, before giving it all up to play euker (oh to be able to do that over again). So, I'll get the ball rolling and follow it where it goes. Thanks for the encouragement everyone.” 7:44:06 AM 3/28/07 “I can see you as a labor and delivery nurse. Those ladies are generally tough and firm, yet caring and encouraging at the same time. Also, nurse anethecist (sp) pull in some major G.” 8:01:04 AM 3/28/07 Hugs. “Good morning. Wow! All this talk about work has me worn out. Think I'll go back to bed for a while. I already had my morning coffee at the Resource Café. Have a wonderful day.” 8:17:16 AM 3/28/07 “Good Morning Yall! Work is right...I have a tongue lashing for all yall who procrastinate and wait till the last minute to have your taxes done!!! I have a new appreciation for accountants!!!! This is insane!! Just go ahead and get an extention now! Sorry for the rant. Have a wonderful day...!! CHEERS!” 8:34:18 AM 3/28/07 “Good Nurses are always needed. Good going, Sass.” 8:58:44 AM 3/28/07 “There's a big demand for nurses in my area. The local hospitals started recruiting them from other countries because of the shortage. I read that there's also a shortage of people to teach nursing.” 10:37:50 AM 3/28/07 “Yes. Our governer just offered a grant to inrease instructors in the state. Just sent in my request for my transcripts and applied to the school. Step one and two done!” 10:47:55 AM 3/28/07 Jump to Page << prev
