Hi all!

Jeesh, I can't ever find time to get here anymore. It doesn't help we no longer have internet at home. I haven't checked my yahoo in two weeks. Hope no one is e-mailing me there!

Life is busy, we moved into the new house, and G is killing himself trying to make it the perfect home, all in one week. I don't know what's up with him. He's not sleeping, and isn't getting his school stuff done. All to replace some silly outlets! Can someone tell him that's a weekend job??? Why is he in such a funk over all of this? Can't he wait until the weekend?

Liz, I'd love to see the pictures. I'll try to check back for a link!

Hope all is well with everyone!

Good morning. It's another beautiful day in Melbourne, Florida.

I was just watching part of a program on the History Channel. It was about Ft. Douglas during the Civil War, which most of the time was a prisoner of war camp. It was located just south of the Univ. of Chicago. Don't know if it is truth or fiction. They are making it out to be worse than Andersonville in Georgia.

Matahari, We only made it to Escanaba. It was good. Had some company from Marquette come down for breakfast though. Got myself two pasties in one day. =)

We aren't even supposed to see 60° today. I wrapped up the patio lights, table and chairs yesterday. Today I think I may move the wood rack up onto the back deck. Woodstove comes Saturday (just in time).

I am trying to find a tent for 2 that has 40 square feet of tent space and weighs less than five #. Is it hopeless? So far I found a Mountainsmith Guardian that looks promising at 5#10oz and 54 sq. ft (45 in the tent), and only $99.97. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it? No reviews anywhere on the web thus far.

I thought they came in pairs. Seems like getting one would be like getting only one shoe, instead of a pair.

Eureka Timberline-2

Note: You'll have to locate it. Campmor and/or Eureka has screwed-up their on-line catalog page linking access.

Finding a tent close to those specs may not be hopeless, but is likely to be expensive. Maybe Hilleberg or Stephenson?

Hmmm! Guess I've never used them and never looked at the spelling. And I have an old dictionary.

I know the tent did not match your requirements, but it was not too far off. The tent did seem to fit in with another sugggestion and with the one you mentioned. I carried one for years and plan to do it again, as my 1-man tent is shot.

My main problem with this tent deal is Birch. The man refuses to even look at anything under 40 square feet for the tent space. He also refuses to look at anything over $300. Hmmmm....I wonder if he doesn't want a new tent? lol, I may be onto something! We'll probably end up using our ole saggy trekker tarp.

I will check out the black diamond stuff. I'm liking the Golite Hex w/ mesh insert. I know a few folks who really like their Megamids....same concept, just lighter.

Yep, I know Stove....except we prolly would ditch their stakes and carry ours, lose the stuff sack, etc. It'd be somewhere in between those weights and we split the community gear between us, evenly. So, it wouldn't be that heavy....just sort of heavy.

Nimblefoot, you were darn lucky to see that wolf! Very cool. Never have I even come close on three trips. Countless times the rangers have talked about how rare sightings are. I heard they were encountering people more this summer because they're hungrier or something. I'm jealous.

It's not luck, just pure stealth hiking. Since I've moved back to this area I've seen quite a few, including one 7-8 feet from me. I will not easily surrender my secret for wolf sightings. In this case the guy hiking ahead of me, a hunter trapper of about 50 years experience, saw nothing.

Sass, BTW, sorry I missed the Pere Marquette trip. Hope you had a great time. The week with my son was fantastic. Nimblefoot, I had issues w/ sciatica this trip (for the first time since delivering the kid). I found myself writhing around in my kayak trying to make the burning down my ITB stop so often it was ridiculous. It sucked! How do we get rid of this?!

Glad you enjoyed your son's visit. Did you guys catch anything?

Congrats on the grumman. We had a nice 17 foot grumman once. It was a warhorse of a cannoe.

Maybe next trip we'll do canoes in Slyvania or something....

I've been to Sylvania many times. If you're not up to remote camping, you can car camp and hit all the lakes in a couple of days by canoe.

Also, the trails are pretty easy if you want to hike in to the remote sites.

Interesting day yesterday, Tues our pediatrician referred us to a pediatric ENT and we got the appointment yesterday. Seeing a specialist in 2 days, kinda scary. Our newborn has this goose type sound with lots of wheezing. The ENT put a scope down her nose and she has a paralyzed vocal chord. Vocal chords stay closed and then open with every breath. Only one of hers moves out the way for air, hence the sound. This is a concern coming into cold season. Think about congestion with a restricted airway. Not a pleasant thought. Most of the time this resolves itself over time. Sometimes the chord stays frozen and you wind up with a breathy or smoky voice. Not sure I want my daughter to have a sexy voice. 8) To rule out a tumor or heart problem causing this (the nerve to the voice box starts in the head, runs down the neck, under the heart, and back to the chords) we have to get a EKG, MRI, Cat scan, and 2 Xrays. Our son already sees a cardiologist, so we'll go to the same guy. The rest of the test will be at Childrens Hospital. The next 2 weeks should be a bit scary, but the ENT said he has never had a case come up where the stuff he's trying to rule out wound up being the cause. Fortunately for us, Birmingham and UAB has one of the best medical reputations in the entire country. Our cardiologist is considered the best guy in the entire country for peds. It's still scary though.

I hope everything works out for you and the vocal chord heals in some way. That is scary having to take a newborn to an ENT doctor because of breathing issues.

The best to you Dayhiker. Problems with kids is always the scariest thing for me.

I rode my bike and went for a nice stroll yesterday. Trying to do what I can to deal with this incessant sciatica. It feels better with activity; sitting and lying seem to aggravate it (maybe I should quit lying so damn much, lol). I'll do this for a week or so and if it doesn't improve, it's off to the doctor. A cold front slithered in last night and it's in the very low 40's. Rumor has it that it could be the high for the day. Hmmm, where did I put those skis. Coffee tastes exceptionally good on days like this. Coffee and Ibuprofen, what a breakfast. Peace/out.

Dayhiker, your family is in my thoughts and prayers. It's so hard to have such a little one poked and prodded and tested. Hoping all turns out well. Aren't we fortunate to have such wonderful medical facilities?! It's a blessing.

Started painting our little barn yesterday. Today it's 40° and there's a huge thunderstorm headed our way tomorrow. I hate it when I start something and can't finish it when I want to. It took me all of the time Ab was at school yesterday to do one wall. Hopefully I can get one more done today.

Seem to have picked up a nasty cold somewhere (hmmm, rainey week on the river?). Feeling pretty lousy.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. I especially thought of you, Rich, as I visited the ENT.

It's actually in the 40's here with a high in the mid 70's. High are normally 83-84 now, so this is a welcome relief. Later this week it'll be upper 80's. For now, the humidity is low and it feels like late Oct.

good morning to TT...We're supposed to have temps in the 70's and sun sometime later this week-end...that's the good news...the bad news is I weighed myself last night and only weighed 116lbs...that just sucks so bigtime...I gotta pick up the pace here so, hold onto your heart, Prosecutor, just made myself 2 pieces of bacon, slice of Texas toast fried in the bacon grease and 2 fried eggs in butter...that and coffee with cream...unfortunately, I'm always putting eating off since it takes so long for me to consume anything and then I just forget about it entirely..this happened a lot this week at work where I had umptteen zillion things to do at once..anyway, it's now the week-end...rejoice!

Looking forward to your trip report, Preacher...from what I've heard, most of the best campsites are not shown on any map...

The fall colors are peaking here...I'm trying to decide whether to hit the river or the trail...either one would be good...how about you? any cool plans for the week-end? I know Double Cabin and thegriz have hopes of hitting the trails...you?
