It really surprised me when I heard that crunch sound. Abby wasn't in the car and really, it's not that big of a deal. It's just a lot of money and a bunch of haggling with insurance people now. In the grand scheme of things it's not a major loss. Thanks for your sympathy and concern though. =) I am a bit gun shy now though. Driving much more cautiously in the past few days. So, Nowslimmer I think your package should be getting to the Post Office today! The last of the cookies are cooling as I type. Treebait, Spalpeen might be onto something. Coyotes make some realy weird noises. Not like you'd expect. You all have a wonderful day. I am going to do my best to, despite the fact that we have no snow and it's due to rain for two days. I get to help the kindergarteners with their balance today and that's almost as good as snow.” 9:00:31 AM 12/12/06 “Sass is right about coyotes but I had another cuprit making bizarre noises in the woods around our house...neither Bill or I could identify it for weeks...then one day I heard the noise again and there, on the corner of our driveway, was a grey fox making the noise which was a cross between a yip, a scream and a howl...very weird... last edited: 12/12/06 9:07:30 AM” 9:06:34 AM 12/12/06 “mid 50's and around 70 today. It should be that way for the next 7 days or so. Busy here at work. I've been on the road too much which makes me come in early to still get done what I need to get done. The plus side is when I get back from meetings I just go straight home. I got home at 4 yesterday and got to spend lots of time playing with the kids. That was fun.” 5:25:54 AM 12/13/06 “I haven't checked the temp, but the predicted high is in the 30's. The rain took our snow yesterday and I'm okay with that because we will get our share. Winter's not really started. Still painting out the duplex; first thing that I've found following surgery that gives me problems. Just have to take it slow.” 6:39:09 AM 12/13/06 “Looks like the rest of the week will see temps in the 40's...weird....have a good day...” 7:20:34 AM 12/13/06 “It's 36 here this morn. Clear and sunny today. Lone Star Hiking Trail CLub has a 'jinglebell' hike this Sat. in the forest. Then a party at the rec. area....ho, ho, ho.........” 7:25:15 AM 12/13/06 “The weird noises are young racoons in heat howling inside one of my father-in-law's sailboats, parked a few lots down from mine. I was ready to go kill them myself last night, because they kept setting off my next door neighbor's effing dogs all night. Today is my mom's birthday; I'm taking her to meet / get an autographed copy of Paula Deans' newest cookbook. God help me.” 8:02:40 AM 12/13/06 “tb - I thought you did all of her cooking? So really, you're buying yourself a cookbook that you will soon leave behind.” 8:07:59 AM 12/13/06 “Oh my. God help you! I jest cain't stand that Pauuula Deeeen. Well, it's a day. The insurance schit is already old.” 8:08:08 AM 12/13/06 “Hey, I like Paula Dean! SHe's a sweet lady! Laurel and I met her in a gas station of all places when Laurel was 2. I just don't like shopping crowds.” 8:10:11 AM 12/13/06 “SHUT UP, you get to meet Paula Deen, treebait? That's so cool! I like her, although that wretched "Party" show she has now is the most annoying thing I've ever seen. She still seems super-duper nice though, I love her regular cooking show. Tell her Lyra says hi! LOL.” 8:55:24 AM 12/13/06 “It was more like I was stanhding in line in front of her with Laurel looking at her over my shoulder, and she commented on Laurel's hair, which is blonde and super curly. We chatted very briefly and that was that.” 9:25:04 AM 12/13/06 “Arrgh! nope didn't help” 10:18:11 AM 12/13/06 “I'm sorry Treebait, she may be nice but she's annoying as hell. When I want to get Birch's nerves jangling in a jiffy I talk like Paula.” 12:51:21 PM 12/13/06 “Well, seeing Paula was a wash. They were sold out of the books she was going to sign (only books purchased at that store could be signed) and the line was already about 100 yards long when we got there, 2 hours early. So we had a nice coffee and people watched for an hour. I saw 2 of my art profs from college heading for the back of line, with their ready-to-sign cookbooks in tow. Man, seeing Mr. Ladnier getting in line to see Paula was damned funny. He was so aloof, "cool" about getting into trendy stuff back then. And here he is now!” 3:10:15 PM 12/13/06 “Good tidings from Lower Alabama..... ...I went to wash my car today and realized that our outside faucet froze and busted the other night....I never dreamed the water would freeze this far south....you know what they say...if ya don't like the weather in Alabama...just wait awhile...it will change....we were wearing wool socks and long undies a few days ago and now today it is in the 70's...sheesh..... ....yes...I am at the library again...I think I will look into a lap top after Christmas...my computer is almost a dead dinosaur..... ...HUGS to all!!!” 3:10:20 PM 12/13/06 Hugs. “Good morning. Rain has been falling in Melbourne, Florida. It woke me up about 4 AM. So I'm about ready to leave for the health club. It opens in about 20 minutes at 5:30. Then at 8 I'll hit the Resource CafĂ© for my morning free coffee and pastry. They now have a second computer available there for our use. divinity - You know you're welcome to sit on my lap top anytime. Have a great day everyone. last edited: 12/14/06 4:18:05 AM” 4:16:24 AM 12/14/06 “Good morning all. 30 degrees and still almost 2 hours til daylight. The ceiling painting went a little better yesterday; evidently I'm toughening up to it:) Another couple of days and I can clean the place and shampoo the carpet...then I get to start organizing and cleaning this place. The logger comes today to start select cutting the poplar and jack pine. My brother Mike is very upset; he doesn't believe any tree should ever be cut. My cat is still in hiding: day 7. Have a great day everyone.” 5:30:11 AM 12/14/06 “Dang that's a long time for a cat to hide, lol. Jack Pine?! You'll get Kirkland's warblers. So yesterday I had someone call and offer me $20(!) for a dozen french cookies. I didn't think that was fair so agreed to $7/ dozen. This could be the start of something wonderful. I have two orders for 5 dozen total. I am now out of french cookies. I'll make more today and wrap gifts. Better to do it while the kid's at school. Never know when she'll pop out of bed and around the corner. Two weeks w/o a car started yesterday. I'd really like to drive our VW camper around. Someone is opposed due to the corrosive elements in the area this time of year(road salt). Havea good day everyone.” 7:15:41 AM 12/14/06 “Does he know what a corrosive element a disgruntled spouse can be?” 7:50:42 AM 12/14/06 “Nimblefoot...LOL...poor Sass...by the way, what's a French cookie? I've been up for awhile but busy elsewhere...it's 34F here and raining...we really need rain...I heard we were 12 inches below our normal moisture levels...” 8:01:29 AM 12/14/06 “Yeah Sass, what's a french cookie? Post the recipe too! Laurel kept me up until midnight, and then the stupid jack---'s with their loud car stereo and hip hop music going until 2 am finished the job. 4 calls to the police later, another neighbor came out and threatened to smash out their car windows if they didn't shut it off immediately. I cannot wait to get the f--- out of this neighborhood. All of the development going on around here is forcing the trash in this direction.” 9:41:41 AM 12/14/06 ““Poor little Laurel must still be scared. laurel is someone else's child abby is sass's sweet little angel” crash bang 8:50:47 AM Laurel/Abby, both are too cute for words, and Sass knew what I meanth, Net Nanny. ;-)” 9:50:59 AM 12/14/06 Ha. “treebait - You don't like good music? LOL.” 9:51:08 AM 12/14/06 “A real french cookie gives you a little tongue action when you take a nibble(foot).” 9:56:11 AM 12/14/06 “Good morn. I wanna get a camper, Sass. What year do you have and do you like it?” 10:00:48 AM 12/14/06 “Hey Dude, the subtopic is now tongue action:)...unless that's what the van's for.” 10:02:24 AM 12/14/06 “Rosey, we have a 1984 Westphalia. It's really fun. It has a fridge and stove, closets cupboards and shelves, two double beds, seating for four and it gets about 17mpg. It's slow to get going, even though it has a porsche engine (the thing weighs in at around 3500#), and tops out at about 70mph, but gets us where we are headed. We've looked at the newer ones and they are pretty darn nice. Much lighter weight but don't have the fridge and stove anymore. We also have a custom kayak rack for ours and can put the bikes on the back. It's a perfect adventure race vehicle. I think there is an album of VW pictures in our webshots. French cookies are Belgi Galettes. They came about centuries ago when folks started frying dough on rocks. Now, we use an electric galette iron (Palmer Galette iron model #1110, $49.99 online). They are also known as 12th night cakes and were made in honor of the three kings coming. They are pretty rare in these parts but in SE Kansas, where my family comes from, they're very common. I guess the immigrants that came to work the coal mines there brought cast iron cookie irons (that they held over their stove), from their countries of origin. The town my Gramma lives in used to have a forge who manufactured them. Apparently they had to stop because the workers lifted so many of the irons for family members. The recipes all vary but mainly consist of butter and brown sugar. The recipe is useless without an iron. I guess you can use a pizzelle iron for the dough too, but I've never tried it.” 11:32:57 AM 12/14/06 Bad News “I subbed today, back at the school I worked at earlier this year. A high school student was killed this morning in a car wreck on his way to school. Most of the busses (full of kids) drove past the accident. It was a very weird, sad day today. The kid was a cousin of one of the teachers, and he was living with her parents. Needless to say she was a wreck this morning, and left school. We are still working out Christmas plans with our family. I hate the holidays. No matter what happens, it all sucks. No one ends up happy.” 8:21:28 PM 12/14/06 “SG, that's when you and your hubby go on a little camping trip together- or just find a nice little b and b, or something, for Christmas. Sometimes it's good to get away from the family! Make some "You" time!” 8:23:52 PM 12/14/06 “Treebait, we said last year that's what we were going to do! I just want to go to church with my family this year. At this point, the rest of it I don't care about.” 8:42:19 PM 12/14/06 get up! “Hugs. Good morning. It must be Saturday, You're all sleeping so late. I've already played about 20-games of "FreeCell." Guess I better wrap the cup for nimblefoot and get it in the mail. My car's electrical problem may be turning "hard." It needed a jump start the last two mornings, so I expect to have to do it again today. But it has not blown a fuse for about two weeks now. The mechanic wants a "hard fault" before he searchs for the problem. I have an extra battery on the floor of the front seat.I finally realize that I don't have to haul the battery in and out of the car. The jumper cables can reach from there to the battery under the hood. Have a great weekend.” 6:19:06 AM 12/15/06 “I could have used that extra battery yesterday...when I use my remote car-started it disconnects the chime which reminds me that the lights are on...had to get a jump to get home and used that as an excuse to do a drive-around the Interstate Park next door and check out the herds of deer... Ah, Sass, GALLETTES! I know those...yummy and pretty... Clouds prevented seeing the meteor shower and the northern lights last night...bummer... Nope, nowslimmer...not Saturday, more's the pity but at least it's FRIDAY! Let's hope it's a good one for you all...” 6:30:20 AM 12/15/06 “Morning! Either tonight or tomorrow night I should get out camping. I'm not so much of a snow buff (despite the new snowshoes ;-)) so am liking this weather. Reminds me of spring!!! There may even be frost going out; who knows??! (course, then that will screw up crops or tree colors or something, I suppose!)” 6:51:12 AM 12/15/06 “Good morning, Sunshine (the earth says hello?). I slept in all the way to 7:00 this morning and feel great. I should wrap up the painting today and start the cleaning tomorrow. It will be good to start getting settled in my new digs and have the time to take long walks every day. Got to remember to take something out of the freezer for dinner tonight. Last nights hotdog wasn't my favorite evening meal. NS and MH, hope you 2 oldtimers can keep your batteries charged, lol.” 7:08:17 AM 12/15/06 “hotdogs?? That ain't no way to keep the batteries charged...........get ya a big ol bowl of chittlins........mmmmm...yummy..... :p” 7:13:36 AM 12/15/06 “Good morning! Frozen shrimp are my favorite last minute dinner. All you have to do is run them under cold water to thaw quick. Not much to them though they do taste yummy. Helping the kindergartners make gingerbread houses today. They use two taped together school-lunch milk cartons and graham crackers to build it, then decorate with old Halloween candy, new Christmas candy, icing and oh my, what a mess! Poor custodian. Work party tonight at a piano bar. I don't want to go. I guess it's an important thing to do so I'm going. Piano bar...thirty miles from home....no fun. And I have to get dressed up. Okay, I'm done being whiny for the day. HAPPY FRIDAY!! Have a great weekend everyone.” 7:52:48 AM 12/15/06 “You're playing at a piano bar? How cool.” 8:03:27 AM 12/15/06 “get up? seems like I never even went to bed.” 8:05:57 AM 12/15/06 “uppper 60's/low 70's for another week. We had the town Christmas parade last night. It was maybe 55 or so and actually felt chilly. We don't really do Christmas parties at my office. It's just another obligation at night in an already busy time. Next week we're all going to lunch on the company to the local catfish/seafood place. After Christmas we'll probably get together again at a Japanese steakhouse or something. One year we all went to Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL. We'll be lowkey this year because I'm hoping to put together a retreat in April and raft the Chattooga in SC. We'll see how the numbers come out. SG - it doesn't get any easier. My folks and inlaws live in the same town. Both sets are very accomadating and reasonable on the holiday planning and coordination, but it's still a pain and there are occaisonally hurt feelings. I can't imagine throwing in a group that doesn't want to be accomadating or the cases with multiple divorce/remarriage where you have 3-8 groups of folks to visit. When my oldest was born we started a new policy. We stay at our home for all of Christmas. It's for the kids. THe next week we spend the entire holiday in the town where we grew up. They give up having the kids and grandkids on Christmas Day, but in return we go and visit 4 days. We stay 2 nights at each place and therefore don't violate the 3 day rule.” 8:20:53 AM 12/15/06 “We spend Christmas morning at our house, Christams Eve at my folks, Christmas Day w/ Joe's. The folks in Texas moved away so they get nothing. Some years a visit for the week after Christmas. You just can't please everyone.” 8:43:23 AM 12/15/06 “Ugh, my mom lives 3 miles away and she's worried about "not being invited" to HPM's mom's house Christmas day. She's got MAJOR low self esteem and insecurity issues, and they're getting worse as she gets older.” 9:09:23 AM 12/15/06 “I solved my problems with Christmas visits - I go backpacking - foof them all” 9:13:32 AM 12/15/06 “"Foof them all" I like that! Sounds like a plan to me!” 9:15:32 AM 12/15/06 “Yeah, let 'em eat cake and have a foof for all.” 9:16:12 AM 12/15/06 “Good Morning. Birch's last union meeting today, full docket at work for me (hooray), and not much doing afterwads. It should be a nice day. Hey Mata, would you please email me your snail mail address? Have a fantabulous saturday all.” 7:11:13 AM 12/16/06 “Up since 5:00. The loggers started yesterday and are doing a good job (this isn't going to be a scorched earth operation) I may crank up the tractor today and put chains on the tires. Eventually it will snow:) Painting still not finished:( Cutting in that little gap between the ceiling and the wall is more time consuming than imagined. Today I'll dabble, doing a little of everything, I guess.” 7:43:01 AM 12/16/06 Jump to Page << prev
