I believe you let him select a school that is too dclose to home. The school needs to out of weekend range. My distances for two sets of four years were 950 and 1,400 miles, one way! Tip, then you disconnect your long distance telephone service and buy them a pre-paid calling card for emergencies. Either live close to ties like parents and in-laws or out of easy weekend range. The telephone one I learned with the first of these last two experiences. It does save a lot of money, even thought here in Florida Southern Bell Telephone Company charges me extra for not having a long distance carrier! The distance deal helps to remove some distractions for the student. With my last experience, after my daughter first arrived on campus, they had one meeting for just parents. The College President pointed out that it was time to "let go."
