I have a cat who likes to sleep curled up against my neck so some mornings I wake up in a lot of pain. There's a stretch I do that helps. Stand up straight, and imagine a chain runs through your spine, your neck and out your head. Yes it's silly looking. Now imagine it's being pulled up, and stretch yourself straight up. This usually makes something in my neck reset (aka snap loudly) and gets rid of most of the pain and stiffness.
