Day 6 of my annual cold/sinus thing. I'm back at work, grudgingly. My parents lost the roof of their carport in Florida in the hurricane. Luckily, its owned by teh condo association, so they don't have to buck up for it. They've not had good luck - first the basement flooded in Michigan with all the heavy rain, and then the worries of the hurricane. HOpefully their bad luck is over.” 7:39:06 AM 8/16/04 “Hurricanes and tornados remind us not to complain about the record low temperature of 48 degrees they had in Chicago several days ago.” 7:59:05 AM 8/16/04 “Rain headed our way from the west -- it's already coming down over in Hayward/Cable area (prosecutor's Northwoods zone). Showers and storms expected most of the coming week, my last before fall classes start. Lots of prep work to do in the coming days. Highlight of Sunday's trip up to da U.P.'s Copper Country for the family reunion: fresh raspberry pie in remembrance of reino's late grandmother who was noted for them this time of year.” 8:36:34 AM 8/16/04 “What happened--did everyone's alarm not go off today? It's already after 7:00 Mountain Daylight Time and no one's posted yet!” 8:34:51 AM 8/17/04 “Shhh! You'll wake everyone up, Aero.” 8:35:53 AM 8/17/04 “I can't help it; i just got up to get the paper and stepped on the cat!” 8:41:36 AM 8/17/04 “Northwoods Wisconsin cool and damp after pretty much day-long rain Monday -- a half inch altogether. Speaking of wet stuff, whitewater canoeing on the Olympics early this afternoon on NBC.” 8:55:52 AM 8/17/04 “Here I was thinking it was cloudy and looked like rain this morning, but now I've decided it's not clouds, but smoke. Where is it coming from?” 8:57:27 AM 8/17/04 “Back from my SHT thru hike as of Sunday night. Trying hard to avoid writing a trip report...just feeling lazy and can't get into it. Got some dishes to do, minimal house cleaning, gear maintenance and then it's off to see my daughter. Very overcast here as well. Good day to veg out and drink coffee. Have a good day.” 9:03:34 AM 8/17/04 “Snake Eyes, so the trip was good eh? glad to see back safely.” 9:07:46 AM 8/17/04 “hei, hei (as the Finns say), Snake Eyes. I think I have to show my face at the office for a little bit, but want to make it back home by lunch to watch the whitewater. I couldn't stay awake to catch the sailing coverage between 11 and midnight last night like I did the night before (when it got all of about 15 minutes, though the footage was wild at times).” 9:08:15 AM 8/17/04 “Good morning. I see Snake Eyes has tripped-in! Welcome back. That trail will never be the same!” 9:28:40 AM 8/17/04 “It really was great. I learned a lot that I can take with me on my AT thru hike, which was the primary purpose of the trip. I found out that I really am a slow hiker but have no problem hiking into the evening to get the job done. I also learned that the faster you eat your food the quicker your pack gets light, lol. It was fun and I'm pleased with it. I plan on spending weekends there into the early winter (hunting season excepted) in order to gradually get used to cold weather camping and improve my condition. This is neat stuff and I'm tickled with doing a 205 mile solo on my second hiking venture.” 9:30:39 AM 8/17/04 Snake Eyes “How 'bout a report on your feet? How are they now? What did you do for them? BTW, I've been looking at the North Shore Trail between Finland and Grand Marais. Someday, maybe!” 9:40:08 AM 8/17/04 “My feet? The first thing I learned was to ignore all of Lizs "recommendations". I bought some trail runners and all the problems I previously had on my left foot were transferred to the right. No problems with the left foot this time out,but my right foot had the same problems as my left did previously, minus the blisters. Obvious solution: Wear a hiking boot on the right foot and a trail runner on the left. Obviously I'm not going to do this. I bought the book "Fixing your Feet" and am going to try some of the self help solutions therein. If that doesn't work maybe I'll try the more exotic (expensive) professional solutions. Re: The North Shore trail. I crossed it several times while on the SHT and they may have co-existed in places. Generally it was wide enough to drive a cadillac down and seemed pretty boring, but I don't think my scant involvement with it could be termed a representative sample.” 10:37:08 AM 8/17/04 “Welcome back, Snake Eyes, I forgot the email though, sorry! Meant to send you another one! morning, Aero, get any rain your way? Something went thru here last night but didn't leave us anything. Sure did blow tho. Looks to be another warm day. better close up the house while it's still cool. It's 71 outside and 73 in the house. Watering again today. should have corn in a few weeks (not bad for planting it in June!)” 11:03:26 AM 8/17/04 “Good morning. It's another great day in Florida. Snake Eyes Birch talked about taking Electrolyte Capsules. This may be something both of us need. Google appears to have a lot of sources for the caps. Maintenance of proper electrolyte levels will reduce swelling of hands and feet after many hours of exercise, and that will reduce "hot spots" and blisters on the feet.” 6:27:08 AM 8/18/04 “Sounds like sonething I may try then, too, if it reduces blisters. Laurel jumed on my back a few times while I was lying on the floor yesterday. So now I have a nice case of sciatica. Ruh-roh, something's out of line now. Stretching helps, but I'll do more yoga stretches to ease things along.” 6:47:36 AM 8/18/04 “shoot I overslept. Had to drive my kid to school. Don't you just hate when you hit the off button instead of the snooze? LOL Got a pimpel in my nose. Hurts like heII. I need my coffee and a weekend of hiking.” 7:11:54 AM 8/18/04 cleaned out the crawl spaces the other day... “...and I found 3 street signs that the previous owner of this house must've have...well stolen I guess... now what am I going to do with them? it's a crime to take streetsigns, so I don't want them :)” 7:22:06 AM 8/18/04 “A sunny morning here in the Northwoods, though the forecast says thunderstorms by noon and showers through the evening. Low tonight into the upper 30s with possibility of scattered frost in some locations. Schizo weather. The weekly test of the tornado sirens just went off, too. SE and NS, hydration and electrolytes have got to be at the top of the list for surviving long distance hikes, it seems to me. So many other issues cascade from there.” 9:24:53 AM 8/18/04 “Morning hugs to all!!!.....It's Thursday........2 more days!!!woooohoooooooo.........rain in the forecast for the weekend:( so my roomy says no camping( she has a cold too...nothing worse than a summer cold in Alabama)......I guess I'll stay home and veg and dayhike and get ready for Labor Day weekend in Ohio....decided to fly up and spend it with my daughter ( cause I won't see her until Xmas) go to some of my fav places to eat and maybe a museum or two...The Greek Festival is going on...that sounds like fun.... Y'all have a GREAT day!!!” 4:38:26 AM 8/19/04 Hugs. “Good morning, all you wonderful people. It's great to picture your smiling face out there. Enjoy youu day.” 4:47:40 AM 8/19/04 “Gorgeous morning so far in the Northwoods, though it was chilly overnight, down in the 40s. Had a frost advisory for the counties just NW of us. Only going to be in the 60s today and over the weekend. Starting to seem like autumn has come a wee bit early around here.” 8:46:39 AM 8/19/04 “6 more hours and I'm outta here. Up to the Beartooths til Sunday. Aero, if you're in the area, stop by Lily Lake. Me and Gordon will be camped out up in the meadow before the campground. We'll be in a big white wall tent.” 9:24:37 AM 8/19/04 Grrrr.... “I need COFFEE.” 9:26:46 AM 8/19/04 “I'm already done for the day at work, woo hoo! Now I get to play with DangerGirl! and clean up a little bit. Then, if I get the chance this afternoon, I'll play with my new toy. A 1750 psi pressure washer.” 9:45:28 AM 8/19/04 “Damn, treebait, I know she gets dirty, but I don't think that 1750psi is the answer...” 9:50:27 AM 8/19/04 “What fun, treebait! I bet you'll be able to knock those cats right out of the tree. And flip them over in mid-air on the way down. Or are you planning to set up a car wash business? LOL.” 10:03:37 AM 8/19/04 “good morning! 54 degrees here this AM. Clear though and supposed to be in the 80's or so. Been a bear and cub hanging around the choke cherry trees and driving the neighbor dogs crazy: barking all night. Need to borrow a gun, I think... I guess I could use the bear spray on the dogs.” 10:34:54 AM 8/19/04 “The only place I'd use a pressure washer on my car is getting that road gunk oout of the wheel wells. I have algae coated vinyl siding, so that gets washed. I also have supposedly algae resistant (big lie) wood decks, so they're getting washed too. Laurel just ate a big bowl of spaghetti-O's for lunch. Her clothes are gonna need a lot of help getting clean. I just dunked Laurel in the kitchen sink and she's clean, for the most part. Baby soap barely touches the orange tint the spaghetti-Os left all over her face, hands and legs. Glad I fed her on the tile floor in the kitchen this time.” 1:21:52 PM 8/19/04 “Good morning, all you beautiful people. Hope you're ready for a wonderful weekend.” 5:08:12 AM 8/20/04 “Morning!!! high of 94 today. I'll will be leaving for Springer Mtn. sometime in the afternoon.” 6:20:40 AM 8/20/04 “Tainy in Illinois today. Guess I will bake up a couple batches of Prosecutors Bars for my upcoming backpacking trips to Wind River Range and Yellowstone.” 6:58:13 AM 8/20/04 “Nice cool 61F in ABQ this AM. Need more coffee. Late nights, early mornings all week. zzzz........” 7:43:38 AM 8/20/04 “Yikes! I just woke up 15 minutes ago!! Bad sunshine. It's cool and sunny here in the UP. Feels like Fall.” 8:38:45 AM 8/20/04 Sunshine “It is fall. 39 degrees here at 8:38. Wonder what it was last night? Thank God for coffee!” 8:59:13 AM 8/20/04 “Good morning. Today's the day.” 6:21:46 AM 8/21/04 “Good morning everyone.” 6:47:08 AM 8/21/04 “Morning HUGS......what day Nowslimmer???...you coming to visit me???” 6:49:00 AM 8/21/04 hugs “whatever!” 7:31:35 AM 8/21/04 “Grrr.....I hate the saying whatever...........it is close to the saying........#&%!$ you.....” 7:35:05 AM 8/21/04 “In a nice way?” 7:36:37 AM 8/21/04 “Snake Eyes....welcome back to "get up"” 7:38:19 AM 8/21/04 “no one is ever up when I get up.....so it is lonely here....” 7:39:20 AM 8/21/04 “Thanks. It's 36 degrees outside and 58 in the house. Lots of coffee this a.m. Going to cut and split more firewood this morning and head to some friends 60th wedding anniversary this afternoon. Should see lots of old friends from back in the day. Hopefully the memories have faded and the bench warrants all expired (sounds sort of like an old Irish blessing doesn't it?).” 7:45:33 AM 8/21/04 “LOL..sounds fun......it is warm and rainy here......lots of thunderstorms........a good day to veg out!!!.....” 7:48:10 AM 8/21/04 divinity “What do you expect? You advertised and I responded, offering to be your alarm clock(wake up call). You never said, "Boo," or sent your telephone number. First, my old flame broke my heart, and now you, a young flame! Little wonder that I head for solitude of the woods.” 8:10:38 AM 8/21/04 “Nowslimmer, I think you have hit on something there, a great unifying theory of men and the woods.” 8:49:35 AM 8/21/04 “lmao” 9:33:17 AM 8/21/04 Jump to Page << prev
