Rain rain rain here in North Alabama. I'm at around 1600ft so the clouds are floating through the yard.

Spent the day yesterday geocaching with my daughter. We found 6 and probably hiked around 5 miles total.

We had a blast !

Clear, sunny and 72 here today. Bleah. We need more rain. On another note, I picked up an intersting book last night. It's about landscaping in hurricane zones, and which trees and plants can tolerate high winds and rain. It has really good photography and charts in it.

treebait - Ha, you're out of the hurricane zone. I got hit by four last season, you had nothing worth bragging about. Please send the book to me. At least, the title and author. Thanks.

I may do some yard work later this year.

It's called "Florida Gardening Series Vol. 3, Stormscaping." by Pamela Crawford. Published by Color Garden Publishing. It's $29.95. We may not have gotten a direct hit by a big one, but we still had a lot of damage, Paul.

Well, OK. But they're still crushing trailers and hauling the pieces away here. And new trailers or manufactured homes have been replacing some of them.

My palm tree survived. Another tree and three large hibiscis shurbs had their leaves shreded and striped from the stems. The hibiscus were pulled half out of the ground and bent way over. They did not survive. but the weeds weathered the storm and want to expand their territory.

Thanks for the information. I'll look for the book.

What a great day in NH! It's snowing outside and we're expected to get 8-10 inches. At 6 AM, we already had 3 inches and it was 10 degrees. The dog sure loves his morning walks in the snow.

Glad to hear your daughter is doing much better, nowslimmer.

I got 6.5" of snow at my house yesterday. It was a lovely day of sitting on the couch and watching it come down. My BF has the day off today (winter break) so it was quite a bummer to have to get up and go to work while he's still sleeping. :(

I can't get up! My first real workout (other than mountain biking Sat) since the flu. I'm wiped and can barely keep my eyes open. Don't know how I drove to work.

Full moon. I'm starting to believe that it does affect people's behavior. When I say "people" I really mean children. Abby's been NUTS and rotten the past few days. Now, since the moon is waning she's mellowed out.

It sounds like it, Smiley Girl, according to Pewabic Pottery
"Perry and Caulkins settled on Pewabic, an Ojibway Indian word for earth, and the name of a mine near Perry's birthplace."

"Perry, born in the Upper Peninsula town of Hancock ..."
Here is another definition: Pewabic is a Chippewa Indian term that means "clay with a copper color" and is a tribute to the Upper Michigan Peninsula Copper Country where Perry was born

No out to breakfast Nowslimmer. Had to get ready and drop off the little one at her gramma's. You were dead on about the roads, what a mess!

I spent my Christmas money from the inlaws on two gorgeous tiles, one pewabic with a pine tree and one made in Traverse City by a fella named Tyge with a moose in the forest. Each are 6x6.

Wolfeyes went nutsy with paw print ornaments and a pine tree too.

It was fun. =) Thanks Wolfie!

Sassafras - Glad to hear that you two had a good time and a safe trip.

Smiley Girl - You are right. There is a lot of history in that area. They had over 400 copper mining companies there. I found the street using www.mapquest.com. Here's a couple of sites at which I glanced.

Houghton/Hancock

Quincy Mining Company 1862 - Civil War Michigan

A person could get a real education hanging around TT! And even the mention of places like Traverse City stirs up memories for me. While a young child, I went swimming and horseback riding there. Rode the horse right into Lake Michigan. The horse did not like it. And I shot a pistol for the first time there.

bitpusher

2/25/05

LOL, bitpusher. No, no, but don't give me ideas. It was a new gun that my father bought. He threw a bottle out into Lake Michigan and emptied the gun trying to hit the bottle as it floated in the waves. After missing, he reloaded the gun and handed it to me. I shot, we saw nothing, he said, "You missed!", and just then the bottle broke-up and the pieces sank. I had nailed it dead center. He said, "Your shot was easier as the bottle had floated in closer." I expressed my concern that a swimmer could step on the pieces. He told me not to worry, that it was not a swimming area. And, I guess, the sand would smooth the glass edges quickly.

Then, since I had only fired one shot, we set a piece of driftwood plywood in the sand. It was about one foot square. He said, "See if you can hit it." I replied, "I'm going to aim at that small knothole!" One shot hit it and half the piece of wood flew about 12 feet straight up in the air. He had seen enough of my marksmanship and put the gun away. I remember because I was disappointed by not getting to fire the rest of the bullets.

You're welcome, Sass! I had great fun in the Pewabic mess! Never have I seen that place like that but it was fun going through all the crates and boxes! LOL! At one point, thought we were supposed to not do it but hey, how else can we shop? By the way, I put those three dog print ornaments under wall shelf in bathroom. Black nails and a little double tack tape secured them just fine! The colors offset my towels...I am such a girl!! LMAO! I won't even go into what else I did today with the rest of my place...all I will say is that placing tiles called for moving around quite a bit and repotting of most plants. I'm tired and ready for a Corona.

NS - I went to college in Houghton, and am familiar with the area. I even took a "History of the Copper Country" class in college and learned all about the mining era. I think I'm headed up there this summer for a reunion, and I can't wait to get back up there. Its such a peaceful place for me!

Snow is stuck to everything here like big wads of cotton. The kids (that includes Birch and the dogs, lol) are out shovelling already. Snow days are the best, like little bonus weekend days. Temps are perfect for playing outside, 26°.

I have boo-coo homework (took me an hour ten to get home from school last night instead of 35 min) but Dad's home to keep the kidlet distracted. Think I'll pack for Indiana today too. Venison Chili will be simmering away on the stove soon. You all should drop by for lunch.
